This particular choreography of 2PM's "Again and Again" is just ahead of its time.

Sandman fans really don’t pay enough attention to the fact that time passes really differently between the Dreaming and the Waking.
Hob goes to bed five minutes late; meanwhile Dream is standing on top of the highest tower in the pouring rain for days waiting for husband to come home from work.

Hob is, undeniably, a bit gross in the 1589 scene with his ostentatious wealth and excesses, but I still find Dream ignoring him in favor of Shaxberd heartbreaking if you consider Hob wasn’t just showing off his wealth to Dream to impress him. He really saw Dream as his benefactor and had zero guidance on what he needed to do to continue to earn this being’s interest.
It’s perfectly understandable that his first assumption after 1489 was that he was given immortality in order to make something of himself and he reached the pinnacle of success that a commoner could coming from nothing (granted, over more than a common lifetime) going from printing apprentice to a knighthood with wealth enough to host the Queen in his home. Given his frame of reference and limitations (ie, not being an endless, all-knowing being or particularly educated before he became immortal) it’s perfectly understandable that he wouldn’t grasp why this success is so uninteresting, even repellant to someone like Dream.
But what really breaks my heart is wondering if Hob thinking about Dream and how to impress him is what got him through tough times in that previous century. If it’s what made him take risks and strive to educate and better himself, to become more than he was, at least within his own frame of reference and society. If after all this time he was looking forward to showing his success to the one who inspired him to achieve it. That’s what makes Dream’s dismissal of all Hob accomplished and wanted to share with him really hurt.
