A little reminder that this blog is (heavily) Everlark-centered but also Gale friendly. I love Mr. Hawthorne with all my heart. All Gale vs. Peeta wars just donāt exist in my blog space. Thank you! š„°
Just in case, lol:
- I donāt ship Peeta/Gale, that is just a āno-fandom-warā art. But if you ship them, I hope this illustration will warm your heart!
- I donāt ship Gale/Katniss also. In a romantic way. But I stan platonic!Everthorne!
- Katniss/Peeta/Gale? NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MY GOSH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- I adore aus where Peeta and Gale are friends but I canāt imagine them being friends in canon (unfortunately).
- Iām OBSESSED with GADGE. Blame @awhiskeyriver for this!
- Gale is hot! Thatās canon! š¶

My brother was just reading me the summary of Romeo and Juliet and he literally read the line āstar crossed loversā which of course made me think of Peeta and Katniss. But what really struck me was the similarities between the two stories. Like Romeo and Juliet commit suicide to be with each other and Peeta and Katniss were literally about to eat the berries together at the end of the first games. And then of course they actually fell in love after that but it just struck me as such a big parallel between the two stories.

Katniss is so funny because homegirl does not do emotions in half measures. She's so all or nothing and one of the best examples of this is Peeta's interview because his exact words are "Well, there is this one girl. I've had a crush on her ever since I can remember." but Katniss immediately goes to "Peeta has absolutely wiped the rest of us off the map with his declaration of love for me."

Can i ask you something? Why did Peeta have burning scars himself? He was supposed to stay behind with Tigris. I never understood. Iāve heard that itās implied that he burned himself because he followed katniss but is this confirmed? Thank you!!
Disclaimer: it has been a hot second and a half since I read Mockingjay, so I could be completely wrong, but I think that is what the text implies. Hereās the break down:
Katniss wants Peeta to stay with Tigris, but he says heās going out on his own, and Gale gives him a nightlock pill so he can die on his own terms.
As Katniss and Gale walk towards the mansion, Katniss keeps looking around to see if she can spot Peeta, but canāt.
She thinks of Peeta one final time as Gale is captured, fretful over the fate of the rest of her allies, but only tells us she hasnāt seen him and doesnāt know whatās become of him.
We hear whatās become of him when sheās recovering ā
Peeta's still in the burn unit. He made it to the City Circle after all.
So we do know he sustained the injuries as a result of the explosions.
This is the next we hear of him, in the meeting of victors to vote on Coinās Games ā
Through the water in the glass, I see a distorted image of one of Peeta's hands. The burn marks. We are both fire mutts now. My eyes travel up to where the flames licked across his forehead, singeing away his brows but just missing his eyes. Those same blue eyes that used to meet mine and then flit away at school. Just as they do now.
We donāt know who pulled Katniss from the fire, but I think this is a good clue that it was Peeta. At the very least, he was in the City Circle when the parachutes went off.
As Katniss burns, she describes herself as a āfire muttā and since she uses that term again here, I feel it may be an intentional connection to the incident. She also describes a small bird sinking claws into her chest and trying to stop her dying (drowning, in her mind). She identifies this bird as Prim. It has Primās characteristics and speaks with her voice. No doubt, in a metaphysical sense, it is Prim, urging her sister to fight for life. In a physical sense, Iāve often wondered if the pulling she feels might be Peeta yanking her from the flames. Katniss first notes that his hands are burnt, like he grabbed her while she was still on fire.
Itās conjecture, because he could have sustained the burns from proximity, but I think itās pretty heavily implied that he rescued her. Do they really need the Mockingjay anymore? No. But Peeta needs Katniss. (Okay, and itās the decent thing to do, but let me have this).
This also perfectly ties up a three beat of āKatniss and Peeta aflameā in the street in front of the mansion: the first two times were for the opening ceremonies of the Games, and the final time is real fire.
That kind of symbolism seems like a Suzanne move. Thanks for the question (you can always ask me things)! šš„ I know @alliswell21 had some good thoughts on this moment too!

Wait is this canon?? Can someone point this out in the book please if it is ?
not Katniss absolutely adoring the way thatĀ Peetaās eyes light up and get a spark in them when heās telling a story and his natural charisma and charm just oozes out of him. Her just thinking that sparkle is so special that she canāt help smiling whenever she sees it happenĀ

This literally made my week. This was so beautifully expressed. People not liking Peeta is their choice. However sometimes ( I'm not saying in this case) it is their own internalised misogyny ( yes misogyny because here Peeta is the more feminine character) makes them see him as weak... Then I honestly feel this response is justified.
I just have to reply to that anon who said those who think Peeta is weak think badly of Katniss and Haymitch as well. NO. I think he is weak because Katniss is ALWAYS forever picking up after him while he trails behind, and if it weren't for the Games, he'd have been a mediocre whipping boy FOREVER. He's words>actions person and I don't really like that, but that doesn't mean I'm some mindless hater. I read the same books, the beauty of it is just that I & others got something else out of them!
Wait.. hold the fuck up. HOLD THE FUCK UP.Ā
You think that Peeta is weak because, what? Because Katniss is āalways forever picking up after him while he trails behindā? Can we take a minute to talk about WHY this happens to Peeta? Can we? I think we can.Ā
First a foremost, letās remember what I said not an hour ago. If it werenāt for Peeta talking his way into an alliance with the careers and subsequently swaying them from putting all of their efforts into finding and killing Katniss,Ā she would have been their very first kill.Ā And Iām sorry, Katniss is tough and sheās skilled with her bow, but letās also remember that Katniss did not have that bow because Glimmer got to it first. Katniss was unarmed except for a small knife while the careers were on her tail. She would have never stood a chance against them if Peeta hadnāt thrown them off the trail the way he did. Is he weak for this because he used words over action? Because thatās what you just implied.Ā
Next, and I just said this not an hour ago too, after Katniss dropped that tracker jacker nest from the tree onto the careers, it was Peeta that saved her from death again. While she lie on the ground hallucinating, Cato was on his way to kill her until Peeta took Cato on himself, while also telling Katniss to get out of the area. Peeta fought Cato just so Katniss could get away and escape death and because of it, was injured gravely.
Do you consider Peeta weak simply because he was unable to run at full speed and had to hobble away from the mutts to the cornucopia because of his injured leg? The injury he got while saving Katnissās life? Is he weak because the mutt got to that same leg and tore a hole in his calf but only missed Katniss by inches?
Is there weakness in a human who puts himself at the front of the line, the riskiest and most dangerous position to be in, during his second go around in The Hunger GamesĀ ? Is it because he didnāt see the force field? Is he weak because he didnāt have Katnissās super human hearing in one ear to notice the buzzing? Or because he wasnāt aware of what to look for like Katniss was?Ā
Or maybe itās because he has to be carried by Finnick because he canāt keep up while running from the fog. I mean, how dare he be unable to keep up after having just died and, you know, also only having one good leg because.. hey, remember that one time he sustained two very serious injuries while protecting Katniss and had to have that leg cut off? Because I remember that.Ā
Or how about those damn monkey mutts? I mean, you have to be pretty damn weak to fight off dozens of them at once. God forbid one actually makes its way through and attempts to eat him alive before he can kill it. He must be the weakest human being alive for allowing such a thing. How dare him. How fucking dare him.Ā
I guess heās also weak because he was captured by the Capitol right? So I guess that means Johanna is also weak, right? Right? Is Johanna weak?
Hijacking. Youāve gotta be pretty weak to be hijacked, huh? Peeta mustāve been the biggest wimp on the planet to have survived that, fought against it, and lived with it forever since most people who are hijacked end up killing themselves.Ā
Now Iāll stop with the sarcasm, because Iām tired of trying to think of any way that someone can consider Peeta weak. Your argument that Peeta is words over action is actually what is weak here. His words are his strength not his weakness. His tenacity and compassion are not a weakness. Peeta Mellark is many things, but weak has never and will never be one of them. Have a nice night.

How have you made one of my favourite quotes even better after 10 years. This is why I love the hunger games tumblr community
one thing that I sometimes forget or overlook even is Katnissā word choice when saying, āPeeta and I grow back togetherā at the end of Mockingjay.
growing back together implies that they were really together at some point before, even if their relationship was never normal or traditional. and it makes the quote so much better IMO.

There is something bittersweet about the fact Peeta's mother is the one who says "She's a survivor" in the first book. But at the end of Mockingjay, Katniss says Peeta is what she needs to survive. The very son she didn't see worth in.

My PIN number to this day is my second grade best friends birthday. There are people I donāt talk to anymore whose families are still in my prayers. There are shirts I wear to bed from exes of 8 years ago who are married now with kids. And I havenāt found a macaroni salad recipe better than my college boyfriendās momsā. Our lives are made up of so many people and when people become parts of our lives, some parts remain long after they leave. And in the same exact way, itās comforting to know there are so many lives youāre still a part of that you have no idea about.

hello, iām not sure whatās going on or whos being so awful to you, but that maternity post was the reason i follows you. it was so beautifully put, and i agreed wholeheartedly. i introduced my best friend to THG a couple months ago and theyāre on the last stretch of mockingjay, but theyāre apprehensive because theyāve guessed that katniss ends up having children with peeta, and theyāre not sure how they feel about that ending, and my FIRST thought was that post. i immediately thought to screenshot it and send it to them when they eventually got to the epilogue. iām not on tumblr very often, and when i am, itās only for a couple minutes, but if i had known you were being harassed over such small opinions, i would have absolutely stepped to defend you, and iām sorry i wasnāt there!!! your writing is one of the loveliest things iāve ever read, and i mean that, genuinely. anyway, thatās all i really have to say, but i hope you have a lovely day and know how valued you are. :) <3
i have no words for this. um...honestly you don't know how much this helped me. i do have a lot of insecurities about myself inside and outside of fandom, but know that people do like my thoughts is very, very nice. thank you.

Hmmm yeah, so this is a random (wayyy too long) snippet from a oneshot Iāll post down the line a bit. Itās probably not gonna make a lot of sense out of context but š¤·š¼āāļøš
. It was fun to write. š„° and why would we write if weāre not having a good time. Itās also unedited so I may be creeping back in later to re-edit a lot of word choice here. š Hot mess express here.
āHow long?ā I murmur quietly, feeling somewhat obligated to break the awkward silence since Iām the one who created it. But my voice is unsure and Iāve never been very good at speaking to just about anyone and the inquiry comes out strained.
āWhat?ā His head snaps up, my voice apparently yanking him out of the deep trance his grief drowned him in.
I clear my throat, more than a little awkward. āHow long were you and your wife together?ā I ask, clearer this time.
Comprehension flickers across his face. āOh. A few years.ā He sucks in a shallow breath that closer resembles a choke, to be honest. āIt was complicated at first. For her.ā For some reason he smirks a little now. Like heās remembering the dead girl he loves. Like heās caught up in a moment with her and the rest of the word has completely disappeared from beneath his feet.
āFor her?ā I pick, not even caring in the slightest that Iām prying.
His pretty blue eyes rise up, meeting mine and almost instantly growing sad. Again. āShe wasnāt sure how she felt for a while,ā he explains simply, his voice suddenly quiet and distant. āShe needed time to let her head catch up to her heart.ā
āBut you didnāt?ā I guess, having the oddest intuition about this mysterious stranger in front of me.
A ghost of a smile haunts his face now. A smile that must have once beamed bright looks more forlorn than blissful. āNo,ā he whispers, looking past me and out into the horizon. āI didnāt. I loved her from the moment I first saw her.ā
And I know I should just quit asking questions now, as heās clearly in pain and talking about his dead love clearly isnāt helping in the least.
But Iāve never known when to leave well enough alone and before I can chicken out, the way I always seem to, I prompt, āwhen was that?ā
He chuckles and, inexplicably, I feel my chest ache. I donāt like hearing a happy sound come out so broken. āFirst day of kindergarten.ā He blinks twice, as if to hold back tears, looks at me for the briefest of seconds and then flits his eyes away. āShe sang for the entire class. Andā¦ā He sucks in a breath, his eyes falling back onto mine. Blue bleeding into gray once more. āAnd I was mesmerized.ā
āYou were a goner?ā I say lightly, intending to lift the heavy mood, even a little. Just wanting to say something to make him so much as smile.
But somehow my remark has the opposite effect and his blonde brows furrow in shock.
āWhat do you mean, a goner?ā He says, his tone abruptly serious.
My fingers fiddle with my dark braid as I peer up at him curiously. āI-It was just a word? I didnāt mean anything by it,ā I stumble out, unsure how I unintentionally offended him. To my relief though, his face smooths out after only a second.
āIām sorry,ā he says with a throaty chuckle. āIām sorry, you didnāt do anything wrong. Iām just over-sensitive andā¦ā His gaze flits once again from the sky to the trees to me to the distance again. āAnd I have no business telling you any of this. Iām sorry.ā
āNo!ā I exclaim as he turns to leave. I reach and grab his arm, to assure him somehow, to at least try to make him feel better. My touch is gentle, in my personal opinion, but he acts as if Iāve electrocuted him the moment my fingers lock around his forearm. āNo, Peeta, I wanted to hear all this. I think your story with your wife is beautiful.ā
He shoots me an incredulous look, in obvious disbelief. āYou donāt know our story,ā he refutes, a little too defensively, I feel. But I know this has got to be a touchy subject for him so I let the edge in his tone go.
āYouāre right, I donāt,ā I say agreeably, wracking my brain for the right words to give him. āBut I can see how much you love her. How much you still love her.ā At that, he looks down at his feet, as if I just called him out and now he canāt bear to even meet my eyes.
āMore than anything,ā he whispers finally.
āAnd she loved you?ā
The ghost smile reappears. āFiercely.ā
āYouāre lucky. No one has ever loved me like that.ā Thereās no self-pity, no desire for sympathy in my tone. Because I donāt feel sorry for myself, I canāt imagine having any other life. I wanted to make him feel lucky, not feel bad for me.
But the glint in Peeta Mellarkās cloudy blue eyes is as if I just stabbed him in the knee.

You know what piss me off is when someone says that katniss and peeta was forced.
Oh, it pisses me off too! Because this is such a shallow, stupid interpretation of the books.
Their romance started out as an act, as a strategy to help them win the Games. But that doesn't mean their feelings for each other were all an act, or that their relationship didn't become 100% real at some point (in Catching Fire, to be more specific). Peeta has always had feelings for Katniss, and she started developing feelings for him in the very first book. In fact, we can even argue that she started developing feelings for him before the first Games, because some things she felt and thought about him suggests she could have a crush on him. Examples? The way she's always noticed him, and the warmth she felt when he smiled at her.
But regardless she started developing feelings for him before or after the first Games, it's unquestionable her feelings for him became 100% real in Catching Fire. It's also unquestionable their relationship was 100% real at the end. When she chose to be with him, she did so only because she wanted to. NO ONE was forcing her into a relationship with him. So saying that their relationship "is forced" is stupid and doesn't make any sense.
Thanks for the ask! š

This is so beautiful. As always.
sometimes i think about how the first, really, truly the first of theirĀ āstay with me?ā //Ā āalwaysā comes when theyāre about to eat the berries and iām not okay. completely willing and able to follow the other into the dark, not just because itās aĀ āstick itā to the capitol, but they care for each other. they do. itās not quite the flourishing of complete love yet, but thereās something so strong, something that would have happened anyway, that they make this choice.Ā

Me realising that if Peeta Mellark was in big brother USA.
He would 100 percent win.
Katniss would get into top three maybe but would need Peeta to get into the finals and I don't think the jury house would vote for her.
