Final backstory for character:
My character is a 30 year old women (I made a choice to not reveal her name in the comic since I wanted to add to the detached but relatable energy she has with the audience) from New York City. They have survived a terror attack that has left them blind and with severe damage to their left arm and part of their body is marred with burns. As a result of the damage they have lost their career and ability to play the piano (they were a concert pianist). After being a child prodigy and the first soloist with the ability to play deaf she is left with no purpose in her life.
She soon comes to realise that the tendons on her arms have been partially exposed due to the extensive damage to her arm and her sensitivity to the world has increased to an inhuman level. She can feel the sound waves dance on her skin and is able to communicate with others seamlessly through her new ability. After five years of hiding herself from the public to master her new abilities she has taken to fighting crime on the streets as a vigilante hero. Manipulating particles and materials to her will to bring justices to the streets. Brining power to they people. Due to the trauma she has experienced she dislikes being touched and is driven by her intense thirst for revenge and justice for what she has lost.
……………………………………………………………………………………………
I felt that New York was a good setting for the comic since there are many back alleys and nasty corners of the city that bad people can come together. The tops of the buildings are close together for someone to leap through the rooftops in ness as art and the climate can get very cold. Cold weather and junky hideouts felt like a fitting vibe for the story and so I decided to roll with it.

Week 11 & 12 To do list:
Organising work into finished pieces, process sheets and portfolio ready A3 sheets - 1 highlighting research and how I used it, 2 Problem solving; what issues I had to overcome, methods and techniques that did or did not work, 3 Development; process shots taken from blog and formalised with descriptors to explain how I produced or made work (could be 2 or more sheets), 4 Outcomes; photographed or showcased in appropriate manner, 5 Evaluation; how the project was developed in relation to my own brief or aim and areas for further development (consideration for how the outcomes relate to audience will be considered) and how it could be developed further with more time.

Week 10 Reflection:
This week I have completed all of the last-minute research posts that I aim is to complete this week. I have looked at alleyway lighting, different cape designs, water ripple effects and various throwing knives. Although I only glanced over this briefly, I anticipate that I will find drawing these objects far easier since I have been able to analyse loosely what they mean and will represent in my illustrations. Hopefully this will make the process of developing my final piece less time-consuming, as I will already know what I’m doing before approaching the topic.

Throwing knife research:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted there to be a conflict in my comic between the hero send a villain. Since I want my character to exist in the world with no magic I had to think of an interesting way to present their ability with physical objects and the elements. Having the hero control the knife through the manipulation of particles in the atmosphere felt like a very interesting way to present their power. When drawing the throwing knife I must consider the shape of the blade, handle and the grip pads, in order to create a realistic drawing of the object. Hopefully this will help me to understand how the blade looks and works, making drawing the weapon far easier.

Water effects:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I anticipated I would include some elements of water in my work I felt it necessary to research different ripple patterns. I imagine the setting of my comic to be some dingy alleyway in a large city like New York, somewhere cold, rainy and miserable to match the characters mood in the scene. Since the heroes power is based around vibration, frequency, and soundwaves (very science-based manipulation) I need to brainstorm an interesting way to illustrate their power since they are not conventionally magical. After much thought I felt that the water was the best way to present this ability in a visual and engaging way.

Cape and hood research:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took a brief look at capes to help me visualise the different shapes and designs of hoodies and capes. For me the shape and design of the hood suggests a lot about the character concealed beneath. It is important to have the character feel mysterious and heroic and not feel like a villain or a terrorist. After looking at these reference images, I decided that the best style for my character would be something loose and billowed at the bottom that covered most of the forehead and eyes. Although intimidating a more rounded shape will appear less threatening and in your face rather than a design with sharp edges or a tight fit. Dark loose and mysterious is definitely the feel that I am going for.

Alleyway and lighting research:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For one of the panels in my final piece I will be creating an illustration of an alleyway with light shining through a think gap in the wall. In order to capture the most realistic affect I decided to look at a reference images that displayed a similar effect to the one that I envisioned. Although I don’t have the time to work on small details like individual bricks, trash that could be strewn on the floor, dumpsters and neon signs in the distance, I hope that these reference images will help me to capture the essence of an alleyway in its simplest form. Better to at least take a glance at the structure of an alleyway then go in blind and end up with nothing of note for my final piece.

Week 10 To Do List:
This week my goal is to complete a few last minute research posts that will help me with my final piece. I need to look at environments relevant to my comic and various elements of my final piece that I may need reference images for as they are slightly out of my area of expertise. I should also begin editing my google site and making it engaging and fun to look at, completing portfolio sheets and adding them to the site as I go.

Week 9 Reflection:
This week my aim was to wrap up some last minute research posts. In the end I looked at Frank Miller’s Sin City, a movie filmed to seem like a classic comic book, and Batman: The Killing Joke. Additionally I produced a character motion study through a series of drawings and a character expression study through a series of drawings, along with a Pinterest board on final piece inspiration, a post on solving theoretical problems, and the different ways to present my final outcomes. I found this week to be quite challenging as I lacked inspiration and drive to complete any work. As a result I have not completed as much as I would have expected and I’m a little behind schedule. My solution for this will be to continue with the work that I had planned next week. Although it is also possible that I may cut back some of my blog posts as it’s getting quite close to the deadline and I’m running out of time to wrap everything up.
