I think I decided against following the pens this season because 1. I was already committed to paying more attention to the NBA anyway 2. I think I’ve lost faith in the front office during the off-season (probably started…hmmm since they gave up Jared McCann lmao). But extending Jeff Carter, not resigning ERod, all the defenseman acquisitions??, and not to mention dicking around with Geno’s contract has actually made me deeply disappointed in the front office and I just had no faith in the bottom six and the goalie tandem (no offense to Jarry) going into this season so I just…wished them well but had killed 87% (get it haha) of my interest unfortunately.
I’m sad that I was right but I do still hope that they make the playoffs but Hextall def needs to be fired.

Rly enjoyed both eps and can’t wait for more! I have listened to a lot of sports podcasts lately and having a fandom-centered one is rly much appreciated
Tumblr media
GOOD WOOD is a podcast about what it's like to be a hockey fan who thinks maybe these guys should try kissing a little at center ice. Your hosts Kit, Bec, and Jes are longtime transformative fans who are fascinated by fandom communities... and by what happens when our practices collide with mainstream sports cultures. We're here to tackle the real questions: Why do we want to put Sidney Crosby in a jar and study him like a bug? What unholy force compels us to babygirlify hulking athletes with false teeth? Should men even be allowed to tweet? Join us every other week as we explore all things transformative hockey fandom, from politics to culture to our big feelings about a silly little game.
Meet your hosts in Episode 0: Well, I'm Definitely Not Going to Become a Hockey Fan. Relive the trauma of Contractgate & begin the healing journey with us in Episode 1: Clear Eyes, Hearts Open, Win Forever. Share your reactions, episode ideas, and opinions on whether or not Sid's jar should include a little twig right here.

Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stützle and Josh Norris - The Mark Stone Rookie House Primer
Tumblr media
1. Wait what?
Fair question. In 2019, Mark Stone was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Vegas Golden Knights, leaving his Ottawa home empty. At the beginning of the 2020-21 season, 21 year olds Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris and 18 year old Tim Stützle moved into Stone’s empty house. Here’s what happened after that. Or at least the parts that are important to me, personally.

I am not rly into rpf or sports as a stan fandom (though I do love a lot of individual athletes and I love the fandom even more. Y’all rock but I just can’t personally participate) so I mostly approach sports in a more analytical mindset and I will use that to kind of analyze how I feel about the Pens at this point in time. First off, i have no idea what to think about this Pens front office.
I think some of Hextall’s moves are fine I guess? I think the most optimistic interpretation of this is that at least he knows that as long as he has Sid in his team he has to keep the competitive window open and I think despite his rhetoric of wanting to bring in bigger, tougher guys the important ones he has brought in are useful and fits well within Sullivan’s system. I like the numbers he signed Geno, Kris, Rust, and Rakell (at least AAV, the terms uhhh well doesn’t rly matter because I think everyone has accepted the Pens will be bad after Sid anyway). Brock McGinn’s contract is meh. Bringing back Jeff Carter was imo a mistake but 2 years is fiiine (3 mil is an overpay because there were other better options imo). Letting McCann go was probably one of his biggest mistakes so far and it still haunts me to this day ngl.
The way Geno’s contract was handled left a very sour taste in my mouth. Not only for what Geno meant for the team sentimentally but also because I think it’s a pretty bad business decision. There’s nobody in the Pens pipeline to take his place and overpaying for someone in free agency is exactly how to close the window faster. They got it done but I get why fans are side eyeing them rn.
Now that the core is locked up, the hard part begins. How can Hextall surround them with the right talent to contend? Because the crux of the matter is that Hextall hasn’t been creative enough with his moves. The core is old and aging (athlete-wise), there’s no getting around it. His hands are tied with some of the contracts the previous regime made, but I feel like he should still be able to do more now that he has more cap space and has more control of where the direction of the team is. He needs to do a better job of evaluating players and the needs of the team better. He needs to be less cautious. Patience is a virtue yes but the team needs a serious jolt to be a serious contender. Sure 9 times out of 10 they beat the Rangers in that series but they weren’t serious contenders for the cup last season lbr. Be bolder. Put your money where your mouth is and invest in an actual analytics department. Just be less boring my god.

I’m hot and cold with Tampa usually but I rly gotta give props to their front office. With the new long term contracts they signed to their young sort of “outside” core, they are pushing to be competitive for a very long time. You don’t have to be emotionally invested to be impressed with how well run their organization is!

i’m about to say something that’s prolly gonna be ~unpopular~ but i really don’t get what y’all are dunking on wright’s quote about having a chip on his shoulder
y’all talk big shit bout wanting hockey players to have a personality — yknow what comes with personality? being outspoken and saying you believe in yourself with your full chest. what was he supposed to say? ‘oh i’m sorry it’s on me i fell in the draft they’re right i Suck and deserve to go lower’
watch literally Any of the other pro team sports and this is how guys talk, bc basketball, baseball, football, & soccer? they don’t expect perfect fealty to their management overlords for the sake of a fake image of team solidarity, which ftr we know isn’t true bc how many of these teams have stood behind literal abusers but not stood up for their own players of color?
like sorry to once again talk about systems & structures of power but respectability politics & the demand to be ‘proper’ and ‘polite’ and ‘earn your respect’ — that stuff feeds into the culture of why the nhl has basically no actual players’ association, faulty medical rights, & minimal mobility for diversity and inclusion. demanding players to all fit into one mold of ‘the right way to talk’ is at best making the most boring sports personalities in the world and at worst making more disposable bodies for the nhl to churn out, bc a player that doesn’t question what the system is doing to them is a player than can be gotten rid of when they’re no longer valuable
