If you could go back in time to relive any moment in your life, what would it be?

If I could go back to relive a time in my life, it would be the winter break of 2019 right before COVID hit. I had a lot of fun during those three weeks spending time with my friends and family and I just miss being able to see people and travel in general. I went back to the place that I worked at over summer (Meet Fresh) for a bit because I enjoyed working with the people there, and one of my closest friends also worked there so we were basically getting paid to hang out (and getting free desserts is a plus HAHA). For Christmas, I went to Vegas for the first time with my family and we watched three shows, which were the "O" and KÀ by Cirque du Soleil and David Copperfield. We were also able to eat at a few buffets and just explore Vegas. We used to go on more short day trips together when I was in middle school, but as I got to high school and college, I had less opportunity to travel with my family and it was nice just being able to go to places with them. On our way back from Vegas, we were actually stuck somewhere south of Bakersfield for a day. It snowed a bit in socal and Highway 5 was closed, so this is the one time during the winter break I wouldn't want to relive LOL.

My mom’s side of the family has always called me “ah-ting.” “Ting” is the pinyin for the last character of the near Chinese translation of “Christine.”

Teleportation!! It’d be real helpful b/c I always tend to leave for my commitments at the last possible minute.

What is something you would say to your past self?

I used to care so much about how others perceived me but going through college and experiencing all the personal growth in the last few years has really pushed me out of that mindset. I think it would have been nice for the past me, and for anyone reading this (aka you) to know that, it really just don’t matter. Staying true to yourself and being able to be happy about your personal decisions, goals, and opinions is such a big part of living a good life. Some people can be so judgy and it really is a big feels bad at times, but at the end of the day your life is yours to live and not anyone else’s. If I had known how much more important it is to just focus on yourself, I think I would’ve done a lot of things differently. Being constantly worried about how you look in someone else’s eyes can really hold you back and especially in college, you really ain’t living it up if you constantly thinking about that. Assuming you’re a good person, do what you wanna do, say what you want to say, go where you want to go, cut out them negative folks, and life won’t look so bad. (:

Proudest moment has probably got to be getting back college acceptance letters & rejections LOL. Even though it was stressful, I feel as though I can look back and see that a lot of the work I did in high school paid off.

Weird but I feel as though my pessimistic outlook makes me a reflective person, I can take criticism and often use it to better myself and improve.

One thing on my bucket list is definitely to travel! I really want to travel around the world and experience different cultures.

Describe one of your dreams (in terms of what you want to do, see, go, etc).

Reflecting back on my current experiences in life and my many pieces of advice with mentors, friends, and peers. I think that something that I would definitely say to myself in the past is to be vulnerable. A couple of years ago, a mentor of mine was a vulnerable person, he opened up a lot to friends, strangers, students, etc. He’s always expressed that showing vulnerability is a strength, and it takes courage to do so. Showing your emotional vulnerability often leads to many friendships and connections, and that has been applicable to me. I feel as though I formed many friendships and connections throughout my life being vulnerable and opening up. Looking back at it now, and this advice has been extremely helpful, I wish that I knew or even did this way earlier. I could’ve formed so many more friendships and connections by opening up, expressing emotions, and in general being more open! That is somewhat of a regret of mine, but since then I’ve felt as though I have been more open, expressive, and more outreaching towards strangers, friends, peers, and mentors.

I would tell my past self that things do get better but I have to be patient. Change takes time. There are many things in my life that will change or need to change but they won’t do so immediately. I know that certain things in my life were tough, so I would tell myself to keep working because there will be lots of positive change. It will be a change that I wish happened sooner rather than later but it finally happened. I would also tell myself to be strong because lots of moments will tear me down for a bit. My life is not an easy one to live but I should be grateful for what it has taught me. I would also tell myself about how happy I am now and how much it took to get here. Knowing that would have helped me to stay focused on what mattered then and ultimately matter now. I would have told myself that my relationship with my mom gets better and better. I would tell myself that so that maybe I wouldn’t be so hard on her at times. I would encourage myself to play a sport instead of killing myself with working 7 days a week in high school. Working isn’t bad, the amount of hours I worked was toxic to my mental health.

If you could go back in time to relive any moment in your life, what would it be?

If I could have the knowledge I have now, I would go back to the beginning of my freshman year at UC Davis. In the beginning, I was very lost and overwhelmed by a lot of things and was adjusting to college. I was a lot shyer back then and did not put as much effort into making friends at the beginning of the quarter and did not know how to study for my classes. I would have tried to be more proactive when studying instead of cramming the night before. Also, I would start taking the classes for my minors a lot sooner so that I would not have to take both summer sessions in 2021 oof. I did not decide my double minor until the pandemic, so starting the classes sooner would help my upcoming course load.

Overall, I think I would appreciate the in-person experiences I had as a freshman and sophomore a lot more because the pandemic changed how I study, interact with others, and live life. There were a lot of times where I was lazy and would not go out with people but looking back, I would probably go out since we cannot really do that right now. For example, I would go to more concerts that my friends tried to get me to go to, but I did not go because I did not want to spend money, or I did not listen to the artist that much. I would try to “experience” life more and say yes to more spontaneous adventures. I would appreciate the convenience of the dining commons more even though it sometimes got tiring. I would also appreciate the Aggie Cash and the 10% discount that came with it, as well as the AC in the dorms because my current apartment has terrible AC that does not work rip. It was also nice to have all my friends just a few minutes away instead of having to drive to their apartment across town or now in the pandemic having to facetime/zoom them. Despite the small regrets I have, I think freshman year was a very exciting, transformative time and something I would like to relive.

If you could go back in time to relive any moment in your life, what would it be?

I would like to go back in time to the family vacation I went on to the Grand Canyon. It was by far my favorite family trip where we were hiking all day and going on different adventures. It was a very spontaneous trip, so we just went with the flow and did things as we saw them. I was able to go mule riding on both the North and South Rim, which was an amazing experience. To learn more about mules and ride them while viewing the canyon was amazing. We also went white water rafting in the Colorado River, which was exhilarating. I was even able to meet a man who owned a Timber husky which was a Timber wolf mixed with Siberian husky and this dog was HUGE. The entire trip was full of surprises and funny events. One event is that there was no service and my dad decided to hike THE hardest trail assuming we hiked it to find us. He got lost and was out there for a while so he got sun poisoning and got sick later that night. Another being my brother slipping in the mud and basically doing a split and me peeing my pants from laughing so hard at him. Fun times. Anyway, I would love to relive that entire trip because I love being outdoors, hiking, and experiencing new things. The whole trip was packed with great memories and I was able to spend quality time with my family.

Well for someone who has a 4 letter name, my nicknames have been longer than my actual name, but my favorite has to be “Varsity Abel” back in high school my friends gave me nicknames as like unlocked characters from games, so like “Fast Abel”, or “Science Abel”, or even “Clueless Abel.”

 I would love to have the ability to fly or super speed.

Describe one of your dreams (in terms of what you want to do, see, go, etc).

My biggest dream in life is, oh I think this one is going to take a while and be super long, my biggest dream in life is to give the generations coming after me a head start, financially, that is. I have dedicated my entire life to saving money and finding ways for my money to grow without myself putting in much effort, since I was at least 12-14 years old. At a young age I decided to put the weight of the world on my back since I realized those with money had power, by power I mean being able to make money with the money they already had. The coronavirus pandemic is playing a huge role in my master plan I have been putting in money into stocks that crashed because of the pandemic which I am willing to bet my life on that they will recover, through this I was able to get into huge positions in Airline stocks as well as mortgage stocks which I expect to grow 4 times as much since some have not fully recovered yet especially because we are still in the pandemic, it doesn’t hurt to note that my principle will pay itself off within the next 2 years off of dividends. It was a long and stressful day when I ultimately made the decision that I would never be able to touch or even see my net worth on paper in real life, all I can do is keep on adding into my portfolio, and my other methods of growing my wealth. So at this young age I concluded that not getting to live out my dreams, creating memories, and not being able to buy my wants would be the ultimate sacrifice for my future generations, a small price to pay for long lasting gain. It is nice having a bucket list to dream about and know that my kids or their kids and even their kid’s kids will get to live it out though. This goal is very important to me because by creating generational wealth I can die knowing that I have created a strong base for my predecessors to continue to build from and that they will get to live out their dreams and desires for me. With great power comes great responsibility- Uncle Ben.

Describe one of your dreams (in terms of what you want to do, see, go, etc).

One of my dreams is to become a veterinarian. I’ve loved animals since I was very young and developed a soft spot for anything that is furry (no not that way). I realized that my dream career was to be a vet in the tenth grade but I knew it was going to be a challenge. In my sophomore year of high school, my dog became very ill and I hated seeing her like that. It was so painful for me because I’ve had her since I was in the second grade and she’s family. She already had an issue of her being overweight because she was spayed at around 6 months old and she had struggled with her weight ever since. I’m not entirely sure if it was because of her weight that made her so sick, but after that it became a nightmare. My dog had to get her golf ball sized cyst removed from her stomach where her spay suture was since it was turning purple and it was clearly hurting her. After that, things were fine until we discovered that she had very elevated calcium levels in her blood. The hypercalcemia caused her to develop bladder and stomach stones which caused her to have difficulty peeing and eating; we had to remove that like 2-3 times because no one could find out what the cause was. Then, our vets took a risk and opened up her throat to see some little deformities in her parathyroid glands and she had to get one of the glands removed. But then she became paralyzed in half of her face so she had difficulty balancing and her head kept leaning towards the ground. And yes, my family fixed that all on our own :D; even my vet was really surprised. Then after that she developed a benign form of skin cancer. My point is, I want to help dogs that were like my dog so that the families do not have to go through what my family did. That was a lot sorry.

Describe one of your dreams (in terms of what you want to do, see, go, etc).

One of my dreams is to travel the world with my family.  Some of the places I would like to go to with my family are Hawaii (again), South Korea, Europe, Japan, Canada, and Australia.  I would like to travel to Hawaii again because of the beautiful beaches as well as the consistent warm weather.  It never gets below 80 degrees, which is my preferred temperature.  I do not particularly like the cold weather.  However, I only like it, because I can show off my fashion.  Hawaii is just a breathtaking place, where people can literally walk to steps and be at the beach.  I am a major beach person as is my family, andI love the crystal clear, blue water, which is very different from the murky, cold waters of Santa Monica.  When I retire, Hawaii would be the first place I am settling down in.  No questions.  I would also like to travel to South Korea.  It is ironic how I am Korean but never actually visited South Korea.  I love Korean food, so I would want to try every food stand in the outdoor markets and AYCE Korean BBQ places.  I also want to try the more traditional style of Korean food and to explore the culture as well.  There are beautiful landscapes, palaces, and temples that people can visit as well as there are cities, where people can get a little taste of how ancient Korea was.  South Korea has a lot of the contemporary and ancient culture incorporated into its country, so it would be very intriguing to visit.  The national parks are breathtaking and have so much history behind them.  I love the clothes, so I would bring an extra empty suitcase just to go shopping.  I would also like to go to South Korea to visit my maternal grandfather as my mother and him were very close.  He sadly passed away when she was young.  My mother has not visited his grave in years, and I would like for her to go back to visit him and pay her respects to him.  Japan is so technologically advanced, and it is one of the safest places a woman can travel to (extra bonus).  The people are so polite and friendly, and I love how Japanese people pride themselves on their cleanliness.  There is so much nature to explore as there are many forested hills and mountains.  It would also be nice to visit the cultural monuments, but the one thing I most want to see are the cherry blossoms.  They look so pretty in the pictures I see on social media, so I would like to see them for myself in-person.  I do not have the same level of love for Japanese food as I have for Korean food, but it is pretty up there.  I have always wanted to travel around Europe as I have learned so much of the history behind European countries throughout high school and middle school.  I want to be able to see these monuments for myself and explore the culture, because I believe everything is different once experienced in-person rather than listening to a lecture or reading from a textbook.  I am a very active person, so a visit to Canada would be fantastic to go hiking, camping, snowboarding, and kayaking.  Because Canada is so large, the climate varies greatly, which allows for a wide range of activities year-round.  Also, French and indigenous cultures are significant parts of Canada, so it would be interesting to explore those parts, and I would also like to go to the festivals and events that they have there.  As I have mentioned before, I love exploring nature, so having the chance to explore in some of the 45 national parks that are in Canada is an amazing opportunity.  I have seen pictures of Canada's beautiful landscapes on social media, which makes me more envious and anxious to go visit.  Australia is another place I would want to travel to because of how much it is engulfed in nature.  I mean, there are kangaroos, koalas, great whites, alluring natural landscapes and national parks, and so much more.  Plus, I watch the Australian television show, Bondi Rescue, and would love to visit the beaches.  The only downside with Australia is that there are insects and other poisonous creatures that are smaller than me but could also kill me in a second.  Also, there are insects, such as spiders, that are monstrously big.

To you, what is home?

I think my answer would be very similar to many other people, but to me, home depends on the people who I’m with. I think social interactions and friendships are arguably the most important thing in my life, regardless of where I am. Home is something that changes as I grow as a person, and despite the changes in my life I think I have been fortunate enough to find a community in every new form of home. Of course my family will always be a form of home in my heart, but I also thoroughly enjoy making new friends and learning new things from different people because of how all of our lives are unique. College has definitely allowed me to grow as a person and find a home here at Davis, because the exposure to all of the diverse backgrounds and stories is extremely humbling and I feel that the college experience is making me a better person overall-- at least I hope so. I am privileged to be living in a place here at Davis where I can call home, where I can stay warm during the night and keep myself fed every day. If I was not so fortunate as to have my basic needs met, my answer to this question would be drastically different. I am so thankful for my family in my home in the Bay Area as well as my friends in the Bay Area. They are a form of home. I am thankful for my friends that I have met at Davis because we all succeed and suffer through college together-- they are also my home.

Teleportation so I could go anywhere I wanted in the world whenever I choose

Describe one of your dreams (in terms of what you want to do, see, go, etc).

One of my dreams is to travel throughout most of Asia with the people I love. I would love to go to different places outside Asia, but that is a lot of money that I do not have. But hopefully one day I will. If I could, I would be a flight attendant and travel the world. The first place I would really want to go to is Vietnam. I would prefer to go to Vietnam with my family because they would be able to communicate with others for me. When I was one and a half years old, I traveled to Vietnam with my family but I do not remember what happened because I was too young. So I would like to go back there in the future. As I grew up, my mom and dad always told me stories about their lives and the cities in which they grew up in: Nha Trang and Long Xuyen. I hope to one day go there and explore the places where they were raised. Also, I would love to eat Vietnamese food all day and all night. Another place in Asia I would like to go next is South Korea because I learned so much about the culture and music from watching Korean dramas and listening to kpop. From all of the kdramas I watched, I really want to go there to eat the food and explore the cities. One experience I really want to do in South Korea is to go to a 7/11 in the middle of the night to get food since I can’t do that here. Other countries I would love to go visit are Japan, Singapore, and many more. I would love to go to Singapore because I watched the movie “Crazy Rich Asians.” My main purpose for going to Asia is to eat, explore the scenery, and make memories.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

being able to understand and speak all languages!!

If you could go back in time to relive any moment in your life, what would it be?

I would probably relive VSA's Culture Show in 2019. It was probably the highlight of my entire freshman year! I would relive not only that day, but all the months of preparation leading up to it. I was not in a great spot mentally, so going out to practice and office hours was what I looked forward to all the time. I met so many cool people and it really made me want to do more. I was only in one dance, but I went to the office hours of many other dances just to watch, mingle, and pass time. Originally I didn't sign up for a dance at all, but I felt some FOMO seeing clips of everyone practicing, so I joined Fan Dance last minute haha. I later joined the light crew! On the day of the show, it just felt like such a rush. It was on a Friday, so everyone had to get back from class in time for the show. We also had to greet guests and seeing them all trickle in felt so surreal. It wasn't a full audience but there were sooo many people. As part of the light crew, we had to control all the lights and talk with the backstage and sound crews, which was really cool. We all had headsets and could hear everyone even though we were all at different places in the room (wow technology crazy!!). The light crew was super out of the way of everything, so every member also dancing had to run back and forth between backstage and lights. When my dance came up I had some greasy fans, which I dropped during the performance, but it was fun!! Seeing the show end from the light booth was so crazy, and the end of the show was just as crazy. It really felt like a whole little community. I got to see my family and friends after the show which was really nice since my mom never went to any of my school functions growing up! Overall it was such an amazing experience and I do hope to enjoy it to the fullest next year :)

Seeing VAV in person again (stan VAV), travel to a scenic place like Europe or Korea, watch a meteor shower.

A cat so I can laze around the house and nap all day.

VAV - Senorita (only because it’s one of the only songs that I listened to nonstop for months)

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Having a super brain so I can breeze through all of my hard classes and pass all of them.

What is something you would say to your past self?

I would tell myself to not worry and to not be so insecure. I would tell myself that my pace is not the same as others and that it’s ok to take it one step at a time. My first few years of college were the roughest as I found myself struggling with trying to figure out what I wanted to major in and what I wanted to pursue as a career. I would often compare myself to my friends that seemed to have everything figured out, and they were good at what they studied. Comparing myself to others really lowered my self esteem and I resented myself a lot for not being able to “catch up.” As a third year transfer, I’ve only barely figured out what I want to pursue career-wise and even then I’m not even 100% certain I’ll stick with it. Looking back, I put myself through a lot of sadness and pain because of my insecurities, when I had no reason to rush myself to have my entire life figured out. The people around me may have so many more notable accomplishments than me, but the little things I’ve done to get to where I am today is an accomplishment in and of itself. In the bigger picture, I’m only 20 years old. I have no reason to rush myself when I still have my entire life ahead of me to explore and figure out what I want to do, where I want to be, and who I want to be. Stephanie, you’ve done well and you’re going to do well. I believe in you and I’m proud of you. And to you who is reading this, these words are also for you.

My proudest moment was finishing all 4 levels of graphic design at the community college I transferred from, because those courses were rigorous af and the same professor taught all 4 levels and he was so brutal, a lot of people end up dropping out of his class, by the last level, my class only had 10 people and that was with people from different sections he taught

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

You know, I want the superpower to be able to tell if a guy actually has feelings for me or he’s just playing around IYKYK :^) but I wouldn’t mind having mind control as a superpower either cuz like if I could get my degree without doing any work that’ll cool you feel hehe

If you could go back in time to relive any moment in your life, what would it be? 

If I could go back to relive a moment in my life, it would be Grad Nite after high school graduation. It was the last time my graduating class got to spend time with each other and it was very emotional. I miss going to school with those people, since we were all together for 4 years. My closest friends are from high school. For Grad Nite, my class went to Disneyland. The trip lasted three days. We all traveled together to Disneyland, and it was a long road trip. We took buses there, and tbh it was really uncomfortable. However, it was worth it since I was with people I cared about. I got to spend quality time with my closest friends and had a blast. On the way, we made several stops to different shops and food places. At Disneyland, we went on many different kinds of rides, and it was really exciting. The lights in Disneyland are so pretty when they turn on during the night. We got to watch a huge fireworks show too, and it was so beautiful. Seeing the different shows and Disney characters was a lot of fun. I also enjoyed getting to eat together with my friends and talking about anything we can think of. My friend group and I went to different colleges and I really miss them. This pandemic really sucks, because I really want to hang out with them often again. I miss going to amusement parks with my friends, but I hear they are slowly opening up so yay.

I had a dream where I was serving bowls of noodles. It was such a blissful experience to be able to see all these customers enjoy my food.

What, or who, motivates you to work hard?

To be honest, at this point in my life there are multiple factors that affect my motivation to work hard, but if I were to give one answer it would be myself. In the first three years of high school, I would often dwell on my past mistakes and decisions. I was always super negative towards myself and often put myself down because I felt like my feelings and opinions had no value. However, this all changed when I decided to join a community with a couple of my friends.

During my senior year of high school, I joined a cooking program, basketball league, and started volunteering for the Chinatown community. Ever since I was able to adjust to being outside of my comfort zone, I started to invest in my personal growth and tried to be more involved within my community Towards the end of my freshman year of college, I had an opportunity to mentor a group of 8th graders. I really wanted to make a positive impact in their lives and I strived to be the person I needed when I was in high school. All of these experiences started shaping me and motivating me to live life without any regrets. I started to build more self-esteem, developing an open mindset, and being more gentle with my own emotions. There are many people that I would want to thank for motivating and shaping such as my mentors, Sammi Mei, my close friends, but most importantly the lazy and introverted high school senior, who decided it was time for a change and took a great leap forward.
