The U.S. will use its veto power against a Palestinian bid to be recognized as a member state of the United Nations during a vote at the Security Council expected to take place Thursday evening. Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, described as premature an effort by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to gain member status at the U.N. He said there was not unanimity among the Security Council’s 15 members that the Palestinian Authority had met the criteria for membership, with unresolved questions over the governance of the Gaza Strip, where Israel is in a war to defeat and eliminate the controlling power, Hamas. “And for that reason, the United States is voting no on this proposed Security Council resolution,” Patel said.
Earlier it was revealed that the United States was secretly pressuring other members of the Security Council to shoot down a Palestinian state membership so the US wouldn't have to use its veto as that would lead to a wave of local and international criticism for Joe Biden.

One thing I really admire about Jack over the years at NESN is how he’d check with players directly for pronunciations of their name and multiple times caught errors in the pronunciation guides for other teams doing it. And even tho marchand would purposefully flip flop pronunciations every year just to fuck with him Jack would go with it every team
Anyway he was far from perfect, sometimes problematic and often overdramatic, and I don’t want to white wash anything, but dude gave a serious shit about his job and hockey and most of my childhood was growing up watching him and brick on nesn and it’s gonna be weird having that not be the case. Cheers to a long and storied career and let all games be as fun and over the top and hated by opposing team fans as he made bruins broadcasts

one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method

I hate the “open floor plan” that everyone is obsessed with in houses now. I want nooks and crannies and bizarre floor plans. I don’t need to be able to see what someone is doing on the other side of the house. I want places to hide and lurk and dwell in the shadows. I am the beast who awaits in the labyrinth

spiders have got to figure out contracting I need to be able to call my local spiders union and be like "hey can you send a guy out for a few days the fruit flies are back" and then pay it in spider currency. I'll learn the conversion rates. I'll be generous with my rounding. please.

if someone brought karl marx back to life the first thing I would do is have a shopping montage to get him modern outfits where I shake my head yes or no to the outfits he picks out but then after that we'd get down to serious business

feeling depressed about how the two most recent covid resource posts I've seen go around tumblr have been
1) a zine containing a lot of data I've seen before and have considered mostly reliable, plus a bunch of other stuff, ranging from "references to ongoing community-led research collaboration with scientists" (which aren't "bad information" per se but may not be smoothly translatable to everyday patient use) to "repeating right wing grifter efforts to edge into the covid patient market", without contextualization
2) a sneering essay about how much better things are now and how important it is not to fall for hysterical propaganda about covid, that relies on longitudinal data about the pandemic, without ever noting how dramatically the processes for data collection have changed along that timeframe

i found the onna dairaku scene in question btw. you can see where the page corners are damaged from what looks like the oils of the readers' hands
Tumblr media
Sexualization extended to images of reading, too. Many of the paintings and prints produced by Moronobu and his contemporaries, for instance, depict not “respectable” women but courtesans in the act of reading (see figure 4), and in many scenes the implied narrative is that reading gives way to sex, for in many a shunga scene books lie scattered about the floor. Sometimes the woman portrayed reading is clearly stated not to be a courtesan, but is nevertheless shown in a situation of intimacy (see figure 2). Even the most sober didactic works were not immune to treatment of this sort. A particularly apposite example is an erotic parody of Onna daigaku. This inevitably anonymous and undated piece, entitled Onna dairaku 女大楽(Great Pleasure for Women) and probably published in the 1720s, includes a scene in which a woman’s reading is interrupted by a man who is genitally stimulating her from the other side of the kotatsu. Here the very act of reading is invaded by the fantasies of the erotic tradition.

Why is it that the buzz around the Central World Kitchen massacre lasted so long it practically drowned out everything else, but the ongoing, daily attacks on the Palestine Red Crescent Society don’t get any coverage? Israeli settlers have not stopped at Ramallah, the attack from a few days ago that injured multiple Palestinians; now they’ve moved on to al-Mughayir, a village near it, and the injuries coming out of that are equally barbaric. But it’s not just normal individuals they’re attacking—they’re opening fire on paramedics trying to reach those wounded too.

hi everyone! 🧸🩷
my beautiful wife Laís @sentada just had her first FFS consultation and it's looking like we can get her surgery scheduled for sometime in late summer/early fall of this year. our insurance is notorious for denying FFS claims so we're expecting somewhat of an appeal process, but we were told they should eventually cover it. however we have a high deductible plan so we will have to pay about $3000 out of pocket, which is not feasible for us.
i can't take out any loans due to being on a debt management payment plan that takes literally all of what's leftover from my paychecks after rent and student loans. Laís got laid off and was unemployed since the beginning of this year, she thankfully just started a new job but our savings is completely depleted and on our own it would take years to save enough for the surgery.
getting this surgery would completely change her life so if you have anything to spare we would be eternally grateful. we know everyone is struggling right now so please don't feel any pressure, but anything helps, even $1. we will provide periodic updates in the replies of this post and ongoing proof of medical bills.
