I was making some really good progress on my Urban Fantasy book the other day when my goblin brain decided to tap me on the shoulder and say -
Brain: You know what you wanna write instead?
Me: What....?
Brain: A Dark Fantasy with RH Romance 😉😘
Me: ........*sigh* Okay, how does it start?
Brain: Get this, we are gonna open with the leading lady murdering her husband on their wedding night and then claiming his throne for herself 😈
Me:.....Go on.....

I posit that there is a third zone.
I call it the *Forces self to write but hates everything they are doing so they keep deleting and rewriting the same paragraph over and over until they scream FUCK IT and walk away to eat some cheese*
writing is either *creates entire magic system* *writes three thousand words in a day* *types furiously* *flawless imagery* *natural dialogue* *in the ~zone~ and nothing can stop you* *feeling unbeatable*
or *stares at blank document for two hours*
and there is no in between

I can’t believe I’ve seen his side of the story so many times over the years and yet this is the first time I am seeing hers.
Actually, no I’m not. I’m just disappointed.

Since the Hated Website is pushing Prime Day again, I thought I’d draw attention to the fact that Bookshop.org, the so-called Rebel Alliance to Amazon’s evil Empire, is currently offering free shipping today and tomorrow (June 21st and 22nd) as a counteroffensive. So if there are any books you’ve had your eye on, consider supporting an indie bookstore through them this week!

Hi Friends!
You might have seen PT 1 of this post but in case you haven’t-
I've been really enjoying Sci-fi romances lately, and more specifically Alien Romances. With more people becoming interested in the genre(thank you booktok!)I know from experience that scouring dozens of Goodreads lists can only take you so far. So I decided to make a mass recommendation list for anyone interested! This is perfect for people who are new to the genre or are just looking for something new to read within it! Most of the books on this list are ones that I have personally read but in the interest of diversifying this list as much as possible, I reached out to the Facebook group 'Alien Romance Readers Group', for recommendations. So shout out to the amazing members of that group for helping to make this possible!
This post is entirely focused on Non-humanoid aliens. If you would like to see my post full of book recommendations for Humanoid aliens, you can find that here!
With this list, I have tried to note any particular features or triggers of the books but I am not perfect, so there may be things that I have missed. I still encourage everyone to do their own research on any of the books before reading! You can click all of the titles to go to their Goodreads page.

Non-Humanoid. What is considered non-humanoid? Once again this is a matter of personal opinion, but my general rule for aliens falling in this category is if they couldn't pass as a human if you only saw their silhouette, they have extra limbs, or if their overall appearance strongly radiates unhuman. Such as being covered in scales, having a tail and wings, as well as unique facial features. Or maybe they are 7ft tall, covered in fur and have a tail.

Mandy and the Tentacle Monster (Urf Oomons) by Bebe Harper #Slow-burn #Slightly Graphic Sex #Humans as Alien Pets #1 Book so far but more coming

Her alien captor finds everything about his new pet adorable, from her tiny toes to her blunted claws to her shiny mane. He will do everything in his power to make sure that his cute little pet remains healthy and happy. But what happens when this giant tentacled alien finds out his lovely pet is a sentient person who wants more from him than pets and treats?
Xander Alien Halfbreed (Human Female Abduction) by C.Y. Croc #4 Books #Different Alien each book
"No other females awoke my passion until her!" Xander runs a fighting dome with his uncle on the colonized Planet Desra. The fighters are all female and they are all prisoners, purchased from the vile rat-like aliens the Taraquets, who transport them to the prison planet Prismn. They have two choices, either go straight to Prismn and see out their sentences or be sold to Xander, to fight in his dome for their freedom. Fenolla wakes up on a new planet surrounded by a multitude of aliens, and none of them speak her language - but that is not the biggest surprise. The biggest shock is that she's being held prisoner by a 7 ft white haired blue alien with a rattling tail, skin bumps that raise with his temper and body bone blades. He wasn't the one to abduct her but he sees potential in her to help him get the dome off his uncle. Will the chance to do her dream job as fight trainer lure her? Will her attraction to her alien capture get in the way of her bid for freedom? Will she want to leave?
The Scorpion’s Mate (Iriduan Test Subjects) by Susan Trombley #Very non-human aliens #Not exactly dark romance but there are dark themes #Aliens were test subjects #Slow burn #Explicit Sex #Violence #6 books
Claire has never really fit in with everyone around her, but she's carved out a life for herself using her own unique style and artistic ability to support herself on the Internet. The last thing she expects is to be abducted by aliens and dropped into a research facility, where a genetically-engineered alien soldier chooses her as his life-mate. Thrax’s pheromones are compelling, and his status as a fellow unwilling test subject makes them allies, but Claire isn't certain she can trust someone who is convinced she belongs to him, when all she wants to do is find a way to return home to Earth—a place that her devoted alien can never follow, because there’s no way the scorpion-like alien would ever be able to pass for human. Still, she’ll accept help where she can find it, so she doesn't hesitate to escape with Thrax from the facility, though their time running from their pursuers in the warrens beneath the research facility will forever change Claire, and could make it impossible for her to return to Earth. But will there be anywhere else in the galaxy they can go where their love will be accepted?

Ondry may not understand humans, but he recognizes a wounded soul, and his need to protect Liam is quickly outpacing his common sense. I Married a Lizardman by Regine Abel #Mates Program #Slow burn #Explicit Sex #Found Family(ish)
Scaly, grumpy, but oh so cuddly... As a third daughter on the farming colony of Meterion, Susan’s future prospects aren’t too promising. A pretty face, top-notch skills, and hard work mean nothing if your dowry doesn’t include fertile lands. With her twenty-fifth birthday approaching, and no suitors even remotely sniffing in her general direction, Susan will be forced to leave the family lands to work as an indentured servant in the capital city. Her only way out is to settle for an arranged marriage through the PMA – the Prime Mating Agency. She just never expected to be paired to a grumpy, massive lizardman, and above all not to grow so fond of his scales and quirky ways. With everything going on, the last thing Olix needs is a mate, especially a squishy, scaleless, off-worlder with strange ways, and an obsession with farming. He is a Hunter, not a dirt digger. The Seer must have been mistaken when she insisted that, for the sake of the people, he take a mate from the stars. How can such a tiny thing be their salvation? And yet, his Susan’s softness is disturbingly addictive while hiding a surprising resilience. With his ancestral lands on the line and the future of the clans threatened, could this wisp of a woman turn their fate around?

Contagion by Amanda Milo #OCD Alien #Creepy alien that is scared of everything #Short read #Humorous #SA mentioned but not shown #Standalone but technically a second book #Explict sex
One OCD neat freak alien. One human woman. Both are abducted and held captive in a very unsterile environment. What more could go wrong? ~ Simmi: I’ve broken free and I’ve also freed the human who was held captive with me. But I don’t know where we are, and I don’t know where my home is. The local wildlife may be smaller than I am, and maybe they don't have fangs near as large as mine, but I’m still terrified. My issues with germs--and my uncompromising avoidance of all the things that I’m afraid of coming into contact with--is going to get me killed in this wilderness. Thankfully, Aurora lets me follow her. Thankfully, she seems to know the way out of this endless and inhospitable woodland and desert biome. But by the end of our journey, she’ll suspect she’s harboring a contagion. I have no way to know it, but she’s afraid to tell me. Afraid of how I’ll react once I find out what she’s carrying.

Humanoid. What makes an alien humanoid? This answer may differ a bit from person to person but for me- If you were to only see the silhouette of the person and could reasonably assume they were a human, then they fall into this category. This means that these aliens may have scales, horns, tails, tusks, or other little differences. But they may also look entirely human!

Dark Planet Warriors by Anna Carven #Swearing #Violence #Explicit Sex Scenes #Different couples every book #First Couple has reoccurring books #8 Books+Novellas+Companion Series #One of my Favorites!
Abbey
Some scary looking aliens have just boarded Fortuna Tau, our little asteroid mining station. Kordolians, by the looks of things. What the hell do they want with this floating rust bucket? What are they even doing here?
In the grand scheme of things, Earth is a total backwater, and the Solar System is the galactic equivalent of Hicksville. That's why aliens rarely bother to come to this corner of the universe. And Kordolians are usually too busy conquering the important parts of the nine galaxies to bother with us.
But it looks as if their battle cruiser is broken. Probably shot up in a firefight. They're going to use every means necessary to fix it, even if it means putting Fortuna Tau on lockdown. I just hope they don't decide to enslave us and ship us off to some remote alien planet.
Come to think of it, I've never seen a Kordolian up close before. They're huge, with strange silver skin and pointed ears. They have freaky nano-armor. And they're packing a serious arsenal. Our human technology has no chance against their weapons. When I encounter their General, I find him insufferable. Arrogant. Domineering. He won't tell me anything.
I guess that's what happens when your race is kicking ass across the nine galaxies. You get pigheaded. So why do I keep running into him? Why is he looking at me funny? And what's with this weird feeling I get when he's around? I really hope these guys fix their ship and go away soon, because I get the feeling they could be major trouble.
Tarak
Sucked into a wormhole during a fierce skirmish with an enemy ship. Spat out near a human mining station in a remote corner of the nine galaxies. Stuck with weak humans who operate with inferior metals and technology.
This mission couldn't get any worse. We need to fix our craft before the wormhole collapses. We need to hunt the cursed Xargek monsters that have infiltrated this human rust-bucket. And these infernal headaches of mine are getting worse.
I don't really care about these humans. Their existence makes no sense to me. All I care about is killing Xargek and getting back to my home planet, Kythia. This situation is tiresome. The light of the star humans call the Sun burns my eyes. I crave Kythia's darkness.
So why has this crazy human female captured my attention? She's messy, awkward and she babbles nonsense half the time. These humans are crazy. I don't understand them at all. Especially this female. Why do I keep coming back to her?
I need to leave this place before I go insane.

Transcendence by Shay Savage #Technically not Sci-fi but is often grouped with it #Caveman #Told from Cavemans pov #Explicit Sex #Different Languages #Slow burn #Time travel? #Honestly on the top of my TBR #Has a novella
It's said that women and men are from two different planets when it comes to communication, but how can they overcome the obstacles of prehistoric times when one of them simply doesn't have the ability to comprehend language? Ehd's a caveman living on his own in a harsh wilderness. He's strong and intelligent, but completely alone. When he finds a beautiful young woman in his pit trap, it's obvious to him that she is meant to be his mate. He doesn't know where she came from, she's wearing some pretty odd clothing, and she makes a lot of noises with her mouth that give him a headache. Still, he's determined to fulfill his purpose in life - provide for her, protect her, and put a baby in her. Elizabeth doesn't know where she is or exactly how she got there. She's confused and distressed by her predicament, and there's a caveman hauling her back to his cavehome. She's not at all interested in Ehd's primitive advances, and she just can't seem to get him to listen. No matter what she tries, getting her point across to this primitive but beautiful man is a constant - and often hilarious - struggle. With only each other for company, they must rely on one another to fight the dangers of the wild and prepare for the winter months. As they struggle to coexist, theirs becomes a love story that transcends language and time.
Draekon Warrior (Rebel Force) by Lee Savino & Lili Zander #Dragon Shifter #Explicit Sex #5 Books
Captured in space. Imprisoned. Sold to the highest bidder. But my biggest problem is this bossy, aggravating, impossible, alien who’s supposed to rescue me. The bossy alien I kissed. That might have been a mistake. Kadir is dangerous. I’ve seen him fight, and his body is littered with scars. He’s a soldier. A warrior. And when he loses control, he turns into a big scary dragon and breathes fire. Everyone’s terrified of him. I’m not. No, call me the biggest fool in the galaxy, because I’m attracted to the big jerk.
Kadir: When I first met the small human I was sent to rescue, she punched me in the jaw. And broke her wrist in the process. Irrational woman. Then she insists that the two of us set out immediately to find her missing friend. No, what I have to do is get Alice Hernandez to safety. She’s soft, yet she’s strong. Fragile, yet so brave. She’s everything I’ve never known I wanted. Everything I can’t let myself have. When the scientists tortured me, they broke me. And when Alice finds out the truth about the fearsome, raging dragon inside me, I will lose her.

The Wolf’s Witch By Rachel Medhurst
I haven’t read many books with the ‘Rejected Mates’ theme but after reading the first chapter of this book for free I found that I needed to read more. The inclusion of a prominent character with mental health issues really got my attention and the plot premise was very intriguing. There were some things that I wish had been done better but overall I did enjoy the book and will be picking up the next one.
You can find my full review of the book on Goodreads!

Contagion Amanda Milo EBook (available on KindleUnlimited)
This has to be one of the most hilariously adorable (and somehow still spicy) books I’ve ever read. Simmi is an intimidating looking alien with a completely opposite personality. He’s scared to death of germs and is constantly worried about him and Aurora coming into contact with them as they try to make their way out of the jungle and back to civilization. This leads to lots of panic induced freak outs that are hard not to laugh at!
“We’re probably going to contract some disease,” I tell her seriously.
“No panicking, Simmi. We’re past that.”
I nictate down at her. “I’ll never be past panicking. Not for any of my days.”
- Amanda Milo, Contagion
The whole book is told from Simmi’s pov which I found to be a welcome aspect to the book and overall made it that much more exciting to read. This wasn't a long read at all and found myself finishing it in one sitting, mostly because I was loath to put it down! The humor was there throughout the book keeping the general tone pretty upbeat with just the right amount of tension and spice!
This is definitely a great book if you are looking for something light hearted and not too lengthy of a read.

With the weather brightening up where I live, I’ve started to feel more motivated and excited to do the things I enjoy. Part of that involves tackling my TBR pile. With my intent to be choosing a complete book series, I’ve narrowed it down to two box sets I have downloaded -
1. Witches Bite Series by Stephanie Foxe
2. Legacy Series by McKenzie Hunter
I’d love to hear from you guys! Which series should I tackle first?

Silver  V.C. Lancaster Purchased (available on KindleUnlimited)
Let me start this off by saying that I’ve never been all that interested in Superhero's. It’s not that I dislike them, I’ve just never been motivated to get into them. So when I saw the obvious nods to Superman in this book's summary I was a bit hesitant to read it. But since I’ve enjoyed all of the other books I’ve read from V.C Lancaster I thought ‘Why not?’
And I’m honestly so happy I did!
Lancaster has a way of writing such well rounded characters that even when you are upset with them, they still feel authentic and believable. While I didn’t agree with some of Lane's thoughts and actions towards the beginning of the book, there wasn’t a time where I didn’t understand why she acted the way she did. Her character came close a few times to crossing that invisible line but Lancaster was able to expertly navigate those tense moments and in the end I found that I really enjoyed Lane’s head-strong, determined personality.
The aliens in this book weren’t super alien-y, with no tentacles, tails, or extra limbs in sight, but there was enough of a physical and cultural difference that you wouldn’t easily mistake them for humans (at least not without their disguises). So if you like your aliens closer to the human-looking side but with the sexy alien benefits then I think you will be very happy with Kent.
As I stated before Superheroes are not my thing, but after reading this book I might have to reevaluate that idea.

Yesterday I found one of my old flash drives and decided to take a look at what I may have stored on it. I was expecting some old college papers and maybe some photos.
Instead I found several old story drafts and a finished short story. I reread it and can't help but cringe. Hard.

The content is there but the execution......leaves something to be desired 😬

"That's kind of stalker-y. You know you could just page them."
She looked up from her tablet, a GPS app open with a blinking red dot indicating where their friend was, and raised an eyebrow in question.
He pointed toward one of the speakers on the ceiling with a grin.
"This is a Target, not an abandoned ruin. Just ask a worker to page them on the intercom."
She turned away quickly, blonde ponytail swinging, and continued at a determined pace toward the coffee mug aisle.
"My way's faster."

So as to not clog anyone's feed I've decided to combine my reviews for multiple books in a series to just one longer post. If you want to keep up to date with what I am reading you can always find me on Goodreads or follow me on Twitter.
Grime and Punishment (Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Services Book Two)
Demitria Lunetta, Kate Karyus Quinn and Marley Lynn
Available on KindleUnlimited
This book picks up exactly where the first one leaves off, which means we open on a high note. Unfortunately we don’t stay there. I feel like the plot of this book was much weaker and less interesting then the first one. Yes, we are still investigating the vampire serial killer that seems to be obsessed with Paige but it isn’t the main focus and the topic only pops up on occasion.
The hunt for the VSK takes a backseat when a pregnant vampire ends up on Paige’s doorstep asking for help. While this plot line gives the readers a closer look at what a toxic human-supe relationship can look like and gives Paige pause in her own understanding of her feelings towards supes in general, overall it felt lackluster. The only thing making the situation really unique is the fact the woman was a vampire. Other than that it felt like a typical abusive husband storyline.
I really enjoy the snark and banter between Nico and Paige in this book, but I wish they would spend more time together actually doing something other than just sassing each other to death. I feel like there are missed opportunities for them to work together and lean on each other. Scenes that would help build chemistry between the two of them. Instead, those possible scenes are written off with Nico or Paige going off alone in a sort of ‘fuck you’ to each other.
Even though this book felt weaker then the first, I still enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next one.
A Farewell to Charms (Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Services Book Three)
Demitria Lunetta, Kate Karyus Quinn and Marley Lynn
Available on KindleUnlimited
I’ll be honest. My feelings are all over the place with this book. Overall I feel like it's much better than the second, putting it back on par with the first book, but there were some scenes in this book that drove me crazy.
The vampire serial killer plot ends up getting more screen time in this book and the balance between that plot and the new plot introduced flow much better than in previous books. Compared to the vampire pregnancy in the second book, I found this plot to be much more interesting and well done. I wasn’t able to figure out who the bad guys were until right before the reveal. Which is a nice change from the first two books.
Once again I enjoy the banter between Paige and Nico but they don’t spend a lot of time together, with opportunities arising for them to work together but once again don’t happen. They just feel like missed opportunities. It’s one of the big problems I have with them as a potential couple. The flirting and snark is nice, but I want to see that they can really count on each other. We get some minor snippets of that through the past three books but it doesn’t feel like enough.
Especially when you add in another problem I have with them. They seem to randomly break character and act unnecessarily mean to each other. For example, Paige will start to think about Nico in a more positive way and in the next scene he will walk in and be a complete ass. Immediately changing Paige’s thoughts back to negative. It feels like a cop out to keep their budding relationship ‘slow-burn’. But I think it ultimately hurts them.
While I do have some problems with how Paige and Nico have been interacting over the past three books, I was glad to see some progress in this book and am hoping that in the next there is even more.
Like I said earlier, the vampire serial killer plot gets more screen time in this book and becomes more of a focus. Which is good and bad. It is good to get some actual progress on that plot other than dead bodies ending up on Paige’s doorstep. But bad because it looks like the VSK isn’t who I thought it would be. Which should be a good thing right? Well... I guess it is, but here’s my problem.
It seemed like through the whole last book and majority of this one, a certain character was looking to be the killer, and the way they were explained away doesn’t exactly sit right with me. I’m not sure if it’s just because leading up to the reveal Paige was being stupid AF and annoying the crap out of me or if its because so much evidence and events point to him that it feels weird for it not to be him.
Tumblr media
Either way I still don’t trust him.
The Lying, The Witch & The Werewolf (Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Services Book Four)
Demitria Lunetta, Kate Karyus Quinn and Marley Lynn Available on KindleUnlimited
Oh my gosh! This book was so good! Any of the issues I had with the earlier books were pretty much null and void when it came to this one and I think it’s safe to say this is my favorite by far! I love the characters, the sass and wit, and who doesn’t love a supernatural sex cult?
Together We Come is a sex cult that believes humans and supes can over come their differences if they just bang it out. There is something about cults that I find endlessly fascinating. So when Paige is hired to go undercover at Together We Come, all I could think was….
Tumblr media
Cue the innuendos, giant vibrators, and a stuffed dalmanther God, and once again I find myself struggling to sleep in lieu of continuing to read this book.
We get to see some real growth in Paige throughout this book, with her starting to come to terms with the fact she doesn’t have a ‘normal’ life and that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And I loved getting to see more of Nico in this book. It was one of my biggest criticisms of the earlier books, so I am happy that we got to see the two of them together and see more of the chemistry between them!

Sensitivity readers are so important!! 👏🏻👏🏻
So here’s a ‘hot take’ for any fellow white writers who want to write diversely and write about characters that come from different backgrounds than you.
Just do it.
Especially in first drafts, just write them as people and try to be as empathic as you can in writing them.
Just write them.
Once you have a first or zero draft?
Research.
Write your second draft, maybe even a third.
Find diverse Beta readers who can accurately tell you if the characters you’ve written are believable/respectful.
Write another draft/edit.
Do more research if you have to. Find sources that are from the people you are writing about.
Hire sensitivity readers.
Do another round of Beta reading.
And that’s it.
But for a first draft? Create your characters as if you’re meeting a new person. Who are they, what’s their name, what’s their background?
What are they trying to tell you?
Be empathic and imaginative.
It’s okay.
