I have been so mesmerized by plotting star points and creating 3D models of the constellations that I forgot to post the animation for the Bull. Taurus is home to two asterisms closest to Earth, the Pleiades and the Hyades. These star clusters fall within this constellation and are visible to the naked eye. The Bull is a large constellation and can be found in the northern hemisphere’s winter and spring sky. NY will always have my heart. I extended my trip to take in old sights, deep memories, new spots, reinvention everywhere and always energizing and amazing. Even in a pandemic. I enjoyed the quietness of my time. I walked through an empty Times Sq. Saw Calder at Moma, Julie Mehretu at the Whitney. Stayed in my old hood in Chelsea and then East Village. I have been researching historical interpretations of constellations dating back to 3rd century BC, and it struck me that many ancient astronomers, mathematicians, historians, geographers and philosophers had interests in astrology. This inspired me to take an online course to learn the foundations of astrology and gain a better understanding of our relationship to the stars from another angle. Today we input dates, times and places into a computer and get a visual output of a chart which shows where the sun, moon, planets and constellations were positioned at the time of birth. However, these calculations are complex and based on spherical trigonometry and geometry. Currently, my brain is trying to process this math of astro navigation as I begin to map the true placement of the stars for my latest art project. In the meantime… the Ram is the first sign in the zodiac and I have been trying to find out why. The non-woo-woo (disclaimer: I love woo-woo) explanation I can find is that when, in 130 BC, Hipparchus discovered the precession of the equinoxes he coined the term “First Point of Aries” which is the location of the vernal equinox and a reference point in our celestial coordinate system. Pisces is the Latin plural for fish and is the 14th largest constellation found in the Northern sky. This constellation is not easy to view with the naked eye but is seen as a distant pair of fish connected by one cord joined at a single point. In Roman myth, Venus and Cupid tied themselves with a rope and transformed into fish to escape the monster Typhon. The second image in this post is "Pisces”, one of the cards in the incredible Urania’s Mirror, first published in 1824 and engraved by Sidney Hall. The card pictured is from the second edition. An extra little fact…Pisces contains the point at which the sun crosses the celestial equator into the Northern Hemisphere marking the vernal equinox around March 20. Commemorating the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Ox, I would like to celebrate one of my most important artistic influences, Ai Wei Wei. Not only is @aiww one of the most brilliant and relevant artists of our time, he is a legendary activist. I have been working with the Zodiac in many forms for over 30 years and Ai seems to be a kindred spirit in his desire to depict the Zodiac in varied forms. In May 2018 Wei Wei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads came to Denver. He recreates the famous twelve bronze animal heads that once adorned the Zodiac Fountain in Yuan Ming Yuan, the Old Summer Palace in Beijing. Cast around 1750, the original heads were looted by Anglo-French troops who destroyed the Palace in 1860 during the Second Opium War. Seen in the first picture is the Ox. In December 2018 I visited Zodiac, an exhibit at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in Los Angeles. The center of the space was filled with 5,929 wooden stools from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties and the Republican period, gathered from villages across northern China. Complementing the stools are the Zodiac works composed from thousands of plastic LEGO bricks. The image on the left is the Ox. During this strange year of isolation and introspection I find myself writing random poetry.
