He wasn't supposed to have feelings. He was supposed to drive you home from the party as Kacey asked him to. He wasn't supposed to fall in love with the way the faint light from the traffic lights lit your face. He wasn't supposed to fall in love with the way you tried your hardest not to fall asleep in your drunken state. He wasn't supposed to fall in love with the way your eyes would flutter open and closed as you forced your eyes open. He wasn't supposed to fall in love with the way you asked for his jacket because you were cold, and he definitely wasn't supposed to fall in love with how you looked wearing his jacket. He wasn't supposed to wish you would only ever wear this jacket and only his jackets. Tyson wasn't supposed to fall in love with you, but he did, and now Kacey is definitely going to kill him.
It all started when Kacey came home from kindergarten saying she made a new best friend and that everyone in the family had to love this friend as much as Kacey.
Tyson can still remember the first time you came over to their house for a playdate. He remembers Kacey shook your mother's hand before hugging you tightly. He remembers his mom shaking your mom's hand before they chatted for a bit about whatever moms talk about. Tyson remembers he was standing by the stair's railing shyly, not sure what to do. He was intrigued when he saw you. Tyson wanted to be your friend, too, but you were Kaceyâs friend, and he doubted that Kacey would let him play with you two. Tyson remembers his mom introducing him to you and your mom. He remembers you smiled when he waved before turning back to Kacey. It was cemented there. It was at that first look that set it in stone that you would be in the Josts life forever. It was written in the stars. Nothing could change that.
When the three of you were little and you'd be at the Josts for a playdate, Kacey wanted Tyson nowhere near you two. She'd rather play with her best friend without her pesky older brother. You insisted, though. You always said that Tyson should get to play, too. Kacey always said yes because, maybe, just maybe, you were right. You always let Tyson be the family dog when you played "House." Tyson got to be the knight in shining armor when you played princes and princesses and consorts. If you were watching a movie, you always let Tyson sit next to you and share your popcorn with him. Even from the small age of 5, you had Tyson wrapped around your finger and no one, including you, realized.
Tyson drops you off at your apartment, per Kaceyâs directions, and helps you up to your apartment. Just as Tyson is about to leave, you say, "you can sleep on the couch instead of going home so late."
He shakes his head. "I should get home." What was Tyson supposed to say? No, I can't stay at your apartment or else I'll fall more in love with my sister's best friend.Â
"You sure?"
Tyson is pretty sure he said no to your final question, but as he lays on your couch with a blanket, Tyson isn't sure what went wrong. He's laying there trying to figure out where he screwed up and itâs not just about staying the night.
He can't sleep as he tries to figure out where you were no longer Kaceyâs best friend who was very off-limits to Kaceyâs best friend who Tyson wanted very badly.
In eighth grade, Tyson recalls wanting to take you as his date to eighth grade formal. He was going to take you as a friend because you were a friend and all of Tyson's friends were taking dates. He didn't want to be the only one not to have a date. Tyson recalls that he talked to his grandfather about it and needed the advice.
"Are you sure that's a good idea, Tyson?" Tyson's grandfather asks.
"Yeah, why?" he responds.
"I don't think so, Tys. You're asking your sister's best friend."
"Yeah, but sheâs my friend, too."
"But sheâs Kacey's best friend first," Tyson's grandfather explains. "As the older brother, Kacey's friends are off-limits."
"Oh," Tyson replied glumly. Is that where everything changed? Is that where Tyson should have realized and distanced himself from you? Would all that have stopped him from falling in love with you?
As Tyson lies awake on your couch and you're sleeping off your hangover, Tyson is still trying to figure out how he let himself harbor these feelings for you. In high school, Tyson didnât distance himself. He remained your friend and grew closer to you. Although you were Kaceyâs best friend, Tyson would consider you one of his best friends, too, even if you didnât. You were there for everything. You were there for his games, his high school graduation, his draft, his first NHL game, each tournament. Every single moment of importance in Tysonâs life, you were there for. You, somehow, were there visiting when Tyson got his hattrick. Through everything, you were there. He canât lose you in his life, but how can Tyson, in good heart, be your friendâKaceyâs best friendâif he were in love with you? When Tyson was thirteen, he didnât quite understand why he couldnât take you as his date, but now that heâs grown and understands the bond that you and Kacey share, he could never do that to you or Kacey.
Despite his mind spinning with realization, Tyson managed to get a good nightâs rest. He slept so well that one wouldnât even think that he had a life-altering realization that heâs in love with his sisterâs best friend. He woke up at nine in the morning to your quiet apartment. As much as he wants to leave and pretend he never spent the night on your couch, Tyson canât in good heart do that. Even though he wants to sever any ties with you, you were still one of Tysonâs closest friends.
âOh, good morning,â you mumble when you see the back of Tysonâs head. At your words, Tysonâs body stills and he slowly gets up as if someone were holding him hostage. âThanks for driving me home last night.â
âUh, sure,â he replies, stiff. Your eyebrows furrow in confusion at Tysonâs mannerisms as you walk to the kitchen to get some water.
âDid you want some water?â you ask.
âNope, Iâm okay,â Tyson replies. He was talking to you as if you were a superior officer in the military. He was standing straight and stiff and looked incredibly uncomfortable.
âOkay,â you answer softly but still get a glass of water for Tyson.
âI didnâtââ
âJust take the water,â you interrupt and take a sip of yours. âIâm meeting Kacey for brunch later. Did you want to come?â
Tyson thinks it over. Itâd be nice to have brunch with his sister, but on the other hand, you were going to be there. How does he look you and Kacey in the eye knowing he loves you and betrayed Kacey? Although Kacey never outright stated it, Tyson knows that you were off-limits. He couldnât possibly imagine dating you and breaking up with you and hurting you and Kaceyâtwo of the most important people in his life.
You snicker. âWhatâs taking you so long to figure out, Tys? Itâs not rocket science.â
âYeah, but,â Tyson begins but stops himself.
âBut, what? Youâve never turned down an opportunity to have brunch with two of your most favorite people in the world. What makes today so different?â
I love you, Tyson thinks to himself. Everything has changed, and Tyson doesnât know anything anymore. Tyson knows he should say no and go back to his momâs house. He should let you and Kacey have your own time. Tyson needs to figure out how he can maintain his friendship while simultaneously loving you to the ends of the earth. Tyson also knows that the minute Kacey sees him, sheâll know. Kacey has always been good at figuring out when Tyson is smitten with someone. Sheâll know, and Tyson would have ruined the relationships between you and Kacey, him and Kacey, and you and him. Itâs too much to risk.
âSure, Iâll go,â Tyson responds. He wasnât supposed to say that. He was supposed to respectfully decline, but here he is, twisted around your finger, and can never say no to you.
âOh, perfect!â you respond and place your glass in the sink. âWeâre meeting her at ten, so quickly get ready! You can use my guest shower, and I probably have a spare change of clothes for you.â
Freshly showered, wearing clothes that smell like you, and waiting for Kaceyâs wrath, Tyson is standing next to you waiting for Kacey to show up. Sensing his nervousness, you place your hand on his bicep.
âDonât worry,â you say softly. âKacey knows you slept on my couch. It was her idea for you to eat with us, so donât worry.â
âThatâs not what Iâm worried about,â Tyson mumbles.
You furrow your eyebrows. âIâm sorry?â
Tysonâs eyes go wide. He didnât mean to say that out loud. âNevermind, donât worry about it.â
You smile. âOkay. Oh, I see Kacey.â
Tyson looks on with a smile as you run up to Kacey and wrap her in a giant hug in greeting. Was it obvious how enamored Tyson was with you?
You were walking over with Kacey when Kaceyâs eyes land on her brother and her smile drops. Kacey was good at calling Tyson out, but she wasnât that good.
âHey, Kace,â Tyson says in greeting as he hugs his sister.
âTys,â she says bitterly. She turns back to you and begins talking to you. Your laugh reverberates through Tysonâs body as you react to something Kacey says. His body is on fire. His heart is beating erratically and sweat is forming on his back. His palms are sweating, and his phone in his hand is struggling to stay on his hold. You are driving Tyson crazy, and he doesnât know what to do about it.
âHey, do you think you get us a table?â Kacey asks you. âI have to talk to Tyson about some, uh, family things.â
âYeah, sure,â you reply and head into the restaurant.
Once youâre inside the restaurant and at a safe distance from the pair, Kacey rips into Tyson. âMy best friend, really, Tys?â
âI didnât mean to!â Tyson quickly defends. âIt just happened! One momentââ
Kacey puts her hand up to stop Tyson from talking. She puts her hand up to her temple and massages it. Tyson wipes his palms on his pants to relieve the sweat. Tyson should have pulled back from your life the minute he realized you were both getting too close. You were his sisterâs best friend, so Tyson should have known better!
âLook, Kace, Iâm sorry I fell in love with your best friend,â Tyson says apologetically. âOne moment sheâs your best friend who you asked me to drive home, and the next moment sheâs this woman who I canât get enough of and just want to love.â
âDid you just apologize for falling in love with my best friend?â Kacey asks exasperatedly.
âYeah?â
Kacey shakes her head. âIâm not mad at you. Just because you think you fell in love with her last night doesnât mean you havenât been in love with her your entire life.â
âKace, what are you talking about?â
âYouâve been looking at her like she hung the stars ever since you first met her. Youâve loved her forever, Tyson. You were just not smart enough to realize.â
âKace.â
âTys.â
âBut what about your friendship?â
âWhat about it?â Kacey asks.
âWouldnât your brother and best friend dating be awkward?â
She shrugs. âI mean if you hurt her, yes, but if not, then no? Look, it doesnât really matter because she loves you, too. Sheâs known for way longer than you have.â
Tyson shakes his head. âStop, this must be some kind of game. Are you sure youâre not mad at me for falling in love with your best friend?â
âDo you know the number of sleepovers weâve had where she talked about her feelings for you? Since like freshman year of high school. Tys, she loves you just as much as you love her, but the only difference is that sheâs known for longer than you have.â
âKacey, I donât know.â
âTyson, I do know. Youâre going to get through brunch and then tell her as she drives you back to her apartment to get your car. I canât keep watching you look at my friend with all the love in your eyes and not do anything about it. The difference between then and now is that you finally know and can do something about it.â
Youâre looking down at your phone when you walk back to Kacey and Tyson. You knew they were talkingâit looked more like arguingâso you approached slowly. The minute you stood next to Tyson, their conversation ended abruptly with Kacey finishing her sentence. âThey said they just need to clear a table for us, so we can go inside and wait.â
âPerfect!â Kacey says and links her arm with yours as you both walk to the restaurant and Tyson follows in suit.
Getting through brunch was a nightmare. Kacey, being the evil sister, sat on one side of the table while you and Tyson sat next to each other on the other side. Every time you would pick up your glass to take a sip or shuffle in your chair or grab your napkin, your arm would brush up against Tyson. He knows youâre probably not doing it on purpose as the restaurant is very tight, but now that Tyson knows you love him, too, he canât help but wonder. Were all those innocent touches and brushes of a hand or shoulder acts of love or was it just a coincidence? Were all those times Kacey invited him along since high school a way for her to get you and Tyson together or was it Kacey just being a good sister? Were all those times Kacey would let Tyson play with you two her realizing her brother loves you or was it her being a good sister once again
Tyson vaguely remembers what he ate. All Tyson can remember is your body next to his. He remembers the sound of your laugh as Kacey tells a funny story or joke about something or anything. He remembers the way you snorted into your glass as Kacey told the punchline wrong and it made you laugh. He remembers your little elbow nudges trying to zone and include Tyson into the conversation. He remembers the one time that your hand just barely grazed a smidge of his thigh. You were trying to place your napkin back on your lap, and as you did so, your pinky finger just barely touched Tysonâs thigh. It was barely a touch, but to Tyson, it was everything. His face went red, and the sweat pooled under his arms and at the back of his neck at the feeling of a centimeter of your finger on his thigh. If this is how Tyson reacts to a barely-there touch, then itâs inscrutable as to how heâd react to your hand in his. The feelings Tyson has for you were already strong, but with him realizing how he feels, theyâve only begun to aggrandize. Tyson canât imagine loving you more than he already does, but as each second goes by where Tyson is sitting next to you, he falls more and more in love with you.
Thankfully, Tyson is resilient and able to bounce back when the check comes. When you reach for it, Tyson is able to grab it a second before you.
âOh, come on, Tys, let me pay,â you complain. âYou did have to drive me home last night.â
âYou say that like itâs a chore,â Tyson teases, a complete 180 from where he was moments ago. âLet me treat you.â
âAnd his sister,â Kacey interjects.
âFine, but next time, brunch is on me,â you relent.
Next time will be on me because hopefully, it will be a date, Tyson thinks to himself.
After saying your goodbyes to Kacey, you and Tyson walk towards your car to head back to your apartment. You notice that Tyson is quiet. Heâs not a boisterous, cocky guy, but when heâs around you and Kacey, heâs full of life. Today, though, he was quiet and stiff and definitely not like the Tyson you know.
âIs everything okay?â you ask.
âHm, yeah, why wouldnât it be?â Tyson rushes out. He was, once again, stuck in a daydream caused by, once again, his love for you.
You shrug. âYouâve been quiet. I know itâs not the couch that made you this way because my couch is very comfortable.â
âYour couch is comfortable,â Tyson quietly and awkwardly agrees.
You bump his shoulder. âYou know you can talk to me if something is wrong.â
âYeah, I doubt I can talk to you about falling in love with my sisterâs best friend.â
You stop walking in shock. Youâve loved Tyson for as long as you could remember. For that same amount of time, it was always that Tyson never felt the same. He was your best friendâs brother and thatâs where the line was drawn. Despite Kaceyâs insistence that Tyson, too, felt the same, you never believed her. There was an unproclaimed code that best friendâs brothers and sisterâs best friends were off-limits. Tyson loves his family and wouldnât ever throw that bond away for a love interest.
It takes Tyson a few seconds to realize youâve stopped walking. He doesnât realize why you stopped until he sees the shocked expression on your face and remembers his last sentence. Yeah, I doubt I can talk to you about falling in love with my sisterâs best friend. He wasnât supposed to say that. Tyson is pretty sure he said that in his head, not out loud. Obviously, Tyson was very wrong in his assumption as you heard his words.
âIf you, um, want my advice,â you begin, âI think you should ask your sisterâs best friend on a date.â
Tyson smiles. âAnd what makes you think that?â
âBecause your sisterâs best friend told me she fell in love with her best friendâs brother, and sheâs been in love with him since high school.â
âHigh school, eh?â Tyson asks as he places his hands on your waist.
âProbably way before that, but thatâs when I realized that Iââ
Youâre interrupted when Tyson places his lips gently on yours. You wrap your arms around his shoulder and pull him close to you.
âWill you go on a date with me?â Tyson asks after he pulls away.
You smile. âIâve been waiting for you to ask that since I was fourteen.â
