about ‘Blue Nights’

I’m going to attempt now to write a little reflection on Joan Didion’s Blue Nights, which I enjoyed, and read very quickly. I’ve only read a few other Didion books: Slouching Towards Bethlehem, which I thought was excellent, and The Year of Magical Thinking, which I thought was horribly and misleadingly titled.

At this point, if you plan to read Blue Nights but haven’t yet, I would recommend you skip the rest of this post, because I’m sure my own sloppy discussion of some ideas in the book is not worth losing the pleasure of encountering them for the first time through Didion’s beautiful writing. Seriously. This isn’t well written. This blog is just a place for me to examine my thoughts more clearly than I can when I keep them contained in my own mind.

أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً، عايشت الانتفاضة الثانية، ولكنني لا أذكر منها غير صورة محمد الدرة، ومشهد اقتحام شارون وجنوده للمسجد الأقصى، عشت الانتفاضة الثانية وأذكر القصة التي كانت ترويها أمي عن قتل الاحتلال للطفلة الرضيعة إيمان في غزة. وأتذكر أن أمي صرخت على جندي الاحتلال مرة وقالت أن أخي الصغير الذي كان عمره سنة أو ربما ثلاث سيكون جنداً مجنداً، أتذكر توعدها لهم، وخوفي عليها، كنت صغيرة جداً أخاف، وما زلت أخاف، إلا أن خوفي تشبع بمشاعر أخرى كالغضب، والحقد، والأمل، والحلم.

أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً، وأتذكر حرق الأطفال وتيتيمهم، أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً وأتذكر مهند الحلبي، وبهاء عليان، وباسل الأعرج. أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً وأتذكر تصريح الحشرة محمود عباس عن لا أحقيته في صفد. أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً وأتذكر الحرب على العراق، وإعدام صدام، واغتيال ياسين والرنتيسي، أتذكر بن لادن، وموت القذافي، وثورة يناير، والثورة في تونس، ومجزرة رابعة، وحمزة الذي قطعت أعضاؤه التناسلية خلال الصورة السورية، أتذكر الخطابات الانهزامية، وأتذكر بكاء فتيات الجبهة عندما لم تفز الكلتة الإسلامية في انتخابات مجلس الطلبة عام 2017 في جامعة النجاح الوطنية.

أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً، اغتالت السلطة الحقيرة بنات. لم ينقض على دفنه يوم واحد، ابنته قبس خرجت إلى رام الله، حملت كاميرا والدها، ولكن السلطة الاحتلالية قمعت مظاهرة أمام أعين هذه الطفلة، هذه المظاهرة التي أشعلت باغتيال والداها. يردد الفلسطينيون: " الشعب يريد إسقاط النظام" ويهتفون: "اللي بقتل شعبو خاين.. مين يكون كاين".

أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً وما زال الاحتلال موجوداً إلا أنه مهزوز، قد لا أعيش لرؤية فلسطين حرة، إلا أنني رأيت هتافاً ضد نظام فاسد طاغٍ. أبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً، ما زلت أتذكر جزءاً من الرواية الفلسطينية، ومازال الاحتلال سيهدم بيوتاً في حي البستان.

being a girl and hitting puberty is so traumatic. you go from being a genderless little free thing to being hit with shaving and makeup and growing breasts and skincare and menstruation and suddenly being sexualised when like a few years ago you could take your shirt off to play in the stream and trade yugioh cards with the boys and come home covered in mud and not even think about it. and then you spend years hating being a girl and hating everything puberty did to you and wishing you could be a boy or be completely genderless again and it takes you Many years to come to terms with yourself Or you simply try to Lean In to everything and do makeup tutorials on YouTube and claim it’s for fun. like how can this be treated as normal
