People have been tagging my work with stuff like '#op how the hell did you manage to translate the exact feeling of a brain freeze to a facial expression' and '#also how do you do expressions so well?' and '#the facial expressions are so good' and...

First off: Oh my god thank you guys so much. Again, it means so much to me when you notice.

Secondly: I can do it because I make it a point to study the hell out of facial expressions. I always have. Above is a link to a really fascinating article, and this is the kind of stuff I've spent a lot of time reading and incorporating into my art.

I think it also has a lot to do with the kind of stuff I watched as a kid.

I started really getting into drawing when I was about 5, and I would spend hours watching my favorite cartoons and trying to match the same energy as them in my drawings.

I grew up watching stuff like the original Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry and the Disney Renaissance Age movies. The original Genie is basically a masterclass on cartoon expressions all by himself, and back in the day, I spent a LOT of time trying to draw him.

I also take a ton of comedy inspiration from Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is one of my favorite movies of all time - this scene has some of the best expressions) and Laurel & Hardy.

Weird Al's music videos are also great to study. (Medic fans, you're gonna love this one. Just imagine.)

I do take inspiration from newer stuff, of course; particularly Dreamworks. The Dreamworks Face is EVERYWHERE in my stuff, and I am not ashamed of it. Now, I respect the hell out of the author of Lackadaisy - she could easily out-draw me anyday, but I will still fistfight her on this matter if I have to! I just ... I have a weakness for the smarm brow, I can't help it!

When it comes to the newer stuff, I would say that Dracula of Hotel Transylvania is probably my favorite study. I ADORE how expressive they made that character, and I could probably spend days analyzing him frame-by-frame.

And in-depth analysis and practice is really what it took to get to this point. I've just spent a lot of time looking at expressions, thinking about what that expression is trying to convey, and practicing feeling the emotion in an image myself.

When I'm in a really strong hyperfocus with Blender or SFM, I actually catch myself watching other peoples' expressions and thinking 'okay, what sliders would I be adjusting to replicate that?' I even think about it when I feel the muscles in my own face moving.

Long story short, the reason I can do expressions so well is because I'm completely obsessed with them. They are my favorite part of creating a piece of art. That's why my stuff involves so many closeups.

... Oh and this might have something to do with it too.

I have literally spent thousands of hours working with expressions. The vast majority of that time was spent working with the Medic model.

Yeah. This ain't my first rodeo. This recent thing with Blender is just my Medic Hyperfocus... Phase Two.
