Do some people not write fanfic because they love a character or a series so much that they wish to partake in the fun of it? What do you mean, my fanfiction needs to be creative in this specific way, and should be this innovative, and also be wildly different from everything else out there? Does comparison matter that much?

Should my goal be that? To create something that makes me and my work stand out as "superior" by some arbitrary criteria people have set up? That changes every six months? Should my goal not be to put my love for the medium and its vessels into words and share it with others? To explore their relationships, their thoughts, their environments? To try new things for myself and see where that leads me?
