no way home spoilers
That look in Tobey's eyes when he's holding Tom's Peter back from killing Norman. He didn't have to say a single word. They both just knew. That look is haunting me it won't leave my mind.
It was so, so important how they did that moment - how Tobey didn't just snatch the hoverboard out of Tom's hands with a web - but rather he could look him in the eyes, look his younger self in the eyes, and stop him from making the same choice that he did. Not just physically stop him but to make him understand, and let him make the choice to let go himself, instead of making it for him.
I love how they really framed Tobey's as the oldest and the wisest. He's had all this time to look back on that choice he made. All this time to think about the things he would have done differently. All this time thinking if he had just known, wishing he could just go back in time and talk to himself, to stop himself. He never thought that one day he would actually get that chance.
That look. That look that won't leave my mind. That look that said you know you shouldn't do this. You know May wouldn't want you to do this. I know the pain it will cause you. I've felt it. I feel it every day. I don't want you to go through what I did. I don't want you to make the same mistake I did. I don't want you to feel the pain that I do. Please. I love you. Please. It didn't help.
And Tom's Peter listens. He makes the choice Tobey's couldn't. His younger self didn't have him to offer him his strength and compassion and wisdom and perspective. Tobey's Peter can never go back in time and save himself, but at least he could save this version of himself. He can go on living, and the pain will fade more and more every day. Whenever he looks back on his younger self at least he'll know, without a doubt, that in another world, there's a version of him that he was able to help. Who didn't make that choice.
(And then Tom's Peter could then do something else that Tobey's couldn't, that being curing Norman, which he said he's been thinking about for years. Even though he was dead he still wished he could go back and help him, and now he was finally able to give him a second chance.)
(And the fact that Tobey says in the very next scene after May dies that ever since he got here he's been trying to find Peter because he feels he needs his help. I know he probably got there earlier but part of me thinks he got there right after or when May died, and he goes through the portal a few hours later. Yes Peter needed him because of the villains but the real reason he needed him was because of May's death and how he was grieving - and how this universe's Peter was going to make the same decision he did if he didn't find him and help him.)
And Andrew. I saw someone else say that he's still grieving Gwen, which is so true. From his conversation with Tobey it sounds like he really just sunk himself entirely into his work as Spiderman in order to, maybe not so much cope but just keep himself occupied to block out the grief.
He thinks about her every day. Sees her falling. Feels the weight of her in his arms again and again and again.
And when MJ fell, every fiber of his being was screaming not again. Not again. Not again.
In that moment, he just saw Gwen. Like he does every day. Only this time it was all too real.
And this time it was different. MJ's Peter couldn't get to her, just like he couldn't get to Gwen. This time he was here. This time he could do something about it. This time there was someone who could spare Peter the pain he lives with every moment of his life.
Maybe when he caught her, for just a split second, it felt like he caught Gwen. He had relived the most horrible moment of his life again. That moment that lived in his mind, that was always there underneath everything else, burning just a little but without end. Then somehow, this time, it ended differently.
The worst thing that happened to Andrew's Peter was a tragedy, but the worst thing that happened to Tobey's was a choice. They're both things that they can never change, but wish they could. They're both things they were able to spare this young version of themselves from. This boy who's full of so much potential and been through so much already. This boy who needed them. This boy who is them.
Obviously this whole movie was about second chances and compassion. You can always give second chances to people, no matter what they've done. You can always start over with them. Everyone except for yourself. You will always know what you've been through and what you've done. And you can be compassionate with yourself, but you can never truly start over. We can never get second chances in life - we can only have them in the eyes of others.
I wish I could go back in time and be there for my younger self. I wish I could help them and guide them. I wish I could protect them. I wish I could save them. I think about it all the time. I think a lot of us do. But in the real world we can't save our younger selves from pain.
Tobey and Andrew were able to fulfill the impossible dream of giving yourself a second chance. Of saving yourself.
I think what this movie was saying was that, as much as we wish we could, we can't start over. You can't give second chances to yourself so that's why it's all the more important that you give them to others - because if we could give ourselves even one moment of the past that could be changed, we would all do it in a heartbeat.

Warning: Encanto spoilers Ok I just realized something.  At the end when Bruno is explaining himself to Pepa, and he sings "Let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it go"... I think we know that's an obvious Frozen reference, but it just occurred to me that Disney isn't just self-referencing for fun here.  It's a deliberate reference to another character whose emotions affect the weather. At the wedding, Bruno could tell that Pepa, like Elsa, was trying really hard to keep her feelings in so everyone could have a nice sunny day.  When he said it looks like rain, he was trying to say that he sees her, and that it's ok to admit she was stressed.  He wanted her to learn the same thing Elsa was learning -- that it's ok to express herself, and that if we have to deal with some messy weather, so be it. Bruno must have wanted to teach the family the same thing Mirabel ended up teaching them -- to be who they are and accept their own imperfections.  But he didn't know how to communicate it well, and back then the family wasn't ready to learn it yet. And that means Pepa's blaming of Bruno was really just a mask for her fear of herself.  She was scared of her own emotions and the power they could have.  Bruno was trying to say, hey your emotions don't scare me, just go ahead and feel them!  But since that was contrary to the general family attitude, Pepa didn't know how to receive that kind of affirmation.

^ditto. This series is so good!!
The Books of Beginning
Okay, so I just finished re-reading the Books of Beginning; a middle-grade fantasy trilogy by John Stephens and it’s just SO. FREAKING. GOOD. But, like, NO ONE knows about it & it makes me so sad.
So, if you like fantasy middle-grade stories, here’s my reasons why I think you should read it:
1. It’s familiar, but unique
The story takes inspiration from a lot of elements of other fantasy stories; the main characters are three siblings who stumble across magic, there are some magical creatures that every fantasy lover knows and loves. And I love this! These are all things I love and by using some elements of a familiar storyline we are more easily immersed in the world. But, Stephens puts a completely unique spin on it! It’s like you’re reading something completely new and it’s intriguing and you don’t know what’s going to happen next! Although the initial premise is familiar, as the book continues and the series continues, it constantly surprises you! It’s amazing, the plot is BRILLIANT, it flows so smoothly & its always exciting! it’s just…….awesome.
2. The ~magic~
So, literally everything about the magic in this is amazing. How our characters CHOOSE to USE magic is SO integral to the plot. Like, I’m not joking. There would be no story without it. Or, the story would be completely different. And this magic also allows for insane character development. It’s awesome.
One type of magic they use is time travel. Now, I’m a sucker for time travel. I love it. So much. I love the problems it causes & how the characters have to find solutions, & I love how complex and interesting it can be. But, a lot of the time it is not executed well & I’m left disappointed with how the author used it (*cough cough The Cursed Child *cough*). However, THIS series does it SO WELL. It blew me away. It is the best time travel I have ever read about. I can not effectively describe how amazing it is. Unlike The Cursed Child for example, it actually has a purpose to the overall story. Most of the time, it is used as a solution to a problem, but obviously still having consequences or plot points that come up later in an incredible way. It is complex but is easy to understand as well. And, I don’t think, there are any plot holes or loop holes that one can generally expect to find with time travel. The first time I read the first book, everything about how time travel was used blew my mind. It. Is. Amazing.
3. Sibling dynamic
Arguably, the most outstanding thing about this series is the three main characters Kate, Michael & Emma, their relationship with each other, and the dynamics of their little group.
Let me say, this series has the best sibling dynamic out of any books I’ve read about a family. The Series of Unfortunate Events, for example, fantastic series! The Narnia Chronicles; one of my fave series of all time! But I think, in this particular aspect, they lack what the Books of Beginning series has; an interesting, complex sibling dynamic that CHANGES and GROWS. These three children go through a lot and so of course how they interact with each other, how they as a group come up with and agree to ideas, solutions and decisions, will change. With kids, the eldest usually always has the final say, right? But after new obstacles and situations, will that change? The pure love and loyalty that they all have for each other also really captures your heart.
The three siblings, as well as every other major character that we meet, has personality, motivations and vulnerabilities & this makes the interactions they have with each other all the more important, interesting and real. And, for me anyway, makes you care about them and will leave you sobbing at the end (yeah, I’m still not over a certain characters death lol)
4. And THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. It’s beautiful :’)
Anyway, so I only just finished re-reading this series so that’s probably why this post is very passionate haha but these books, these characters are awesome & there are many more reasons why I love this series but 1. I would be typing forever & this post will be a million miles long & 2. It would just go into spoiler territory haha
So, if you like the sound of any of this, I would then highly recommend this series 😊

Thank you one direction for celebrating with us your ANNIVERSARY!
Ahh i came up with this concept like 6 months ago, I used this word as a timeline, a way of us seeing them grow up through their different eras, sometimes I forget that all of this happened in 5 years.
Happy anniversary one direction, thank you for the teenage trauma and the gay songs 🤍

You know what, I can’t just scroll past this because I disagree. Black Widow was a badass from start to finish and her new movie is no different. I’d argue that she was not “passed around as a love interest to whichever of her male counterparts needed character development” because she was far beyond going so low as to date her colleagues. Natasha was human despite spending her entire childhood being psychologically reprogrammed as a trained assassin. She took the darkest part of her life—darker than most people’s deepest nightmares—and kept only those that made her stronger and gooder. I’m aware that gooder is not a word but I use it instead of better because it’s about Nat’s heart. She only kept the parts of her past that did not obliterate her humanity. It is definitely long overdue, but it is not too late to learn about what terribly horrifying past shaped the strong, fierce, badass, fearless, human, woman that we know today. Natasha may have been a trained assassin but any girl should be proud to call her her hero because she took the worst situation a girl can be in and use it to find good in the world and fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Natasha Romanoff is a hero if ever there has been one.
black widow: 3 stars
black widow meant a lot to me growing up, purely because of the fact that she was the only superhero in the mcu that was a woman. then i grew to dislike her because her only purpose in those films seemed to be being passed around as a love interest to whichever of her male counterparts needed character development. for me, this film is just too late. it was a decent marvel movie and florence pugh did an incredible job, but it was just too late.

Luka x Alberto
Disclaimer: This is the first thing I have ever written like this so 🤷🏼‍♀️ I hope it’s good.
Description: As Luka is winding down the school year, he starts to think about Alberto and maybe friendship isn’t enough for him. Absolute fluff
As Luka and Alberto got older, they didn’t get any further apart. Every summer when Giulia and Luka returned, there was hardly a minute that you wouldn’t see one boy without the other. But as the years progress, both boys began to wonder if their friendship could be something more.
One slow spring day at school, Luke crossed another day off his calendar that counted down to summer vacation and his return trip to his best friend. Ahh Alberto. What a friend he had been to Luka. He sighed happily as he remembered all their fun adventures since he’d made his first change. Alberto had always been there for him.
His thoughts wandered further down this path and he thought about what his life would have been like without this one-of-a-kind boy in it. Dark was the only way to describe it. In a quite literal sense, he had been running away from a very dark future with his uncle when he’d met Alberto. Saving him from the deep, Alberto had given Luka an opportunity to hope just when it seemed he’d had no options left. He shivered away from the thought of what his home would have been, deep in the dark ocean with his strange, translucent, uncle.
Trying to think of a happier topic, Luka changed his direction and thought about his and Alberto’s plans for the summer. When he was first going to school, Luka had written Alberto at least every week, if not, everyday. But his workload got heavier as the years progressed and lately, Luka would only write once or twice a month. Alberto was busy too, helping Massimo out with the fish so he only wrote back when he had the extra time. The few letters they did get to each other were filled with plans for the summer. From promising each other that they were finally going to fix up that old bike to teaching each other all the new things they had learned over the last 9 months apart, Luka had a good time getting lost in daydreams of these plans. What would it have been like without him? Meant to bring with it gratitude for his friend, this intrusive thought suddenly turned dark again. What would it have been like without him?
Other than school, Luka could hardly remember a time before Alberto and even then, he spent plenty of time at school thinking about all the new things he had to tell Alberto. If he had somehow escaped going to the deep without Alberto, Luka tried to imagine what his life would have been like without his best friend. It was still dark. Luka loved his family and he loved his friend Giulia, but he just couldn’t talk to them the way he talked to Alberto. No one listened like he did. He was never afraid of what Luka might say. Alberto was fearless and caring. He’d never hurt Luka just like Luka would never hurt him. They always faced each other’s problems head on, together. Together. When he thought the word, he felt something in his stomach. He wasn’t sure how to describe it. What was that word Giulia always said when she talked about some cute girl she was about to develop a crush on? Farfalle—butterflies. Luka was surprised at how sweet the unfamiliar feeling was. Together, he thought again but nothing happened.
He tried to remember what he had been thinking just a moment ago when the butterflies had surfaced. He’d been thinking about how he never really did anything without Alberto. They were always together. There it was again! The butterflies fluttered frantically and Luka’s always red cheeks got redder. It was such a sweet and happy feeling and he wanted to keep it but he still wasn’t entirely sure how it worked. Hmm, he’d have to talk to Alberto about it when he got home.
