I said it in my video, but I’ll say it here to: you can’t combine two book series that fundamentally have differing opinions on what ambition means, who is allowed to have it, and how far you’ll go to get it.

I think another thing that already bums me out about the Shadow and Bone Netflix production is how...British Fantasy it feels. Like the Grishaverse, despite the flaws and shallowness of a lot of its Russian aesthetics is still very Russian.

Do I think I could make a better version of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone? Yes. Why do I think this? I would add Rasputin by Boney M. into the soundtrack unironically.

yeah the thing about king arthur stuff is how the stories are so impossibly old that they gain a time-weird self-consciousness where it almost seems not only like everything is destined to happen the way it happens but like the characters are self-aware that they are people in a story. like when the four women kidnap lancelot and they say “we know you’re lancelot and you’re never going to love any woman but guinevere but you have to pick one of us anyway.” it’s like in the iliad when we see helen weaving a tapestry about herself, or achilles singing about the deeds of heroes before him, or when achilles almost dies in like book four or something and we see an exchange between two gods that’s like no wait he can’t die now he has to die later when he’s returning hektor’s body after he kills him as revenge for killing patroklos. the awareness that the audience knows what’s going to happen and the characters do too is part of what tragedy is! very cool

God, I haven't read Deathless in a while (it made me too crazy!), but now that you mentioned the thing about the self-awareness of the characters... I need to go back there and SUFFER
