Lessons from Narnia to take into the new year:

Frank: Be loyal; to your beliefs, to your values, and to your loved ones. Cling to your beliefs in the dark, and never leave behind the ones you love. Helen: Speak for the good of others. Be brave for those who can’t, and be faithful to those who need you. Digory: Logic and reason do not equal cynicism. Be clever, be open, and have faith. Polly: Don’t be afraid of looking like a fool. Say what you’re thinking and ask questions when you need to. Peter: Don’t let your fears hold you back from what you need to do. You don’t need to feel brave to act bravely.  Susan: Let yourself be gentle. Be considerate of others; be compassionate. There is strength in gentleness, too, even when others don’t see it. Edmund: Even a traitor may mend: you are not defined by your past mistakes. Forgive yourself, for you have been forgiven. Lucy: Know when to follow, and know when to go on alone. You might not share the world’s values, and it’s important to know when you’re following the wrong thing. Stick to your convictions. Don’t be afraid if you’re the only one. Eustace: Change doesn’t happen all at once. Just because you still fall short doesn’t mean the cure hasn’t begun.  Jill: Don’t be afraid to cry. Your feelings are important, and you are allowed to express them.  Shasta/Cor: When you are at your highest, stay humble. You are no better at your most fortunate than you were when you felt unfortunate.  Aravis: Be true to yourself, and then find the strength to grow. Forget your pride, but never forget you are worthy of love and respect. Corin: Stand up for what matters to you. Stand up for others. Never let your failures stop you from trying again. Bree: Never stop chasing what you want; never stop working to be where you want to be. Keep taking steps towards your goals, and walk with those who share them. Hwin: Give hope to the hopeless. Be there for those who have no one, and stand by them on their journey. Caspian: Don’t give up. Help will come, you’ll make it through, and you will reach your dreams. It’s never too late. Trufflehunter: Know when to hold on. Change is not always progress, and some things are worth staying true to. Sometimes it is good to stay the same. Reepicheep: Be firm in your convictions, and be true to yourself. Go where you are called, even when everyone else turns back.  Puddleglum: Believe when it is hardest to. In the dark, still believe in the sun. Some things are more important than your present circumstances, anyways. Rilian: Be devoted; to those you love, and to what you believe in.  Tirian: Stand firm, even in the darkest hour, and never stop fighting for a better tomorrow. Give everything for what matters to you. Know that it’s worth the fight.

little folklore things

in some english folklore there is a belief that the first soul buried in a new burying ground will be tasked to haunt the cemetery forever helping souls move on to heaven and help them to avoid the devil and witches, to avoid this fate there is some customs of burying a dog or some other animal in a new cemetery, it is called a church grim, and unlike other black dogs, which are often harbingers of death, it is a benevolent spirit meanwhile in scottish folklore there is the belief that a person will haunt a cemetery until another is buried there to take their place and so on

in breton folklore it’s believed that if you find yourself on the sea on halloween or all soul’s day that the spirits of the dead lost at sea will try and call your name  to get you to carry them back to land so they can be put to rest properly

among the numerous beliefs of the origins of the selkies, one in shetland and orcadian tradtion is that selkies are the souls of drowned sailors who can return to human form once a year to visit their families

it is believed that the seventh son of a seventh son (or seventh daughter of a seventh daughter) who has red hair will be born with the sight to see the fairies

it is believed unwise to wear too much green as it is a fairy colour and might attract them to you

August 21st is Fanfic Writer’s Appreciation Day  💕

Let’s be honest - we all forget to leave a comment sometimes. We don’t always go out of our way to click the “come talk to me on tumblr” link on AO3 to scream about the fic in the author’s inbox. On August 21st I encourage you to take a moment and show fanfic writers that you appreciate them!

How can you do it?

leave a comment and kudos on every fic you finish reading. Doesn’t matter how short. Doesn’t matter if you’re just repeating what other people have already said. Just be kind! Keysmashing, Caps Lock, and live commenting appreciated! (Bonus points if you leave a comment on every chapter)

ideas for what to put in a comment: one | two

floaty review box for ao3 (super useful for commenting as you read + it has a ‘review tips’ button if you feel stuck)

reblog ficlets, drabbles, fics, fic rec posts, etc. Put a nice comment in the tags. Remember that likes, while appreciated, don’t give the writer any exposure, meaning the posts don’t reach more people

go to your local fanfic writer’s inbox and talk to them about their fic of your choice. Let them know how long ago you’ve read it and what story point/sentence/scene still makes you smile when you think about it

send thank you messages to fic writers. In a world where you have to pay for almost everything, they’re supplying you with countless hours of free entertainment. It can get quite lonely without getting messages acknowledging the hours they spend writing stories - let them know their time and effort is appreciated

make fic rec posts and @ the authors whose fics you’re recommending! (believe me, fic writers love to see their stories in these posts)

create something inspired by a fic! You can draw fanart, make a moodboard or aesthetic post, or even write a song for the fic you love. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro doesn’t matter - the thought alone is what counts more than anything <3

buy the writer a coffee if they have a ko-fi page and you have some change lying around c: Caffeine keeps most fic writers awake when they struggle with a particularly slow draft or a difficult scene. More coffee, more content.

These are only some ideas out of the sea of possible ways to appreciate fanfic writers. On August 21st show the writers in your fandom(s) some love <3
