The Writing Journey
Writing has always been an escape for me. I’ve been writing off and on since I was eleven years old, and I’ve always found writing to be an outlet for emotions I was having trouble with. Most of my writing was aimless. When I found journaling I thought that was it for me. Then I found fanfiction. Fanfiction opened up new worlds for me to play in, to experience past episodes, films, and books. It…

Project Update: Editing, editing, editing...
I’m running through edits for Rudderless once again. It has been a little while since I worked on this novella, as I like to have fresh eyes while completing another pass of edits, but I am just as excited about this story as I was the first time through. Hopefully only another pass after this one and it will be ready for people to enjoy. My other projects are being written, slowly, but…

Book Review: A Place For Us
A Place For Us is a beautiful memoir written by Brandon Wolf, a survivor of the tragedy that was the shooting at Pulse NightClub in Orlando in 2016. While it was a shorter book (just over 200 pages), the intensity of the memories slowed down my reading. That is not to say, however, that I regret picking this book up–I laughed, I cried, I felt like giving Brandon a big bear hug and never letting…

Book Review: Red, White & Royal Blue
Red, White & Royal Blue To say that I enjoyed Red, White & Royal Blue is a bit of an understatement. I devoured the book in one day (I usually try to savor my reads), and couldn’t be pulled away even by meals or my cats begging for attention. The writing was exciting, yet thoughtful, and every scene had its place. The characters were three dimensional, even the more minor ones like Luna. Not…

Book Review: Nettle & Bone
T. Kingfisher once again stunned me with the visceral storytelling, amazing characters, and effective worldbuilding in this novella. Every word is crafted perfectly in this story, leaving a bittersweet aftertaste. [SPOILERS MAY BE PRESENT] Being the youngest of three growing up and not feeling as though I fit with the rest of the world (thank you autism), this story hit close to home for me.…

Back It Up
I recently had a technological issue as one of my flashdrives became corrupted. I had a bit of a panic while I retrieved what files I could, and lucked out when I retrieved all of the files I needed. However, it brings up a good topic: backing up your writing projects. Some people write exclusively on Google Docs, but that does require an internet connection. Other back up spots online include…

Restructuring a Novel
What happens when you have a novel halfway written and you realize you need to do a major restructure to make it work? Sometimes when you start a story you don’t have all of the pieces, all of the details, that come together at the end. You have the main ideas, the plot, the events sorted out, but you haven’t planned for room around those. With Murder as a Verb I’m going through exactly…

How did NaNo as a Disabled Grad Student go?
How did NaNo as a Disabled Grad Student go?
I began a new series this year, taking a slight break from writing in the Kostr series. The Better Off Dead series is a much different shade (if you will) of magic–magical realism tinged with horror. This series is not intended for young adult or children. That being said, it was great to have a change of pace and remind myself of why I love the diversity of writing so much. Unfortunately,…

NaNoWriMo 2022 Project: Murder as a Verb
NaNoWriMo 2022 Project: Murder as a Verb
I, as always, will be participating in NaNoWriMo 2022. I was flip-flopping on what project I wanted to work on, but I finally settled on the first book of a Horror/Supernatural series: Murder as a Verb. Hopefully soon I will have an excerpt for you all, but until that point I have other projects I’m working on. The Weeping Year is still going through edits, and Rudderless is being finished and…

Rudderless and more scribblings
Rudderless and more scribblings
Rudderless Cover art I’ve been quite busy since my last entry here, and wanted to catch everyone up. Outside of writing my health has steadily worsened, I began my graduate classes, and I’ve been busy applying for disability (which as many know, is a big deal and takes a lot of energy). My ability to write, while spotty during the semester, is still present. This past summer I worked hard on…

Book Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Book Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Vicious by V.E. Schwab Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars I started Vicious on the heels of finishing Gideon the Ninth by Tamryn Muir, and since I had loved A Darker Shade of Magic I expected to fall in love with Vicious as well. Vicious did not disappoint. While I got major If We Were Villains vibes (friends turned enemies, monsters underneath) mixed in with Steelheart themes (dark superheroes),…

Writing Resources: Health and Lack Thereof
Writing Resources: Health and Lack Thereof
Health, Healthcare, and Illness are a hot topic in the world lately–and it’s pretty typical for writers to want to add some sort of trauma to their works of fiction: mental or physical (and sometimes both!). If you aren’t well-versed in the Healthcare systems around the world or have never been in a situation where you needed or learned the terms, treatments, and first aid, then you will need…
