“I do not wish you much happiness — it would bore you; I do not wish you trouble either; but, following the people’s philosophy, I will simply repeat: ‘Live more’ and try somehow not to be too bored…”

People don't want their lives fixed. Nobody wants their problems solved. Their dramas. Their distractions. Their stories resolved. Their messed cleaned up. Because what would they have left? Just the big scary unknown.

It never occurred to me how much went into a person.
I had lost Elizabeth even as I’d retained her. It wasn’t her body that I missed... I didn’t not miss her body—I longed for the peculiar ways Elizabeth carried her body, for the feeling of looking up to see her across the room, knowing she was separate but with me. I missed her mind, her winks and sly jokes, the way she crumpled over her desk in exhaustion after a long day of writing, how I would come to her, curl her upright, and kiss her on the forehead and tell her I loved her. I missed the rare tanginess under her arms after a run. I missed how her eyes grew moony when we imagined the future together, a house in the woods with walls full of books and a dining room where we hosted friends every weekend. It never occurred to me how much went into a person.
— Isle McElroy, People Collide: A Novel (HarperCollins, September 26, 2023)
