I guess it’s a nice opportunity to take a look back at all the Inside No. 9 studies I painted so far on this 9th of April. They’re all very different in style… Quite on-brand with the series itself, no? It’s really very lucky for me to encounter a subject that fits the manner I like to do studies (i.e. in as many different styles as possible) so perfectly. I’m also very humbled by how the creators seem to appreciate them.

I told Reece a while ago that I plan to do 9 of these. It would be uncouth to not stick to these words. So, more to come in the future, definitely!

how did you make that cute little mouth? :-D is the strip of fabric 1 long one from forehead to chin that's folded where the mouth is? the rounded bottom is so cute

Hi, hello! Yeah, it's a mix of folding and the scrunch™

I started doing faces like this waaay back on my first mandrake - Tommy Tubtuft, up there - because I wasn't confident at all about the way my stitches looked. I really wanted to do half circles for eyelids (like my goblins have now) but felt my stitches just weren't clean enough to pull it off.

Hilariously this has resulted in some very expressive faces over the years, so I guess it worked out!
