In January, I set out to use every hoop I had before I made my next Etsy shop update (or bought any more hoops!) I was interested in doing collections of related works, embroideries that had something in common. Instead of selling them off as I made them, I let myself be an artist for a little while and arrange little gallery walls in my bedroom/studio. In four months, I’ve made nineteen pieces of embroidery art that I’ve grouped roughly into two collections. All but two of the first nine use fabrics from the “A Little Rain” collection by Robert Kauffman Fabrics (I liked the tininess of some of the prints and the watercolor effects and soft colors in the others). These pieces all have light backgrounds and weird pictures. I’m not sure how else to describe the commonality of them. Maybe, “something is very wrong here but even so, your eyes enjoy what they’re looking at”.  Two of the pieces were inspired by horror media. The cherry tree man in the center was inspired by one of the more memorable murder tableaux in NBC’s Hannibal. Next to it is an interpretation of Dani’s flower cape from the end of Midsommar (2019). Beauty is terror, and all that good stuff.

“Madame Janvier” by @stephenmackey_artist via @alexblackriver. So moody, dark and lovely. I’m really enjoying the embodiment of nature and growth in this exquisite oil on board painting. posted on Instagram - https://instagr.am/p/COHFzJpLX_3/

You’re going to a very dangerous place, so be careful. The thing that slumbers there, it’s not human. You will see a sumptuous banquet, but don’t eat or drink anything. Your life depends on it.

do you have any advice for someone to move from cross stitching with patterns to free hand embroidery? i want to give it a go, but i don’t think I’m very artistic to just not follow a pattern
Hi there! Hopefully I can share some helpful insights - I started cross stitch and then branched out into embroidery myself so I can relate to the dauntingness of freehand work!
A large part of my journey was realising that I didn’t have to be super artistic, and that if I didn’t like what I stitched, I could just pick the stitches out! It helped me to stop being such a perfectionist (sort of! 😅)
So generally there’s two ways i approach freehand work - I’ll describe it and try and add some pictures to help & hopefully it will be useful ☺️
So if I have a clear idea - e.g. I want to stitch a flower bouquet 💐 I look at actual bouquets and the layers involved and try to stitch out a vague shape
Tumblr media
So you can see there’s some stems and a vague idea of width? And then I’ll use different stitches to add some details
Tumblr media
And I layer stitches until I feel it’s full enough (or I just get bored of it 😅)
Tumblr media
Another thing I’ve found really helpful is to have a hoop that isn’t a ‘piece’ as such, but just a place to practice different stitches and see what you like stitching or if it looks good
Tumblr media
But there are also times where I have a both vague and specific idea - so at the moment I’m working on another under the sea 🌊 inspired hoop - and I don’t have a ‘pattern’ strictly; but I do have some squiggles for the vague ideas I’m going for like this
Tumblr media
So in my head I know roughly what type of stitches I want and the overall composition and then I start gradually building the piece up like so
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another way to get used to free handing is to pick one stitch and fill a hoop with it - e.g French knots
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found this useful for just being a bit more free with stitch placements and seeing how the hoop filled up!
Ultimately, freehand work can be as creative as you want - you could use a pattern as a guide but not use the specific stitches or colours, or do little sketches on paper for what you want the end piece to look like, or you can just grab a hoop and fill it however you want!
Don’t let feelings of not being creative enough stop you and remember things can always be picked out - no stitch is permanent until you say it is!!
I hope this is helpful - I think a lot of the creative process is very individualised so my insights might not work for everyone, and there’s no inherent ‘right’ way to stitch - with or without a pattern , or with or without different stitches, it’s art and everyone finds something different to enjoy!! Happy stitching 🧵

first pic is a moleskine I embroidered to be part of my not-yet-gf’s christmas present. second is an original design inspired by a Discord conversation we had later, when I accused her of being a mushroom propagandist. she admitted to being in the pocket of Big Mushroom, “which is a literal giant that walks around while I ride in the pocket of its overalls.”
