Cyberbullying in 2021

It has become all too easy to harass others online. Whether it be Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, trolls are everywhere. Having an opinion on anything online will cause conflict, and because those that can comment aren’t face to face, they can be as cruel as they’d like. I feel that women especially are targeted. A woman’s appearance and what she chooses to devote herself to are immediately commented on. Too skinny? She needs a burger. Overweight? She needs a salad. Make up? She needs to embrace her natural self. No make up? She needs to put effort into her hygiene. Women feel that no matter what they do, they cannot win. Trolls are everywhere and targeting women to the point that their safety is at risk. We also see this with men, however, the comments they receive often degrades their masculinity, which also needs to be addressed - as a man’s worth isn’t in how masculine he is, just as a women’s isn’t in her appearance. The online community needs to respect each other.

A TikTok trend has started in the last week claiming April 24th as a very disturbing day. In response, many are warning others of the day in order to protect them - be careful and be sure to report anything promoting assault, even if it is a joke.
