In your opinion, which are the most ridiculous episodes of New Who?
Hello kind Anon
Oooh, the first episode that sprang to mind was the Christmas special: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe -S7
Tumblr media
It started off well, with the Eleventh Doctor meeting young Cyril but quickly slipped into "I wanna be in Narnia" territory; with boring aliens (who seemed to have escaped from their giant chessboard for the night), and a hugely sentimental ending with the figther pilot dad (I'm guessing Moffat was playing with his childhood fantasies of being an RAF WWII pilot with this one).
It was so awful, my eldest son (my official watch-buddy) got up and stormed out the room, refusing to see any more of it.
How awful was it? Let's just say that it didn't manage to match any of the war-based dramas we have watched over the years. A decent cast absolutely wasted.
The problem is that, generally after this, I lost all interest in watching Doctor Who. And I wasn't desperate to see it until the Twelfth Doctor appeared. Not that I was avid to watch S6, please note; and I often missed the beginning of episodes so had no idea what was going on.
Let me see what else I can think of.
I wasn't keen on "Fear Her" - S2. It was a mistake to force a child to carry that much of the acting; and the storyline would have fit The Sarah Jane Adventures a lot more. There's also the much hated episode "Love & Monsters" - S2. Again, an excellent cast give a dubious script (unless you like the idea of a man having a romantic relationship with a paving slab) some life. Blue Peter may have helped choose the design of the Abzorbaloff but it was RTD who came up with the story. BUT Elton's loss of his mother did make me cry in sympathy AND it introduced my sons to the music of ELO, so I can't hate it.
Another epidsode I won't rush to watch again is "It Takes You Away" - S11. Nothing wrong with the premise, but I found the pace a bit boring.
Although, looking through the list of episodes on Wikipedia, I must admit that it made me think that I ought to rewatch a lot of them, because I hardly remember anything that happened without a lot of mental prodding. For instance, I've still no idea why there were dinosurs on a spaceship, or how the Doctor survived the Pandorica purely because he did.
As you can tell, there's an awful lot of stuff I missed from the end of S5 up to the end of S7. So I'm going to end with the episode "The Name of the Doctor" - S7. It all just seemed so stupid; what with Clara becoming Supercompanion by jumping into the time stream, to become the Doctor's one-man-band-survival-motivation-trainer. I'll admit that this is the main reason why I liked Chibnall's 'Timeless Child' theory; because Clara begging the Time Lords to extend the Doctor's life would then mean f*ck all. Yes, I really hated that bit by the crack in the wall.
Was it Moffat's intention to turn Clara into a manic pixie fairy godmother? Because that's what we ended up with. As you can tell, I'm not a fan of this.
I suppose I should state at this point that I have seen many ridiculous storylines in Doctor Who over the past 60 years. The actors involved have, on the whole, been the best quality you can find. Most of the time it hasn't mattered about the cardboard scenery, the repeated running down the same corridor, the dodgy made-up science, or them finding yet another quarry. If the acting is watchable, I'll keep with it.
As you can tell, I just won't necessarily watch it again.

No wait, because I'm thinking about Fourteen's suit and the way the vest is all tight and he only bothers with one button and it just looks a little haphazard and ill-fitting. David Tenant is still skinny as a rake, they could have easily tailored a nice trim suit for him and it would be fabulous. But the doctor/whatever semi-sentient-but-separate essence of himself controls regeneration has given him his old face (AND an older version of it) and gives him clothes that are just slightly not right for him. Because he's not quite right. Because he is older. He needed to be him but the him who is also older and different and not quite fitting where he is supposed to anymore. The him that lets Donna see his need for her - that tells her he needs rest and happiness and home.

Highlights from Catherine Tate's Q&A Panel at Armageddon 2024 (NZ) :
Q: What's your favourite Doctor Who alien?
CT: The wonderful Ood!
Q: Who's your favourite Doctor? (Crowd gasps in anticipation)
CT: Well, I get asked this a lot, and obviously it's David (Tennant). I don't know what number he is, he keeps coming back. But definitely, David. Although, someone recently pointed out that I was technically the first ever female Doctor. So you know what? Me, I'm my favourite Doctor.
Q: What's a favourite memory of working with David Tennant on Doctor Who?
CT: The scene in 'Partners in Crime', the one with the Adipose, there's the scene where Donna and the Doctor see each other from across a room. But they're both behind glass and they have the whole mime scene with the windows. Well, I remember it was about 3am when we were filming that - - Russel really likes to film at night if the story is taking place at night - so it was 3am, and I said to the director 'Uh, right here it just says Donna Mimes' and he said 'Yeah do whatever'.
So that whole scene was ad-lib during shooting and David and I were so in sync with it, we did that first take and the director said cut and print!
Q: What was it like working with Bernard (Cribbins)?
CT: Oh, Bernard. God, I love him. He was so funny and talented. He always had stories and voices and sound effects. He loved making people laugh. But we had a gag where every single time I called him I'd say (Donna Voice) 'GRANDAD!'
He'd say, "Who is this?"
"It's Catherine."
"Catherine who?"
"Catherine Tate"
"Never heard of her."
We did this every time I called him and I loved it.
Q: Is there anything annoying about working with David Tennant?
CT: No, absolutely not. He's perfect. He's the best person to work with. I will say though, I was annoying him a lot. When we did the 60th Anniversary specials, our trailers looked exactly the same and I never knew where my trailer was. I'd walk into his all the time!
Sometimes I'd walk in and see his shoes in the trailer and instead of thinking 'Oops, wrong trailer', my brain went 'What's he gone and left his shoes in my trailer for?'
It got so bad, sometimes I'd walk up the stairs and from inside I'd hear 'NO.'
Q: If you could take any prop from set, what would you take?
CT: Ohhhh, I'd have very large pockets and see what I could fit. But mostly I think it'd be a sonic screwdriver. It's gotta be a sonic screwdriver, doesn't it? It's small and mobile... Easy to steal. Plus, it'd fetch a great price on Ebay!
Q: Best show you've ever worked on?
CT: The Office, they paid me tons of money.
Other Highlights:
As soon as she came out, she saw the stage had no steps to the audience, so she stayed on mic and went the long way round to go into the audience and interview people, trying to find who had traveled the furthest to be here. She was sorely disappointed everyone was just from Aotearoa 🤣
She did some of her characters for the audience: Lauren Cooper, Nan, and an "Oi Spaceman! You're not mating with me sunshine!" (Crowd went wild for that)

THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY WE DON'T SEND NEIL WHAT WE WANT TO SEE IN S3!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the Lucy Eaton's podcast Hear Me Out interview with Neil Gaiman :)❤
Neil Gaiman (talking about Oscar Wilde's Salome): "She's got the thing she wants, not in the way that she wants.
Lucy Eaton: Yes - which is ultimately a kiss.
Neil Gaiman: Which is ultimately a kiss and I... you know, it was a lesson that I learned many many years later when I was writing Good Omen Season 2 and fans would write these letters in going: 'I hope they're going to kiss.' And I'd see you know every fourth or fifth letter was, you know, 'Just tell us that... just make us happy. Because, Crowley and Aziraphale are they going to kiss in this season?' and there was a point where I started to go, 'You know, I can give you what you want, but you won't want it.'

Here's a compilation of every Jesus foreshadowing I could find so far in Good Omens s1 and s2. This also includes my notes on what these hints may be referencing to (based on the Book of Revelation as the source material we will be parodying for s3, plot hints about 668: Neighbor of the Beast that were dropped over the years, and finally the themes and motifs that had been established in s1 and s2.)
When put together, it's actually incredible how much his character had already been foreshadowed in the past two seasons.
