it was early. too early to be awake, but here you were standing in the kitchen in nothing but panties and an oversized t-shirt you probably stole from anthony. you woke up feeling hungry, and rushed out of bed as quiet as possible not to wake your handsome, sleeping husband. you decided on pancakes and made sure to turn your kitchen speaker down while you listen to music as you cooked.

anthony hated sleeping alone, so it didn’t take long for him to realize you weren’t in bed with him anymore. he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and slowly made his way to the kitchen. he stopped in the doorway, admiring your dorky dance moves as you sung to the song playing and flipped your pancakes. anthony cleared his throat, making his presence known and you jumped at the sound, turning around to face him.

“you scared me!” you put a hand on your chest, and anthony chuckled making his way closer to you. you went back facing the stove and he wrapped his arms around you from behind while burying his head into your neck, leaving small kisses behind. “well good morning to you too.”

tito hummed in response, tightening his arms around your waist and pulling you away from the stove.

“bub, i’m starving.” you tapped his arms, attempting to move back to where your pancakes waited for you. he stepped around you, turning off the stove and placing the pan on one of the cool burners and faced you again.

“dance with me.” he pleaded, pointing to the speaker in the kitchen and you felt the heat rise to your face. you recognized the song immediately, a warm feeling filling your body when you started to hear Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley. tito had a loving smile on his face as he held out his hands for you, which you quickly accepted falling into his embrace.

“this is nice.” you commented, a large grin covering your face as you slow danced with the man you loved in your shared kitchen.

“yes love, it was the first time we did it too, no?” tito smirked, remembering your first dance as a married couple as you continued swaying back and forth. ever since you were younger you’d wanted this song played at your wedding, it was your parents wedding song and it was often played around your home growing up.

“it was perfect, just like right now.” you whispered, but truthfully you felt any moment spent with anthony was perfect. you smiled up at him, standing on your tippy toes to press a chaste kiss to the corner of his lips before he could bring you in for a proper one.

4. how did your love for hockey start?

i started following the islanders about 5 years ago. i don’t have any special story - i’ve just always been into sports. they were the first team that i watched, and i’ve stuck with them ever since!

i’m born and raised in vegas, so my second team would be the golden knights. before them, i hadn’t been to any hockey games, so they made my in-person hockey experience become a reality!

7. if you could be friends with any player who would it be and why?

of course, i’d love to be friends with barzy! i think we are very similar personality wise, and i want to get to know the real him. not the one we see on the tv, but the day to day mat.

other than barz, i’d probably say tj oshie! his personality is so fun, and he has the cutest family ever.

9. have you ever seen an nhl game? if so who was it?

i have! i saw a golden knights game back in 2017 against the calgary flames, and most recently, i saw them play the sabres right before the world shut down. i’ve tried to go when they played the isles, but something always ended up happening with my schedule, whether i had to work or was out of town. next season (god willing), i’m going to catch a vegas vs. isles game!

that interview tonight was just a testament to mat’s character. sure, he can have a temper sometimes and can be mouthy. but he has the biggest heart and it showed. he leaves it all out on the ice every damn game. he didn’t talk about how the loss felt to him - he communicated his guilt and regret for his teammates. he has such a huge heart for people and wants to give them what they deserve. THAT is the mat barzal that i know and love.
