I've only just started ep3 but dickie is just...not dickie. in the 1999 one you totally get why everyone gets swept up by him, why tom does. in the 2024 one he is So boring so far. the age-up doesn't help, but I think it'd still have been possible to have an older dickie that oozes charm and life. why anyone would want to spend time with this one, or be this one, is beyond me.
on the whole so far the whole thing feels very...student project?
part of me does think what's the point of filming in italy without the colour. and then if you're doing it black and white, what's the point if you're going to keep the camera quality so crisp. it all looks like a digital photo with a digital filter, and the balance leaning too white. if you want it noir, make it noir; but they haven't!
I hate to say it but none of the acting is hitting either. and the directing/acting feels very stage play, which is fine I guess? but feels very stunted. and like I'm watching people film something. hit their marks, say a line, walk off, walk across frame, get their cue. rather than feeling like I'm inside a story.
I'm willing to keep watching and hopefully be swayed a little. but sadly it's really disappointing me so far :/
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!! i really don't like the age-up, and you're so right about dickie feeling less charming and more reserved (i miss jude law 💔💔💔). in fact, most of the characters feel way more reserved. IT'S AN INTENSE STORY!!!! THEY'RE ALL HAVING INTENSE EMOTIONS!!!!
i ESPECIALLY need that big emotion to make up for the lack or color. it just feels so flat. im sure the duller acting was a director choice rather than the actors themselves falling short.
i didn't feel connected to the story at all like i did with both the book and the 1999 minghella adaptation. i really think it had potential with how faithful it was to the book, i just need MORE. more action, color, emotion, etc!!

JUDE LAW as Dickie Greenleaf

i feel what your previous anon about johnny so much! i think johnny's age up/characterization was more jarring to me than anything else tbh! he was so boring! aside from being rich he literally had no personality.
i'm in the minority in that i didn't love the minghella adaptation, mainly due to deviations from the source material -- that completely made up ending was awful, pleeeeease! -- and matt damon is a great actor but not at all tom ripley to me. i understand why people make comparisons though i wish they would try harder not to. but with all of that said, this dickie was just not it.
i totally agree with what you're saying about dickie/johnny. im sure he's a great actor i just don't like the way the director altered the character. he falls flat!!
i do understand what you're saying about the minghella adaptation, it's not for everyone. i personally love it despite its not being faithful to the book. minghella altered quite a few of the characters and their personalities as well as the plot, but he did it in a way that still made them interesting to me, so i didn't mind.
to me, an adaptation can be great as long as it can hold its own, whether it's identical to the source material or just loosely based on it. thats part of the reason why i was disappointed with the 2024 ripley, it just kinda flopped in alot of ways. it wasn't exciting or intriguing! it's not a show i would've chosen to watch if not for my love of the book series, yk?

wait have you seen purple noon? it's a french adaptation of talented mr ripley which is kind of insane but beautifully filmed! i don't remember it being super faithful to the book but it is definitely worth a watch!
YESSS i haven't seen it but i was planning on watching it in the next week or so as well as some other ripley book adaptations 😻😻

i've watched 6 episodes and some are better than others. it took me a minute to get used to the slower pace -- i usually binge watch shorter shows and don't really take breaks in between but i can't do that with this show. it demands time. there are some scenes without dialog that go on a little too long but overall i like it a lot, think it's faithful to the book, and it's beautifully shot
one thing that is bugging me is the age-up of the characters, especially dickie. even taking a few generous years off the johnny and andrew's ages, it doesn't really click for me that dickie is mid thirties and still has his parents sending someone to find him in italy. idk it makes more sense in my head for someone in their 20's with less life experience
but i;m still liking it and will finish it over the weekend
yeahh the age thing was throwing me off as well, especially because freddie and marge seem so young in comparison. i think toms age and charactization would have fit him a little better if it was one of the later books. it was also less emotional than i would have wanted with an intense story - everyone feels a little too calm. i do think its well shot though specially when it comes to portraying tom's fear of water, i just personally don't like the black and white. my favorite thing about it is that the plot is very faithful to the book, im just being super picky because it's one of my favorite book series 😁😁
