Join Creative Director @TerrellTilford of @BandofVices for this collaborative, juried effort at the Korean Cultural Center this Thursday evening… #Repost @launch_la ・・・ “A reflection may be an image mirrored back to the observer or serious thought and consideration. In the case of this exhibition, it’s both.” LAUNCH LA, in partnership with the @kccla presents Reflection, an open call exhibition. Our opening reception is this Thursday August 12th at the Korean Cultural Center, 5505 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles with an opening reception from 6-8:30PM. Covid protocols will be observed: Masks are required and social distancing encouraged. The show is open for viewing Monday through Friday from 10:00AM - 5:00PM, through Friday, August 27th. Parking is available in the rear of the building. Jurors Sunook Park of CSULB and Terrell Tilford of Band of Vices viewed over 400 images from over 100 artists in a blind jurying process. They chose 46 pieces by 39 artists for an interconnected, authentic, and compelling echo of contemporary life. Reflection brings together artists from across Southern California whose practices contemplate and mirror these unprecedented times. Two participating artists (to be announced) will be awarded exhibitions at Launch Gallery at 170 S La Brea Avenue in 2021/22. Sunook Park is a professor in the CSULB School of Art and Brand Coach at SUNOOKPARK Branding. He is an independent curator and founder of ANDLAB: a motivational retreat center, alternative exhibition space, and education lab of art and design thinking. This Week. . Almost 80 galleries will be participating in the inaugural Gallery Weekend Los Angeles, a five-day series of performances, talks, and exhibitions taking place throughout the city. Meant to celebrate the experience of seeing art in-person, the event is organized by Gallery Association Los Angeles (GALA), a collection of Los Angeles-based galleries that banded together last year during the early days of the pandemic to provide an online showcase for the city’s vibrant art scene. The result was GalleryPlatform.LA, a site that features rotating viewing rooms as well as editorial content, offering a way to connect with collectors, curators, and art lovers at a time when physical art spaces had to remain closed. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 1 Corinthians 15:21 Continuing from the first work I did earlier in 2021 titled, ‘We Rise’ referencing the resiliency of flowers in reference of the black body, mind and soul. Roses are considered a token of love and are iconic in that regard, Yet, roses have thorns to protect them from other predators and as they grow, can monopolize the sunshine, overpowering other plants causing them to die. So as I respond to the curatorial statement, I will respond to the title of the exhibits rhetorical question, where do we go from here? We Rose, Out the Mud. The global black community has been forced to exude the magnitude of our strength and power. We have been forced by systemic oppression and colonialism to refuse our oppressors; figuratively and literally breaking through concrete, rising from the mud, just as a rose but with thorns and power in our presence that can be misunderstood as love. Picking a rose is hardly an act of love. Roses aren’t meant to be picked. They are meant to grow and take over. .
