A2IM IndieWeek 2023: Connecting Independent Artists and Industry Professionals
A platform for independent artists and industry professionals to come together
The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) recently hosted IndieWeek 2023, a three-day networking conference held in Manhattan. Recognized as one of the largest gatherings of independent artists in the world, IndieWeek brought together distributors, labels, DSPs, investors, and other key players in the music industry. This article provides an overview of the event, highlighting panel discussions, artist performances, and key industry insights.
Panel Discussions and Industry Insights
The conference kicked off with a vibrant rooftop party presented by ADA, setting the tone for the exciting days that followed. The panel discussions, a central part of IndieWeek, covered a wide range of topics and facilitated insightful conversations among industry professionals. One of the notable discussions was led by Adrienne Muhammad from Open On Sunday, who provided valuable guidance to record labels on effectively managing their catalogs. Muhammad emphasized the importance of understanding the target audience to enable effective marketing strategies.
Evolving technology and processes were also key themes at IndieWeek. Multiple panels delved into discussions on artificial intelligence (AI), sync opportunities, and music marketing. Leslie Rosales from Rostrum Records shared an inspiring example of an artist from Milwaukee who went the extra mile to promote his music. By standing on top of a car and playing songs from his album through a big speaker, the artist generated a buzz that resonated with his local fans. The successful marketing tactic highlighted the power of connecting with a hometown audience.
Rich Goldman from Riptide Music Group shed light on the potential of sync opportunities and their impact on artist exposure. He shared a remarkable success story of an artist who reached close to 100 million streams after their song found its way to YouTube. The song's presence across multiple channels fueled a significant increase in streaming activity, propelling the song's popularity.
In addition to these informative discussions, Eden Shiferaw, VP of NVG, LLC, addressed the latest congressional developments surrounding AI and its perceived national security threats. Shiferaw highlighted the concerns expressed by members of Congress regarding the use of AI by American adversaries and emphasized the need for effective regulation.
Artist Performances and Offsite Events
Alongside the panel discussions, IndieWeek 2023 featured captivating performances by artists and songwriters. These performances served as a testament to the immense talent within the independent music community.
Outside of the main event venue, several offsite events added to the overall experience of IndieWeek. dot HipHop hosted a lively rooftop party, offering attendees a chance to unwind and connect in a more relaxed setting. Additionally, multiple investor conferences provided opportunities for industry professionals to explore potential collaborations and investment opportunities.
Two prominent events were also held to honor the achievements of songwriters. The induction ceremony of the 2023 class of the Songwriters Hall of Fame took place at the Marriott Marquis, celebrating the exceptional contributions of artists such as Glen Ballard, Calvin Broadus (Snoop Dogg), Gloria Estefan, Jeff Lynne, Teddy Riley, and Liz Rose. During the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) annual meeting at Alice Tully Hall, Liz Rose received a special surprise when Alana Springsteen performed a live rendition of their Grammy-nominated collaboration, "All Too Well."
A2IM IndieWeek 2023 provided a platform for independent artists and industry professionals to come together, share insights, and foster valuable connections. The event showcased the dynamic nature of the independent music community and explored the advancements in technology that continue to shape the industry. With memorable performances, thought-provoking panel discussions, and a vibrant atmosphere, IndieWeek 2023 undoubtedly left a lasting impact on attendees. As the music industry continues to evolve, events like IndieWeek serve as important hubs for collaboration, innovation, and growth.

Cabela and Schmitt New Memorable Single 'Music of Life'
Cabela and Schmitt -  Music of Life Music Genre: Rock Vibe: Energetic, nostalgic Located in: Sidney, NE and Fountain, Colorado Sounds like: Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Beach Boys
Music of Life by Cabela & Schmitt is a memorable single about lifes journey. Music of Life's verses, bridge, and chorus were all separate ideas that I was playing with.  After much lyrical help from Wayne and Rich, the chorus and the whole idea of not wanting to lose the feeling of a memorable song came together.  Next, the verses came together using examples of memorable tidbits from life.  We don't want to lose the great memories!  After much rearranging and adjusting lengths of sections, including a short instrumental section, they ended up working and flowing together.  The song has turned out to be a comparison of life's rich and memorable experiences and the great feeling of a memorable song.
Two Schmitts and a Cabela, that's how it all started.  Two brothers and their best friend looking to rock the world.  Like most kids with dreams of fame and fortune, all they really wanted to do was jam out with their buddies. Like all who came before them, they tried everything they could think of to get into the music business.
This passion to play and sing and share their songs found them playing out anywhere someone with a building and electricity would let them...school dances, a garage, backyard parties, weddings, and more.  Almost immediately, this young trio of "brothers" started writing and recording original songs.  Oddly enough, when playing out they found that they really preferred playing their originals instead of covers, and they were connecting with their audiences.
Our love for making music has been mostly a lifelong venture. These sounds come to life in our hearts and minds and they are gifts we have been given to be able to bring these songs to life in our recordings.  It's the most satisfying thing when we get feedback from some of our fans who have been touched by the music. That is so rewarding.
Cabela & Schmitt are:  Rich Cabela (guitar, keyboards), Wayne Schmitt (guitar, keyboards), and Tom Schmitt (bass guitar, keyboards).

Njordlyd's 'Correlations Part Four' Back to Paradise
Njordlyd - Correlations Part Four
Music Genre: Electronic Sub-genre: Ambient; Dark ambient; Industrial ambient; Experimental ambient; Downtempo; Soundscapes; Drone; Experimental; Vibe: Soundscape: Atmospheric; Focus; Concentration; Meditation; Relaxing; Chill, Nature Located in: Den Haag, The Netherlands Sounds like: Mount Shrine / r beny / Burial
“Correlations” is my second EP as Njordlyd.
The EP consisting of 5 tracks that continues the industrial and dark ambient-styled music from the album “Getting Closer”. Most of the tracks on the album makes use of field recordings, transportation samples and samples in general. Moving vehicles such as trains, trams and metros (amongst others). Same goes for field recordings: water dripping, rain falling, breaking waves and birds. This EP is no exception. It continues the journey through stretched samples, field recordings and “reshaped” pieces of music and audio related content and creations. The main difference is: This EP is mainly based on “reshaping” of recorded live studio sessions from 2018 and 2019.
Correlation is a broader concept that goes beyond the album, but is interlinked. In 2018 I was stuck. Having created lots of music for years, but not completed and not releasing  anything. A frustrating period of time in my life. In September that year, I was in need of a change, and started working with iPads and apps, just to see where that would take me in terms of creating and completing music. It started with setting up a small and minimal setup, which I practiced and learned to use well. A totally different way of working for me and much more experimental and improvised than what I was used to. It ended up being more like a live setup and over the course of a year (2018 to 2019) I recorded over a 100 live “sessions”. In the end I did not complete anything for release and went back to the more classic DAW approach. I naturally started reshaping tracks from before 2018, which led to the release of the 5 singles in 2021-22 (Phase One). I am still not sure why it turned out this way, but I am confident that it is linked to (correlating) the 2018 to 2019 period. Without having done that, I am quite sure I would not have been where I am today with my music.
“Correlations Part Four” is the 4th track on the EP “Correlations”. A transition to an almost paradise-like environment. The feeling of being relaxed and calm, the comforting sound of birds whistling in the background. Is it a forest, somewhere in the woods …. an ancient woodland? Again, the journey starts to deviate from its original course. It starts to get a bit more intense. Slowly moving away, the place becomes more and more distant. Moving back towards reality. Enjoying the last comforting sound of birds whistling while the mood of the atmosphere slowly changes to something more busy, ….. more comprehensive.
“Correlations Part One” is the 8th track on the album Getting Closer and the 1st track on the EP “Correlations”. The start of the track has a dominant noise-like sound. It gives the impression of travelling through the air, going somewhere, far away, maybe space. Leaving earth, going somewhere, far away. Throughout the track there is A feeling of uncertainty, almost apprehensive. It feels moody and harsh, a slightly gritty atmosphere. Uncomfortable, possibly passing through unknowns, unfamiliar feelings. What will the journey bring, what is the destination?
“Correlations Part Two” is the 9th track on the album Getting Closer and the 2nd track on the EP “Correlations”. A journey observing the passage of time, the feeling of slipping or drifting away, a wandering mind. Gradually adopting or adjusting to a certain situation. A particular moment of time, a snapshot of a particular part of a long journey. The sensation of travelling through space, somewhere in the future. Indistinct or fuzzy communication and chatter in the background. Arriving somewhere, …. an unknown destination, leaving the question, is this the last destination or is it just another stop on the way to …..
“Correlations Part Three” is the 3rd track on the EP “Correlations”. The journey continues with the feeling of being sad, somewhere in a melancholic place (or space) with life and activity. A nature-like environment, open and spacious. It then slowly transitions into a somewhat more active or busy place (or space), a less nature-like environment. Somewhere with a slightly more industrial and underground feel to it, a sort of downwards atmosphere.
“Correlations Part Five” is the 5th track on the EP “Correlations”. This track closes off the EP with a more moody and slightly darker tone to it, but with the influence of nature still present or intact. The fringe of nature. In equal measure, indistinct and fuzzy chatter in the background. People holding on to something, but at the same time trying to adjust, …. to change. Slowly it gets more frantic, …. more determined. Something to overcome ….
Njordlyd The Artist
Njordlyd is a creator of experimental, dark and industrial ambient soundscapes.
"When creating music, I let the sounds, ideas, mood, and current inspiration control me until a certain point, where it all turns, and I naturally take over the control."
The Person
“Creating music is when I feel I am who I am and where I can be who I am"
I started listening to music when I was around 11 and have been directly involved with music since 1991, where I was involved in several underground music projects, collaborations and releases. The period from 1998 and until the end of 2014 was a phase of self-discovery, where I was absorbed in the process of music creation, learning and focused on defining my sound.
The Music
Towards the end of 2014, I began making music as Njordlyd (my current project) with the release of Silent Echoes (EP) in 2015 and the 2-track single Ghost Running in 2017. In 2021 I started working on a 3 year plan, with 3 phases. Each phase runs from April to April. As part of Phase 1 (April 2021 to April 2022) five 1-track singles has been released: "Circles", "Subconsciously", "Perception", "Voices" and "Clouds".
Phase 2 started in September 2022 with the release of a 2-track single “Interlaced”, which was followed up by the release of the album “Getting Closer” in mid November. In 2023 Phase 2 will be concluded with the release of the single Correlations Part Two and the EP “”Correlations (5 tracks).
Phase 3 will commence in August / September with the release of a single (TBA). Upon completion of Phase 3 in march / April 2024 I will do a wrap of all my music from 2015 - 2024.
My musical inspiration comes from artists such as Future Sound of London, Biosphere, Burial, Marconi Union, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Massive Attack, Portishead and Marconi Union (amongst others).
The Name
Njord was the Norse god of the sea, sailing, fishing and fertility, and a name that I really like. “lyd” means sound, so Njord is a kind of pseudonym, combined with what I do (music), which is related to sound, hence Njordlyd (Njord’s sound).

Living Waters 'Lonely Dancer' Pioneers of Christian Rock
Living Waters -  Lonely Dancer Music Genre: Christian Rock Located in: New England Sounds like: Yes, Rush, early Genesis
Living Waters were pioneers of Christian rock, beginning in 1976, becoming a full production of dance, drama, lighting and music, playing hundreds of concerts There have been many highlights, including playing arenas and Yankee Stadium, and having a song blessed by John Paul II.
"Lonely Dancer" is one of those LONG, piano-based songs of which Mike McBride wrote so many for Living Waters! This song, in particular, was a real concert wowser for the band. One of the future wives, saw LW at Providence Civic Center playing this song during the times we did our "Prodigal Daughter" show, and said to herself, "I HAVE to meet these people!". She sure did, becoming a dancer herself!
In the 90's, Mary, our former drama director, decided to create a story-type video for the song, featuring dancers Kathy & John acting it out. SO, we gathered the band in studio to create an audio version of the song to back the video.
Fast forward to April 2023. Mark decides to take the audio from that video, enhance it a bit, and release it as a single. And boy, does this song leap out at you from the speakers, showing you why it was such a beloved staple LW song in the first place, back in the day! And what a story it tells about our inner journey, that every person can relate to, expressing the conversion from loneliness and alienation to Christian faith and joy. The story is also that of the Bride of Christ, the Church, just like the individual soul, dancing away from sin, despair and death to the Marriage Supper of the Bridegroom, The Lamb of God.

JVLY’s New Single ‘Tacit’ featuring Canadian Singer Una Mey
The power of music to change your mood cannot be underestimated…
Music has the ability to evoke emotions and transport us to different places and times. It can be a source of comfort, motivation, and inspiration. Whether you’re feeling happy, sad, or somewhere in between, listening to music can have a profound effect on your mood.
When we listen to music, our brains release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate our mood and emotions. This is why music can be so effective at boosting our mood and making us feel more positive.
Australian artist JVLY has the kind of music that changes your brain. The music is atmospheric with elements bring ethereal sounds together that inspire focus. The relaxing melodies and captivating movements relax your mind providing a mental escape for the listener.
JVLY’s new single ‘Tacit’ (feat. Una Mey) has a soothingly uplifting sound that plays well with guest vocalist Canadian artist Una May. Her sound is warm and entrancing. She’s the perfect partner for this talented music creator giving the production a sweetness. Love it.
Music Review by Jacqueline Jax
JVLY - Tacit (feat. Una Mey) Music Genre: R&B/Soul, Alt-pop Vibe: happy Located in: Newcastle, Australia Sounds like: Tom Misch, Charlotte Day Wilson, Omar Apollo
JVLY (pronounced “July”) is a project from Australian singer/songwriter/producer Kayle Butler, who has been crafting a unique blend of R&B/Soul music with indie-dance and alternative-pop influences. Kayle has been busy working on a collection of new music which he’ll be sharing with us throughout the year. He kicked thing off last month with a beautifully soulful treat called ‘ambien’ that has since collected over 40k streams on Spotify alone and received airplay on Triple J’s Home & Hosed program. JVLY is coming back to use this week with his next offering which is an elegantly soothing single called ’tacit’ (which means: understood or implied without being stated) that features a special guest appearance from Canadian artist Una May, who also featured on his 2018 single ‘milk&honey’. “tacit’ touches on that strange, unspoken knowing between people. It’s a story of rekindling or reviving something if you look at it directly, but what I found most interesting, and what I was trying to shed light on, is the instance where two humans can have a complete understanding of each other’s thoughts without a single word exchanged. That can’t just be based on history or knowing someone either, because it can happen with strangers, so there’s some sort of inexplicable language that happens with the eyes. It’s wordless but a lot is said and heard. So that’s what this one talks about, and Una and I really wanted the soundscape to capture the feel of that moment of instant understanding.” ~ JVLY

Jolene Lozano's Soulful Voice Resonates with Expressive Tone on New Single 'Delicate'
Jolene Lozano - Delicate Music Genre: R&B, Pop, Soul Vibe: Chill, romantic, sad Located in: San Francisco
Jolene Lozano has a soulful voice with presence that grabs you from the first note. Her sound resonates well with expressive tones and warmth. As a vocalist, she’s got a nice grasp of her own vocal range and knows how to make an impression in the R&B/ soul genre. This area fits the vocalist very well. I would love to hear her stretch her range a bit more on another song and see what happens when she takes on a song with more challenges.
The music is well produced and effective in supporting the melody lines and emotional performance of the vocalist. I love the opening bars and that the vocals come in at just 9 seconds into the song. The song starts with a simple key intro setting the scene for soundscape that’s dreamy. The additional layers of horns adds to the romantic side of this track. They seems to accent the lyrics well with weeping sounds and swells of emotion.
The art work is inspired. I love the colors and watercolor look. It would have been unique to have the artists face placed over it as a filter. That would have been a cool modern take as well.
Over all I love the project and feel it’s a great entry song to start learning about the artist. Delicate tells a story about a girl who has been unlucky with love.  However, when she finally meets someone who could change her luck, she struggles to open up to him - her heart is still fragile from all the times it has been broken. She asks her lover to be patient with her, so she can begin to heal and allow herself to experience real love.

Missiles to Malta’s newest power pop single ‘Television’
youtube
Missiles to Malta -  Television Music Genre: indie rock / indie pop / power pop Vibe: upbeat, energetic, driving, happy Located in: Bethel, CT
Sounds like: Strokes, early 2000s rock
The rise of rock music in 2023 is predicted to bring back the sound of the past. This thirst for making the old new again certainly lends itself to the continued revival of vinyl records and cassettes, as rock fans prefer the raw, authentic sound of physical media.
One band stands out this April 2023 with their newest release. Missiles to Malta is an original four piece indie rock band with post-punk ambitions from Bethel Connecticut.  Devin (guitar / vocals), Steven (guitar), John (drums), and Pete (bass) got together in September of 2021,  and have been blasting their blend of power pop and post punk influences around Connecticut ever since.  They just finished recording their second EP to be released this spring.
Television is the first single we are releasing from our new EP.  It is a driving, upbeat, poppy rock song about the high priestess of American culture.
You can expect nostalgic details and driving guitars to come out in full glory on Missiles to Malta’s newest power pop single ‘Television’. Their use of radio vocal effects set an interesting tone midway through the song. The vocalist has a terrific voice well suited for this bands focus and I thought the entire project presented itself with valid attributes. There is an energy here that isn’t over bearing or hard core, rather smooth and refined rock n roll like ‘The Strokes’.

'Untitled Song of Self-Doubt’ by Gatlin Kate James Makes you feel connected
Gatlin Kate James has a wonderful voice with fragile cadence and soft articulation. This artist has a rhythm all her own delivering a song written close to the heart. The key to any great songwriter is honesty of lyrics but it’s essential for the right voice to carry those words to the listen in a way that resonates. Gatlin shines in this area bringing an uplifting and bright quality to her songs. ‘Untitled Song of Self-Doubt’ brings the listener into her space to not only learn about her but feel connected through the songs she creates.
"Born in Nashville, Tennessee, GATLIN KATE JAMES was no stranger to music. At four years old, she began her career as a session vocalist. She was signed to a national talent agency for acting at 6, and at 11, her love of songwriting bloomed.
By 14, she formed a band with her older brother, Cooper, called "Cooper & Gatlin". The duo signed a deal with a Capital Records subsidiary label, Deepwell Records, owned by Adam Anders (Glee). However, after two years of writing sessions and "building a brand" before release, the band decided the 'label life' wasn't for them. So, striking out on their own, they independently debuted four consecutive singles and music videos, "Break", "Like You", "Fragile", and "On Your Mind", which gathered over 7.1M streams on Spotify and 5.8M+ views on Youtube. In 2019, the band went their separate ways. Gatlin moved to Oklahoma with her husband, Austin James. Now in 2023, Gatlin has a renewed passion for music and released her new EP, “The EP”, on March 24th."
EP Project Bio-
“Warm, vulnerable, honest, Gatlin Kate James invites you on an intimate journey through the inner workings of her mind- a roller coaster ride of crippling self-doubt, fear of abandonment, hope, righteous anger, perseverance, loyalty and unwavering support in times of trouble. This EP has something for everyone— easy listening for those looking for good vibes, and lyrics that go as deep as the seven seas for those looking to really feel something.”
"Untitled Song of Self-Doubt"
"After moving from the spotlight to the shadows for four long years, Gatlin has finally had enough of letting insecurities and self-doubt get in her way. She owes this reignited courage to her closest friends and family, who are a constant source of support and encouragement— her biggest cheerleaders. The hope is that “Untitled Song of Self-Doubt” will meet listeners wherever they are in their journey back to self-belief and inspire them to keep going, even when they’re afraid.” Social Links & Website: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/gatlinkatejames/the-ep

With a singing style as unique as her take on the bedroom pop genre, Sydney Dalessi  has released a precious new single called ‘Trying (to believe)’. I think she’s captured a special vibe that sets the listener at ease from the first sound of her vocal. Sydneys tone is warm and inviting painting a soundscape around the listener like an artist fills a room with canvas and paint. It’s creative, patient and delivered with grace.

Sydney Dalessi Captures a Special Vibe on New Single ‘Trying (to believe)’
“I wrote this song in January as a sort reflection on my goal for 2023: to be gentler to others and myself. The idea that someone could love you not despite, but FOR all of the reasons you disliked yourself , and in your rawest moments, felt like a pretty radical idea. But I’m learning it’s not. “
While deeply personal, this song is not about one specific person, idea , or relationship, but rather the feeling of genuine peace you have, when you are shown love by someone, exactly as you are. And I’ve found that “someone “ can and often should be yourself. Social Links & Website: sydney danielle (@sydney.dalessi)

Modern Day Outlaw DevilScorned (with Ewar Acosta of They Might be Zombies)
This song is balls out, we don't care nor make any apologies for who we are. If you plan to play in the Devils game be prepared for whats to come.
Modern Day Outlaw DevilScorned starts with an unapologetic tone wasting no time shifting into full throttle with guitars, powerful metal vocals, and dynamic layers throwing everything up front.
An exuberant yet skillful guitarist steps in with a few solos adding considerable dramatics to an already substantial rock presentation.
I think this one feeds a hungry audience while impressing the Modern Day Outlaw trademark into an inspired new release.
About Modern Day outlaw:
Modern Day Outlaw is the brainchild of Founding members Ron Brown and Sergio Cesario. Having grown up together and being around the same group musicians the two started by gathering with friends to occasionally play music. Eventually music was written and they realized that they had a unique sound that had to be heard and Modern Day Outlaw was formed. Fusing metal influences with Southern grooves the group set out to create a new sound. Fast forward to 2012 and Modern Day Outlaw released their first full length album “Southern State of Mind” which featured the title track “Southern State of Mind” and “Whiskey”. Instantly fans and industry took notice that something new was in the horizon. Following the release of their full length and a steady stream of shows and promotion MDO set back into the studio with the help of Matt LaPlant(Nonpoint) to record their follow up.
With a new direction and sheer determination the “Day of Reckoning” was completed and released in 2017. “Day Of Reckoning” not only turned many heads, but also built a solid MDO following throughout the world. Now a few years later and pandemic aside they headed back to the studio to expand on their musical journey. With fresh new ideas the band tapped Matt LaPlant once again to produce their new Ep entitled “Through The Gates of Hell”. The first single “Broken Man” off this new effort is set to be released in July of 2022 with music to follow. Stayed tuned for new music by your favorite Outlaws! Lunar Tantrum - Devil mirror dopamine

Lunar Tantrum are a Swedish/Australian rock band founded in Gothenburg, Sweden in late 1991. By winter the same year the group expanded to include Peter Clarin on lead guitar and Torbjörn Antonsson on bass. This line up has remained constant until now although keyboardists Charlie Storm and Matti Ollikainen have both contributed to the band's recordings. Musically the band fuses elements of sixties pop and psychedelia, folk rock, seventies hard rock, progressive rock, garage rock, punk and new wave. The band worked extensively on songwriting, recording and playing live between 1992 and 1998 when they took a lengthy hiatus until 2016.
Missiles to Malta -  Television Music Genre: indie rock / indie pop / power pop Vibe: upbeat, energetic, driving, happy Located in: Bethel, CT Sounds like: Strokes, early 2000s rock
You can expect nostalgic details and driving guitars to come out in full glory on Missiles to Malta’s newest power pop single ‘Television’. Their use of radio vocal effects sets an interesting tone midway through the song. The vocalists has a terrific voice well suited for this bands focus and I thought the entire project presented itself with valid attributes. There is an energy here that isn’t over bearing or hard core, rather smooth and refined rock n roll like ‘The Strokes’.

7 New Music Releases Just Added to our Songwriters Showcase Playlist
Songwriters are not just musicians, they are also storytellers. The best songwriters have the ability to transport listeners to new worlds, evoke emotions, and tell real stories through their music. In this article, we will explore the art of storytelling in songwriting and look at some of the best songwriters who have mastered this craft.
The Art of Stortelling in Songwriting
At its core, songwriting is about telling a story. Whether it's a personal experience or a fictional tale, the best songwriters know how to weave a narrative that captivates their audience. They use imagery, metaphors, and clever wordplay to paint a picture that resonates with their listeners.
Here are our picks for 7 New Releases just added to our Songwriters Showcase Playlist …
youtube
Ann Gray- Sorry Excuse
Folk/Acoustic - Pop - Rock/Punk
Sorry Excuse was the first single released from Ann Gray's debut full-length album, The Half Of It. The song was inspired by Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, which I read last year. I became engrossed with the complicated and toxic relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff. Catherine’s love causes her to see him everywhere and in everything. I was inspired to put an urban spin on it. The song begins with the end of the relationship, “when things were going south, then I drove up to the north”, which is followed by the longing. While Catherine sees Heathcliff in every blade of grass, in Sorry Excuse, the lost lover is seen in grocery lines, takeout menus, and traffic lights.

Riots and Jetpacks - Carousel
Cheyenne Pohl -  Friend Crush
Released by: DistroKid
Genre: Pop Rock, Indie Rock
Moods: Happy, Energetic
Friend Crush is an upbeat rock song that navigates the feelings and emotions a person has when they start to have a crush on a friend. Every time I thought I was starting to have feelings for someone I always asked myself…do you see yourself dating them or is it a friend crush? To me, having a friend crush always meant I loved the person’s energy, they gave me a serotonin type of feeling, and I craved their presence…but I couldn’t imagine us being boyfriend and girlfriend. The song plays off of those feelings with a bit more of a romantic twist. Friend Crush goes through this journey of dissecting one’s emotions and tendencies. Is it a friend crush or is there something more? Why do I care how I respond to your messages? You’re always making me smile…is that a normal friend thing? Why am I so nervous around you? This “crush” feels more intense than the others. Etc. There’s nothing in this world more confusing than trying to figure out your feelings for someone that in the end you probably don’t have real feelings for.
Songwriter Chloe Borthwick has the power to captivate an audience
One talented storyteller that I recently discovered is Chloe Borthwick. Her ability to lead the listener through an experience has the power to captivate an audience. Her descriptive imagery resonates with the listener and creates magical moments. It’s a wonderful experience and I highly recommend listening to her new single, ‘Don't Ghost Me’.
Cabela and Schmitt's Endearing New Single 'DON'T DROP THAT MONKEY'
It’s rare to come across a song that is endearing but DON'T DROP THAT MONKEY is about a little girl whose made up best friend is a stuffed monkey doll. She calls him Harry and hardly ever let's him leave her side. The song is pulling influence from the songwriters of the 70’s with brilliant musical elements intermingled into a fun upbeat child friendly tune. But just as the Beatles often included hidden meanings in their songs, I can’t help but hear a covert message hidden in the song. What do you think it’s about?
GATLIN KATE JAMES - Untitled Song of Self-Doubt Music Genre: Pop Vibe: Emotional, Bright, Inspiring Located in: Tulsa, OK Sounds like: Somewhere between Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish
"Born in Nashville, Tennessee, GATLIN KATE JAMES was no stranger to music. At four years old, she began her career as a session vocalist. She was signed to a national talent agency for acting at 6, and at 11, her love of songwriting bloomed.  Listen on Spotify
Sydney Dalessi - Trying (to believe)
Music Genre: Bedroom pop, indie pop Vibe: Chill, Sentimental, Love Located in: New York Sounds like: Phoebe Bridgers, Boygenius, Billie Eilish,
With a singing style as unique as her take on the bedroom pop genre, Sydney Dalessi  has released a precious new single called ‘Trying (to believe)’. I think she’s captured a special vibe that sets the listener at ease from the first sound of her vocal. Sydneys tone is warm and inviting painting a soundscape around the listener like an artist fills a room with canvas and paint. It’s creative, patient and delivered with grace.

With a wide range of genres and venues to choose from, everyone can find something to suit their taste. From indie bands playing in small bars to international superstars filling stadiums, there is always something happening in Brisbane's diverse music scene.
The club and dj music scene in Brisbane showcases some of the hottest talent in the world. In 2022 dance music really came into its own in Brisbane, with a number of new clubs opening up and existing venues expanding their offerings. If you're a fan of house, techno, or any other electronic music genre, you'll find plenty of places to dance the night away.
Electronic music is thriving in Brisbane and 44 Ardent is one to watch in 2023. Anonymous Australian producer 44 Ardent returns with an invigorating new single titled ‘far gone’, which is just the first of many new singles he has planned for release throughout the year via Mammal Sounds Records.
‘Far Gone’ is a lo-fi house, indie-dance vibe that sets a mood to room from the start. The production is top quality and the layers flow effortlessly moving from one phrase to another with an uplifting beat and infectious tempo. The vocals drift in and out of the focus widening the soundscape with a more spacious feel. The use of vocal effects fit in nicely with the music. This track is a terrific introduction for what we can expect coming from this artist in 2023 and I love the style.
Can’t wait for more.

Songwriter Chloe Borthwick has the power to captivate an audience
Songwriters are not just musicians, they are also storytellers. The best songwriters have the ability to transport listeners to new worlds, evoke emotions, and tell real stories through their music.
‘Don't Ghost Me’ is a contemporary country-pop tune that recounts a first date experience in a hook-driven, twangy musical landscape. The song is narrated from the female perspective with a title that deceptively teases a fear of being ghosted. A few bars in, we learn that it is her date’s desperate plea that ultimately creates his self-fulfilling prophecy.
Chloe Borthwick has a unique presence in her voice and she is able to turn her abilities into something warmhearted and  pleasing. I like her tone as she expresses the lyrics. She’s able to capture the attitude of the song very well adding the right amount of texture to the right areas in the performance.
The lead vocals are honest and commanding, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the story. The melody is supported by catchy piano and guitar riffs, complemented by atmospheric pedal steel harmonies. The song, while potentially pop-oriented, exudes a humble country vibe. A gripping bridge and tender interlude build up to a powerful final chorus. “Don’t Ghost Me” is a must listen for anyone that’s ever been on any side of a ghosting experience.
With an honest, yet forceful lead vocal, you understand the story as if it’s being spoken to you. catchy piano and guitar riffs support the melody, with atmospheric pedal steel hummings- giving what could be a pop song a distinctly humble, country vibe. A climactic bridge, followed by a tender interlude, lead the listener to an impactful final chorus.
Chloe Borthwick - Don't Ghost Me Music Genre: Soft Rock / Pop Country Vibe: Fun, Sassy, Cute, catchy Located in: New York, USA Sounds like: Maren Morris, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo
EP.
Don’t Ghost Me will be a part of a 9 song EP, Sharp Left, to be released in May 2023. Fans of Maren Morris, Carrie, Miley Cyrus and Kacey Musgraves will appreciate the unique instrumentation and cross-genre stylings– as well as the strong, sassy female theme.
Chloe is an award-winning singer-songwriter from NYC. With an organically soulful sound, she effortlessly blends pop, country and R&B. Chloe graduated college with a double major in classical oboe and vocal jazz at William Paterson University. She has found her true love in writing, performing and producing contemporary music.
Chloe has been writing and performing since she was 13 when her original song “Hardly Breathe” placed second in the sixth annual MusiCares® Teens Make Music Contest. The song was also a semi-finalist of the 2016 International Songwriting Competition (ISC). In 2017 she was selected as one of the 8 vocalist in the prestigious 2017 GRAMMY Camp Jazz Session choir, where she sang with 30 of the best young jazz musicians in the country in performances throughout GRAMMY Week, including the GRAMMY after-party and Entertainment Tonight.
Chloe is a full-time musician playing throughout New York and New Jersey as both a self-accompanied soloist or with her band, Chloe Bee Band, comprised of some of the best up and coming musicians in the NYC music scene.

Queen O' (Broken) Hearts by The Foundlings is a fun throw back to 70's classic rock
youtube
While indie rock is all about innovation, it's also about nostalgia and revising what was popular in the past. Still as we move through 2023, bands are doing alot of genre-blending. By experimenting with combining different styles and influences to create something unique, there’s alot of risk but sometimes for maximum rewards.
According to Ken Dunckley of The Foundlings he desc rides his sound…
"If Eddie Van Halen joined the Allman Brothers to form a Beatle tribute band, it would sound like this..."
Queen O' (Broken) Hearts by The Foundlings is a fun throw back to classic rock mixed with a touch of the 70’s. I can’t help but hear elements of London post-punk in the single like that influenced by The Psychedelic Furs or other acts that spawned the British post -punk scene. It’s a pretty wild mix of influences and a fun track to learn about.
