just a reminder that because you write, you are a writer, no matter what you write, or how much you write, or the supposed quality of your writing.

You have a soft-spoken, mild-mannered friend who would never hurt a fly. One day, you accidentally overheard them talking over their phone in a cold, apathetic voice, “I don’t care how you do it. If you don’t return the money by tomorrow, you can say goodbye to your family.”

My thoughts after watching the first episode of Kung Fu:
1. The villain is stunning! I like her better than everyone else, despite only being on screen for three minutes of the whole episode.
Tumblr media
2. Somewhere around season two or three, I would like for the main character (Nicky) to learn that her former teacher (Pei-Lang Zhang) is not as good as she thought and that her nemesis (Zilahn) is not as evil. I want the relationships of the show to be doused in grey paint, for the heroine's entire world to be flipped and shaken as she becomes unsure of what is right and what is wrong anymore. Then I would like a strange, intense alliance to be formed between the "hero" and the "villain". Maybe at first, their partnership would be formed out of an urgency to defeat the season three or season four villain, but then it persists because they genuinely care for one another. Awwww.
Tumblr media
3. I would then expect the fans of the show to ship the heck out of them.
Tumblr media
4. The charming, new love interest (Henry), clearly written in for the heroine should end up with the gay brother (Ryan). It just works and it isn't as cliche.
Tumblr media
5. I want the villain to find value in friendship, family and love from following around the heroine. I'm not sure of they should be together romantically, it's too early to tell. I'll reassess after a few more episodes.
Tumblr media
I may still be having She-Ra withdrawals but I stand by and love the concept of making the heroes and villains of stories develop an enticing relationship that is oddly stronger than any other relationship they have in their lives.
The 'Enemies to Reluctant Friends to I-would-die-for-your-happiness' trope.
You know, like most lesbians ships on the CW.
Tumblr media
Yes, the show is cheesy in parts. If you have ever seen a hero origin story then you can guess how some of the show is going to go, which is why I would love a LGBTQ plot twist.
However, I do acknowledge that given the current political climate that this show already has its struggles. Its portrayal of Chinese culture would and probably does make it an easy target for bigotry. I for one hope the show thrives because I love it so far and I am absolutely on the villain's side and always will be. Fight me.

Undisclosed Truth
Tumblr media
The academy was a turning point. Sophie thought about it every day. The moment she chose her career over her own heart. The day she hurt Kate. Those pieces of paper were slid across the desk by an angry-looking instructor, and he told her that this was her last chance, that if she didn’t sign that she could leave, permanently. Everything she had ever worked for would vanish in an instant.
Kate would never understand, not completely. They both were women in a predominantly male-dominated field, they were both called inefficient, not good enough, not strong enough; men would stand in front of them, speak over them, or ignore them entirely. They worked twice as hard to be considered half as good. Kate, however, was a rich girl, who belonged to an important family, no matter what, Kate would be okay.

What's it like putting up this persona as if you are a character in your own work? How long has it been since you put down the mask and were truly yourself? Are you afraid of who you are? Or do you just like to play games?
How high are you, dude?

Storytime.
I came out at work! Sort of. Not really.
I was talking with my co-worker who, mind you, is an older white fellow with a former military career, and he began to speak about the LGBTQIA+ community. Bracing myself for a fight, I turned my eyes away and listened keenly to his musings.
Now, keep in mind that I work in a very male-dominated industry with big manly men who often have an alpha mentality, and who sound like intoxicated troglodytes when they raise their voices and try to argue with one another. Much to my own amusement.
So anyway, my coworker, let's call him Jack; he went on to say that he didn't believe that the LGBTQIA+ (he didn't use all those letters) community was not as discriminated against as people claimed. Jack told me about his time in the military and how he even knew a gay! Wow. And his gay friend never had any sort of repercussions while serving.
He even used the phrase: "Back then, they weren't around as much."
I stared at him.
In this moment, I had two choices. One, do not
say anything because, why make the atmosphere at an already toxic workplace even worse for myself, or two, shut down his argument completely by exposing myself and chronologically listing all of the verbal, physical, mental abuse I've endured for being gay in my short, twenty-nine years of life.
...
...
...
Maybe it was because I was sleep-deprived. Maybe it was because I had reached my limit for the day. Maybe it was because I had been without any spoons for so damn long.
I did the latter.
Not every trauma. That would have been a lot. Even just to make a point. 😅
Arguably worse, I listed the assaults and abuse that had occurred while I had been with the company. Some of which, were from fellow workers.
He was shook.
And I watched his tiny brain reboot and reevaluate everything he knew about queer people.
Then he respectfully asked me questions and I answered as honestly as I could bear to.
We are not new. We have always been here. And we often suffer silently.

"You see, I understand how we have made you think that we are all of those things with our wide range of Superhero movies and our sweet romance books. We have projected this image of compassion and honour as if it's an accurate reflection." You swallowed nervously as the class stopped to listen. "But the truth is..."
"And that, class..." the professor concluded, "...is why humanity is believed to be the most peaceful, reasonable, cooperative, and overall, docile known species in the cosmos. Any questions?" You, the only human in the class, raised your hand.

Alice
Tumblr media
Gotham nights were hallowed, they echoed and creaked while the populace scurried about, afraid of being caught out in the darkness. At night, the thugs made jokes, the businessmen became two-faced, the good heart became poison. In between the old buildings, rats hid from spots of rain, dodged puddles and hid from the dull street lights.
The City was infamous for its villains, the crazy, the theatrical, the damned, damaged individuals who sort to cleanse the place with their distorted views. Alice of the Wonderland Gang, however, was something different.

While cleaning an attic, you find a ancient dust covered book. Its title reads “Cheat Codes for Universe XT-1138.” Inside are depictions of strange dance-like movements, next to which are phrases like, “infinite health.” On a whim, you decide to try one of these movements out… and it works…

Do you have any tips for struggling writers who literally cry every time they read your stories because they are so perfect?
tip #1- my stories are far, far, far from perfect.
tip #2- don’t compare yourself to other people. there is always someone better than you at something. Always. Mark Twain probably was in awe of Melville. Or Dickens probably felt like trash when compared to Shakespeare. that’s just how it goes.
tip #3- realize that you will get better with time and practice. Real talk, what you’re reading right now, the stuff i’m putting out, is the culmination of 6 years of hard writing. 6 years of writing. Writing is like exercising. you can’t run a marathon without training. writing helps teach you how to move words around, how to weave and dodge and tuck and punch and timing and space and how to live in sentences. you have to do it often, consistently, and with all the effort you can. You should be tired after you write. it should take parts of you.
tip #4- just write. and keep writing. don’t stop writing. one day you’ll read something you wrote 6 years ago and cringe because you’ve come so far.
tip #5- have fun. write something you want to read, write what you want to consume.

I think Jess from Supergirl was in a grand total of one episode for about 7 seconds but she has scince become a staple character for all 10,000 Supercorp fanfics.
obsessed with people who stan side characters it’s so funny like you’ll see them talk endlessly about count gobbledegook IV and then you go to wikipedia and find out they’ve been in five episodes total across a 300 episode series
