ONLYONEOF — a crash course
[guide on google slides]
hello hello!! with onlyoneof’s underground idol project in full swing and a bunch of new lyons joining after ‘begin’ and 'be free,’ i thought now would be the perfect time to again update and re-post this little beginner’s guide i made for them back in 2021. perhaps you’ve seen me talk about them constantly on here or something else, but if you’re looking to get into ooo, this is just the thing for you <3
contains: a little intro about their concepts, brief profiles for the members, links to their discography, my picks from their videography, and select variety and interview clips!
feel free to share, let me know what you think, etc!!
and as always, many thanks to my lovely mutual rook (@20cm), whose wonderful tomorrow x together guide was The source of inspiration for this!!

begin & chungking express
some thoughts as a long-time queer chungking express enjoyer
while chungking express isn’t queer cinema (happy together is & shows up in other ooo work!) it explores failure and longing and alternative, socially “strange” forms of love that are familiar to queer people. in the second half of the movie, which is what begin adapts, faye wong’s character breaks into her love interest’s house and cleans his things for him, which we in a practical lens consider an invasion of privacy and stalking behavior, but in the world of heightened emotions we see it as her illicit expression of care and love for him, which he sees for what she intended it to be. they don’t “love” each other but he carries her basket of onions to work; they don’t “love” each other but she cleans his floors and replaces the broken and worn-out things in his life. she is committed to another dream; he is mired in his own post-breakup loneliness; they want to be with each other in an ill-defined way that is intimate but intentionally coy and uncertain because of other things left unfinished, other what-ifs and things that should be right.

my last word on OnlyOneOf and queerbaiting
Honestly, these days, my feed doesn't really show me people accusing OnlyOneOf of queerbaiting anymore. When libidO first came out, I saw a lot of original tweets and posts asking questions about it, criticizing it, expressing discomfort or uncertainty. But today, after instinct pt 1 and 2, produced by [myself], and undergrOund idOl (as of this wrirting, only begin has been released), all I really see are people making fun of those accusations.
This is partly because I’m pretty careful about my K-pop feed and generally avoid accounts that say shit just to say shit.
But also I think it’s partly because most of us know that argument doesn’t hold water anymore.
first caveat Queer people get to have their own feelings about how their stories are represented. So if you're queer and you don't like the story that OOO is telling, that's okay. But that doesn't mean that no other queer people get to enjoy it for themselves.
If OOO stopped after libidO, if they only did that (and the same level of fan service that every other boy group does), then you might be able to say they were queerbaiting. Even then, I think I’d disagree, because I do think that libidO is a textually, explicitly queer music video. You can disagree with my interpretation, but I believe that libidO shows a uniquely queer experience. libidO makes you feel the tension that exists in the body when there’s a shared desire you aren’t really allowed to act on (and you aren’t sure will be welcomed) and the sheer unbridled joy when you do, finally, at last, connect with that other person. But that’s my take – as a big old queer who’s been around for a while, that’s what I see, and, yes, what I want to see.
So when I say I don’t think OOO is queerbaiting, for me it really comes down to the fact that OOO, their music, and their music videos don’t make fun of those people who think that they’re telling queer stories.
Technically, queerbaiting is including queer references and aesthetics to attract a queer audience only to deny any textual, canonical, or real queerness. But it’s important to recognize that the denial of queerness is often expressed by derision for those queers who are stupid enough to be baited.
That derision and mockery is an element of queerbaiting that I think gets missed in a lot of discussions about the topic that really only focus on whether the person making queer art is as out as you want them to be.
I say this as a queer who has been baited many times. I am so easily baited, you guys! I at one time believed Destiel could be canon (yes, I know). I hoped Sherlock might be queer (really!). I thought Rizzoli and Isles might actually get together (why???)! In those situations, I hoped, believed, however naively, that these texts would acknowledge the story they were telling.
Instead, what I got from showrunners, cast members, other fans, random people who just heard me say “Wouldn't it be cool if they were gay?”... what I got was mockery.
I was told that I was naive, delusional, entitled even. How could I be so stupid to believe that the story I was seeing on screen was in any way the story that would get told. What an absolute buffoon, what an idiot who doesn’t know how the world works, what a crazy, entitled fan to force my (awful, bad) desires onto someone else.
second caveat As a white fan who lives in North America, whose experience of media is otherwise incredibly embedded in the overwhelmingly white western pop culture, I can’t have the last say on this. If OOO were white artists who lived and worked in Canada or the US, in a music industry with lots of queer artists, with a history of queer music and queer culture that is (more) celebrated and rewarded...I might have a different opinion. Because I am tired of those artists who continue to profit from queer aesthetics while angrily refusing to acknowledge that they also have a stake in queerness...You don't have to be out to tell queer stories, but you do have to acknowledge that you're telling queer stories and you do have to uplift queer people who are also telling those stories.
But OOO does not exist in that context.
So when instinct pt 1 comes out and the commentary tells us it’s a story of a boy who experiences desires he knows he’s not allowed to feel, desires that are both beautiful and terrifying, that he knows God doesn’t want him to feel...
When the members produce songs that continue to reference that push and pull of a strange, new (dare I say queer) desire...
When begin shows the hesitation, the attraction and fear and hope of an on-screen gay flirtation and tells us it's for those lovers whose love is not blessed by the world...
When members recommend queer artists to us, and they continue to write, perform, or otherwise participate in telling stories that resonate strongly with their queer fans...
I don't feel mocked. I feel seen. I feel loved.
When OOO tells stories that are recognizable to me as queer experiences, they are telling queer stories! When they express moments, movements that feel like things only a queer person would know, and they do so openly and with respect ...
That is not queerbaiting: that is queer, full stop.
third caveat K-pop is an entertainment industry. OOO is a profit-making endeavour, as is every other K-pop group. So, yes they are making money off of queer people who like their music videos, like their stories, like their music. So does your favourite group. When companies pair members up because of their chemistry, when they make them play the pepero game or that stupid balloon game, when they make them squish their faces close to each other, or any of the hundreds of other small, intimate things that are expected of K-pop boy groups in particular, they're hoping that seeing two men in close physical, almost intimate contact with each other will be titillating and exciting to you. They hope that doing this will make you attracted to them, will make you want them. They hope that this attraction will make you want to buy things and pay to get access to that closeness. That is the industry we are fans of! If you can't accept a group that does that in combination with obviously queer stories, that is not you being queerbaited. That is you being homophobic.
Let me say that again more clearly:
If you like it when another boy group pretends at intimacy, when you are treated to flirtation and closeness between two men that you find attractive, but you don't like it when that boy group also makes music and music videos that celebrate actual queer experiences, you are not being as progressive as you think you are. To call out only OOO for queerbaiting and not any other boy group that engages in the very normal practices of K-pop fan service is to target one of the few groups telling actual queer stories. To criticize only OOO and none of the other groups is actually...just homophobic.
If the only way you can accept queerness in K-pop is when it is subtextual and unacknowledged, then you actually like queerbaiting.
What you don't like is queerness.
If what you don't like is queer people not being able to claim their queerness, people being forced into a closet, then that's fair. I also don't like that. But that's not queerbaiting! That's just living in a homophobic world. If you want to criticize that world, please do. Please ask your faves to do more. Please support musicians who are out, storytellers who are queer, producers who invest in queer artists.
But if the only queer media we are allowed to consume is that which is created by people who are safely and comfortably out, then we seriously limit ourselves and our stories. We exclude the full range of queer stories and people if we demand that everyone who tells a queer story is loudly proudly out.
So no, OOO is not a gay group (as far as we know...ha), and no, you don’t have to love the stories they’re telling. But the stories they're telling do matter to some of us and those stories are queer. To dismiss them as queerbaiting is to dismiss the very real queer people for whom those stories resonate.
