Hi! It's about time I spoke about this to help as much as I can.
Please read this post.
Please do not support the 'Color the Spectrum' livestream that is happening on April 30th, which is created and hosted by Mark Rober (Jimmy Kimmel is also a host.)
The charity involved, NEXT for Autism, is incredibly harmful to the autistic community.
They have no autistic leadership in their administration or board of directors. Everyone on the team is neurotypical.
One of the co-founders, Harry Slatkin, said in the documentary Autism: True Lives, that there were times when he hoped his autistic son (TW, death) would drown in a pond.
They support ABA therapy, also known as 'applied behavioral analysis'. It's a very harmful form of therapy for autistic individuals that can involve stim suppression, forced eye-contact, and overall forcing neurodivergent people to act like neurotypicals.
They have previous ties with the other extremely harmful charity, Autism Speaks!!!
They prioritize treating autistic people. Not helping them.
Several celebrities have drawn out of the event, including Karl Jacobs, Jacksepticeye, Rhett and Link, and Miranda Sings. But it isn't amounting to enough. This charity harms the autistic community and it's so, so important that we minimize the amount of people donating to them.
