SHAKESPEARE ROUTE REVIEW
shakespeare’s route…… a dark horse i truly wasn’t expecting. i really didn’t have any expectations going into his route, even after reading the route preview & watching the trailer on youtube—he was never a fave of mine so i didn’t care enough to have expectations.
but having finished his route, i’ll say that if i had any expectations they would’ve been blown out of the water. the rest of this will be under a cut bc spoilers!!

DID SOMEONE ASK FOR MITSUNARI AND IEYASU ANGST???
No but you’re going to get it!! Here is some angst based on true events!!
Ieyasu rose to power after Hideyoshi’s death by betraying Hideyoshi’s council. Mitsunari was a prominent member of said council. After Hideyoshi died his son, who was about five, was being taken care of by the council until he could take over as ruler. Ieyasu, however, did not like how this was going and decided to take action.
Because of how much Mitsunari loves both Hideyoshi and Ieyasu the decision of who to follow was really hard for him, but in the end he is Hideyoshi’s vassal and even after his death, Mitsunari remained loyal. Mitsunari and Ieyasu then had to fight in the battle of Sekigahara, which broke both of their hearts because of how much they care for each other (even if Ieyasu didn’t like to show it). Ieyasu won the battle and Mitsunari, still alive, fled. Ieyasu let him run because after all that he’s been through there is nothing that would break him more than having to watch Mitsunari die. However...
Tumblr media
Now this is where my own theories come in!!
After Mitsunari was caught by the villagers, I believe they killed him right on the spot, hoping to gain some respect and rewards from Ieyasu, as they thought after battling each other Ieyasu would surely want him dead. This was absolutely not the case!! Ieyasu cherished Mitsunari and seeing him die at the villagers’ hands broke him completely. Similar to how Mitsuhide takes the fall so often so those he cares about aren’t shamed, Ieyasu claimed to have beheaded Mitsunari himself so his death wouldn’t have been so shameful. He shouldered the burden of killing Mitsunari because even if he didn’t do it himself, he still felt responsible and missed him so much. Ieyasu thought that after seeing the end of the Sengoku, he and Mitsunari could finally live in peace, but he still lost him.
THATS ENOGUH ANGST FOR NOW!! LOOK AT THIS REAL THEORY THAT PEOPLE HAVE:

THERE IS HOPE!!!! DRY THOSE TEARS BESTIES!!

Quick Shakespearean language guide
ive seen a couple people make mistakes using it in fics so heres some basic phrases with examples and explanations just to help you out!
THOU - YOU
used when the person being referred to is the subject of the sentence
"Thou are a beast."
THEE - YOU
used when the person being referred to is NOT the subject of the sentence
"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"
"I" is the subject of the sentence, so use "thee"
THY - YOUR
"This is thy book."
THINE - YOURS
"Is this book thine?"
it is also used as "your" instead of "thy" when the word following it starts with a vowel, similarly to how you would use "an" instead of "a"
"Thine eyes shine bright." rather than "Thy eyes shine bright." because "eyes" begins with the vowel "e"
MINE - MY
"This is mine book."
ART - ARE
interchangeable with "are" - don't use it too much so it doesn't sound too forced
"Thou art beautiful"
'TIS - IT IS
not interchangeable with just "is" - make sure to put the apostrophe before the "t"
"'Tis a beautiful day."
'TWAS - IT WAS
not interchangeable with just "was" - make sure to put the apostrophe before the "t" here as well
"'Twas a beautiful day."
BESEECH - PLEAD/BEG
"I beseech thee."
additional note: all of these are interchangeable with modern words. you dont have to use thee or thy or beseech everytime, especially if youre not sure how to. it sounds more forced that way. even in the original plays written by shakespeare, he uses words like are, my, you, yours etc. like i said, dont overdo it!
the best way to start using these correctly is to actually read old literature written in shakespearean language. if you dont want to invest that much time, you can find translators online that will help you! i like to use this one:
once again!! dont use it too much!!! and if it sounds unnatural, just take it out. theres no point including it if it throws off the reading experience or sounds totally ridiculous.
hope this helped!!

Sesshomaru & Rin: InuYasha's Healthiest Dynamic
The Case for SessRin, Platonically & Romantically
Read the full article here: Sesshomaru & Rin: InuYasha’s Healthiest Dynamic by bakasaiga

Why Sesshomaru and Rin have the healthiest dynamic in the InuYasha franchise. Covering content from the InuYasha manga, anime, films, drama CD “Asatte,” and aspects of the sequel series, “Yashahime: Half-demon Princesses” (also known as “Hanyo no Yashahime”).
Introduction
This article aims to explore the rationale for “Why Sesshomaru and Rin have the healthiest dynamic in the InuYasha Franchise” as I want to focus on their dynamic, and use this word over a “relationship.” Because a relationship oftentimes has the connotations of romance, overlooking notions of the platonic nature of relationships. This analysis will focus on Sesshomaru and Rin throughout the InuYasha franchise (anime, manga, films, drama CD, and sequel), mainly analyzing the events depicted in the original series, where they are at the time, platonic.
Tumblr media
The Significance of the First Encounter
Sesshomaru meets Rin in episode 35 of the anime/chapter 129 of the manga, following his unsuccessful battle with InuYasha’s wind scar. Tenseiga, knowing its owner’s life is threatened, sends Sesshomaru to a place that it knows is safe, peaceful, and conducive to his well-being. That place being the nearby forest of Rin’s (at-the-time) home. When Rin first meets Sesshomaru, she recognizes the pending danger of his presence — he’s not human, but he’s hurt. And to some degree, she likely resonates with that. Sesshomaru was all alone, hurt, mentally non-intact, and the most vulnerable we had seen him in the series (even compared to him losing his left arm as we hadn’t seen the aftermath of that yet until episode 133-134). She’s a poor peasant girl who’s suffered immense trauma, suffering, and loneliness. Her initiative to help Sesshomaru came from her generosity; her empathy in seeing someone who reminded her of herself. She offers him food and water, to his dismay of course. But does not take no for an answer — this establishes a part of her personality that may be overlooked: her unwavering and kind-hearted stubbornness. She does not take no for an answer. Rin probably thinks to herself that her fish she gave him was not good enough because she’s been conditioned lately to believe that she’s not good enough. She returns to the village reserve and steals some fish, not for herself, for him. After receiving a beating, she does not flinch or show any signs of remorse but progresses on with her merry way. At this point, it’s observable that despite knowing her story, her scars, and her difficulties, humans do not even empathize, let alone sympathize with Rin. It is the feudal era, after all. She’s a young, disabled orphan and the villagers only see her for what she lacks: a voice, a family, and a place of belonging.
Tumblr media
When she returns to Sesshomaru, without the fish, Rin is visibly shyer, feeling like she had failed her mission but she nonetheless returns out of her stubborn, kind-hearted and generous nature. Sesshomaru would never accept her attempts of rescue, but her dishevelled and pained appearance intrigues him. When he asks about her bruises, this is the first time anyone had ever afforded her a second glance.
Tumblr media
The audience can see Sesshomaru calculate her body language, recognizing that she is mute. Instead of pressing her further or ignoring her outright, he attempts to comfort her (in his own way), making her feel that it is okay if she chooses not to answer him; that her desire to reply to him should only be a desire, not an obligation. I think, on one hand, that was the first moment of something that would resemble compassion that Sesshomaru had ever administered, trying to put himself in her shoes — if someone had asked him to do something that required, for example, his left arm, he probably would have appreciated them saying “you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to” so to provide him agency for something that he actually cannot do. And the same goes for Rin. He recognizes her disability, maybe even resonates with it and decides to empower her with a choice. Choice is important when it comes to the Sesshomaru/Rin dynamic and it’s a word that will come up often. This is the first of many choices that Sesshomaru allots Rin in dictating their soon-to-be long-lasting relationship, laying the foundation for their connection as the series progresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“The first time she was revived, the moment she opened her eyes, they exchanged a soul gaze, which harmonizes the energy between two people. They maintained deep eye contact for nearly half a minute. There were no words, Rin had no opportunity to say thank you, and Sesshomaru asked her no questions. They said all that was needed to be said through their silence.”
-Lawless Lane, Sesshomaru and Rin: The Silent Soul Love
The next time Sesshomaru sees Rin, it is suggested that he actively sought her, whether it be by curiosity or concern for well-being. It’s evident that Sesshomaru had never experienced an interaction like this before and if we just collect the facts we know about him, his reaction is quite logical. He had been born into aristocracy to political parents and was a lord the moment he left the womb. Everyone around him feared him or needed something from him. His chance of a genuine relationship (friendship, family dynamic, or even romance) would have been limited and/or superficial from the get-go. They see him in armour, finely dressed, and never vulnerable. But when Rin first meets him, she doesn’t treat him like her lord, king, or anybody special, she is immediately exposed to his vulnerability. She sees him at his worth. She treats him just as she would likely treat anyone else if they were in need. Rin’s authentic and warm smile plant the seed of compassion in his icy heart because he hadn’t come across this type of raw intention for well-being and to his deduction, he could have felt one of two things (maybe even both): (1) compelled to reward her with another shot at life selflessly, and/or (2) an inquisitive desire to seek that perplexing feeling that her smile gave him. When Rin wakes up, the first face she sees is his. When she died, the last face she saw was his, albeit imagined. Upon her revival, she pursues him without a single word from either party…

Analysis/Rant on Sesshoumaru’s Character Growth
Now that I’ve had a couple of days to think about the latest HnY episode and just really let it sink in, I think what amazes me the most is how Sesshoumaru was somewhat subdued this episode? And that’s not to say he’s “subdued” as a sort of negative connotation, but rather that he’s so much more careful with his words and actions, compared to how he behaved in the OG series.
Case in point, this scene:
Tumblr media
Anyone who’s watched the OG series and TFA know that had someone said these words to Sesshoumaru back then, be it Naraku or any other villain he’s come across, they would have swiftly met either his poison claws, his whip, or his sword. Maybe a combination of both, lol. But Sesshoumaru’s thoughts and feelings are unreadable in this scene, almost as if he’s letting the insult roll of his shoulders; if anything, he’s not letting Kirinmaru get to him.
It’s just so different from how the Sesshoumaru of old would have acted, I think, because his pride as a full-blooded dog demon and the son of Inu no Taisho was–maybe even still is–everything to him. His arrogance, his appearance, his taciturn nature, his manner of speech, even the way he addresses himself: 「この殺生丸」, all these things demonstrate his aristocratic upbringing and how high he holds himself above the other characters in the show.
It’s been brought up numerous times (by Myouga and Toutousai especially) before in the OG series that despite his cold exterior, Sesshoumaru has an incredibly short temper when his pride is called into question. Lol It’s perhaps the one trait he shares with Inuyasha.
But in this scene, he doesn’t take offense–or rather, he doesn’t appear to take offense to Kirinmaru’s insinuations about seeing him–Sesshoumaru, of all people–as some lowly vassal, working for another demon.
And it’s such a poignant and significant scene because it shows the audience that Sesshoumaru–perhaps for the first time–has something (someone(s)) to protect and one that’s worth so much more to him than his pride will ever be. It doesn’t mean that he’s let go of his pride completely as a dog demon and as the son of Inu no Taisho, but rather that he now has the maturity to know when he can and can’t assert his pride.
Kirinmaru has something to do with the dream butterfly–and in doing so, with Rin’s current situation and Setsuna’s missing memories. Sesshoumaru can’t freely act as he’s always been wont to do in the past–for him, so much more is at stake now than just his pride.
And this sort of character development is so very subtle, but it fits him so perfectly, yknow? There’s no doubt in my mind that Takahashi-sensei was at the very least consulted about this episode and how Sesshoumaru would act towards seeing his children face off against Kirinmaru for the first time.
Which brings me to my second point: for as mature as Sesshoumaru acts now, there’s definitely a sense of weariness to him in this episode, one we as the audience haven’t seen from him before. At least, not to me.
This scene below where he glances at his daughters before he takes off with Jaken…it definitely pulled at the heartstrings, no matter how brief it was:
Tumblr media
And before I say anything else, can I just say how amazing of a voice actor Ken Narita is that he was able to just narrowly slip in that hint of fatigue when he utters, “Do not say it.”
I don’t know about y’all, but the way Narita just delivers that line–it definitely sounds like the voice of a changed man who’s just trying to keep it together and not give in to the bloody impulse of transforming into his true form and ripping Kirinmaru and his other problems to shreds. :’D
And as astounding and perhaps even a bit heartbreaking to see Sesshoumaru in this way, I’m still so happy that this is the trajectory his character arc took, yknow?
For so many fans who loved Sesshoumaru as a character, we loved his bad attitude, his style, his philosophy of following his own path, everything. But like those fans who grew up with him as their favorite character–perhaps even some of them now parents themselves–I think it’s just so wonderful to see that one of our beloved characters has grown up right along side with us. 😊
