“Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven,” a studio album and sleeve by Love and Rocket
Sleeve back cover photography by Mitch Jenkins
Beggars Banquet Records
⚜️ ARTWORK
“Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven,” the debut studio album by Love and Rockets, was released on October 11, 1985, through the Beggars Banquet Records label. Pictured is the UK vinyl front, back, and inner gatefold sleeve artwork by Love and Rockets. [2]
“We purposely designed a logo…,” said bassist David J. “The idea was to come up with something that was as memorable as something like Volkswagen or the BMW car logo. We wanted it to look sort of industrial, sort of corporate, very graphic and immediately representative of the name.” [1]
“It was a great basic design you could toy with and tweak, change the colors, or change it in a subtle way, but it was still always basically the same thing. It’s that stamp, a brand… the rest of the artwork was more elaborate and rather psychedelic, and more complex than Bauhaus, actually. Think of that collage we all made for the gatefold for ‘Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven.’” [1]
“We started it in the studio and we all added little bits. I did most of that, to be honest. We finished it round [guitarist Daniel Ash’s] house when I was tripping on LSD and put the finishing touches on it. The monkey pouring the elixir into the cup held by the hand that’s coming out of the box and inside the box is outer space. I mean, yeah… I thought that was the meaning of life when I did that. And maybe it is… ha!” [1]

“Goodbye,” a single by the Sundays

⚜️ ARTWORK
The Sundays (stylized as The SUNDAYS on all releases) were formed in the late 1980s and released three albums. With Rough Trade Records’ financial troubles and the band's decision to manage themselves, The Sundays' single, "Goodbye" emerged in 1992 on the Parlophone label. Pictured is the UK 12” vinyl sleeve and label artwork. [1]
No new material has been released by The Sundays since “Static and Silence” in 1997. [1]
In April 2014, Adam Pitluk, the editor of American Airlines' magazine American Way, tracked down and conducted an interview with vocalist Harriet Wheeler and guitarist David Gavurin in which he put forward the idea of a reunion. They responded, "First let’s see if the music we’re currently writing ever sees the light of day, and then we can get on to the enjoyable globe-trotting-meets-concert-planning stage." [2]

Marais was a French actor, writer, director, and sculptor. He performed in over 100 films and was the muse of acclaimed director Jean Cocteau. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his contributions to French Cinema (1996). [2]
After Cocteau's death, Marais wrote a memoir, “L'Inconcevable Jean Cocteau,” attributing authorship to "Cocteau-Marais.” He also wrote an autobiography, “L'histoire de ma vie,” published in 1975. From 1953 until 1959, his companion was the American dancer George Reich. [2]

“Love Will Tear Us Apart,” a single by Joy Division
Uncredited design and artwork by Peter Saville, Ben Kelly, and Trevor Key
Factory Records
⚜️ ARTWORK
Factory Records released “Love Will Tear Us Apart” in June 1980. Pictured is the uncredited sleeve and label artwork by Ben Kelly and Peter Saville for the UK 7” vinyl sleeve. [1]
The words of the song title had been etched upon a sheet of metal, which had subsequently been treated to a process of ageing with acid before being left exposed to weather with the intention being the resulting appearance of a slab of stone. [2]
A conversation with Kelly is now streaming on Art of the Sleeve’s Spotify podcast (# 19). The designer talks about his new book “Haçienda Landscapes,” as well as his experiences working with Factory Records, Sex Pistols, and OMD.

“Roses” was released on February 27, 2012 through Cooking Vinyl. Produced by Stephen Street, it was the band's first studio release in ten years. Originally planned to be released in late 2003, the recordings for the follow-up to “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” were scrapped after the band decided to go their separate ways. After a six-year hiatus, the Cranberries announced their intention to record a new album during their 2009–2010 reunion tour. [1]

“Hand In Glove,” a single and sleeve by the Smiths
Rough Trade Records
⚜️ ARTWORK
Rough Trade Records released the debut single by the Smiths, “Hand In Glove,” on May 13, 1983. [2]
As the Smiths grew in popularity and the single sold out, more copies had to be pressed. Four versions have been reported. Pictured is the UK 7” vinyl sleeve and label artwork for the first pressing limited to 6,000 copies, which is distinguished by the Manchester contact address printed on the back cover. [3]
The cover image of model George O'Mara, photographed by Jim French, was lifted from Margaret Walter's 1978 book "The Nude Male." According to French the photo was taken at a hotel in San Francisco. It probably dates back to the late 1960s or early 1970s. The photo has been at various times miscredited as having been taken by Leo Ford or Lou Thomas from Target Studio. What appears to be a mole is actually a stain as it didn't appear on the original photograph. [1]
Morrissey had specific instructions on how he wanted the single to be packaged. The sleeve's homoerotic undertones elicited the reaction Morrissey was hoping for of unease and outrage. [2]

“A Broken Frame,” a studio album by Depeche Mode
Sleeve photography by Brian Griffin
Calligraphy by Ching Ching Lee
Sleeve design by Martyn Atkins
Mute Records
⚜️ ARTWORK
Mute Records released “A Broken Frame” on September 27, 1982. Pictured is the UK sleeve front cover artwork and ottakes. [2]
Despite being a photograph, the cover artwork is intended to resemble a painting. It depicts a woman cutting grain in an East Anglian field, near Duxford in Cambridgeshire. It was taken by Brian Griffin using a mixture of natural and artificial lighting. Griffin cited as inspirations the socialist realism of Soviet Russia, especially the work of Kazimir Malevich, and German Romanticism. [2]
“It was a dark rainy day, but around mid-day the rain stopped and the clouds opened,” said Griffin. “We were photographing so quickly so as not to lose this magic atmosphere we were creating with our lights, the sun and such a dramatic sky. A knowledge of Russian Social Realism helped.” [1]
The shot was featured on the cover of Life's 1990 edition of "World's Best Photographs 1980-1990.” [2]

“Deep,” a studio album and sleeve by Peter Murphy
Sleeve photography by Paul Cox
Beggars Banquet
⚜️ ARTWORK
Beggars Banquet released “Deep” by Peter Murphy on December 19, 1989. Pictured is the UK CD front cover artwork by Murphy. [1]
Murphy was the vocalist of the goth rock band Bauhaus and later went on to release a number of solo albums such as “Deep,” “Holy Smoke,” and “Love Hysteria.” Thin with prominent cheekbones, a baritone voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, he is often called the "Godfather of Goth.” [2]
The pinnacle of Murphy's solo popularity in the US came with the release of “Deep.” For this album Murphy sported hair dyed platinum blonde and returned to the more aggressive alt-rock sound that was a trademark of early Bauhaus. [2]
