84-2627-9 - Drawing on the move
These are the sketches I did at workshop 1A: Drawing on the Move with Genine Carvalheira during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global). The workshop was about “learning to draw with speed and confidence” – so Genine had us sketch the the back of the Quezon Heritage House in QC Memorial Circle. After some guidance (and a demo from her) she had…

84-2626 - Telling our own stories
This is a sketch that I did during the Q&A and talks on the first day of the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global). We held the first session at the social hall at the back of the Quezon Heritage House in QC Memorial Circle. Sat-16-Mar-2024

84-2624-5 - 45 second faces
During the “Drink and Draw” evening with #UskQuezonCity and the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global), one of the board members, Eric, encouraged us to try drawing faces really quickly starting at a minute or so and going down to 20 seconds. The first of these sketches shows Eric and Don. In the second one I wrote peoples names as the faces became unrecognisable! I added the watercolour…

84-2623 - Mohan Ysa Shilpi Ce
Here is another sketch done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC event, with the Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) at Urban Chick in QC. I think we had been discussing drawing faces and people, so I gave it a go – there are lots more faces coming in my next post too… Fri-15-Mar-2024

84-2622 - Urban Chick
Here is my first sketch (of many) done during the #UskQuezonCity Tagpuan Sa QC (translated as “Meeting Place in Quezon City”) event. The Executive Board of Urban Sketchers (Global) were visiting for a series of events and activities. For me this kicked off with a “Drink and Draw” social evening at a little restaurant called Urban Chick along Maginhawa Street in QC. I arrived pretty early (I…

84-2621 - Workout
I bought some weights for my wife the other day. The 4kg ones she already has are much more compact…these 3kg ones are huge! Anyway I thought they would make a nice subject to sketch…and a chance to use lots of Opera Pink paint! Thu-14-Mar-2023

84-2620 - Pickle then sketch
The other day I bought green chillies at the supermarket, but they only seemed to sell them in huge quantities. We only use a few each week at best, and then the rest of them go off, so I looked up a recipe to pickle them. Naturally after doing the pickling I sketched the result. We ate some of them with a meal a few days later – they turned out to be delicious, not too spicy (I took out the…

84-2618 - Marikina bridge
After our breakfast on Sunday 10 March we cycled back up the Marikina River, and then stopped on the way back to sketch. This is the view that I had. I couldn’t find anything about this bridge other than that it is called the Marikina Bridge…not a very imaginative name, but fair enough as it’s not a very exciting piece of construction! 84-2618 - Damm’s Restobar
On Sunday 10 March my wife and I went for a cycle ride along part of Marikina River, where they they have quite a long cycle path. We started at what is called the Skating/Bicycle Rink and cycled north for a few kilometres. Then on the way back we went a bit further south to the Chinese Pagoda where we had a lovely breakfast at Damm’s Restobar. Next to us in the restaurant were bikers from the…

84-2617 - San Augustin Church
Here is the last sketch I did with Instituto Cervantes de Manila on 10th March. This church was completed in 1607, during the Spanish colonial period, and is the oldest stone church in the Philippines. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sadly I couldn’t go in because a wedding was going on. The car parking attendants (who were hanging out where I sat and sketched) also told me that I would…

83-2616 - Courtyard in the rain
I am really behind with posting my sketches…because I have been so busy going out sketching! Anyway here is yet another one from the event with Instituto Cervantes Manila (ICM) last weekend. After lunch it was raining a little so we all had to find somewhere to shelter and sketch. I positioned myself under an archway and drew the courtyard of the Institute. The cobbled stone floor was wet and I…

83-2615 - Charles IV King of Spain
Here is the second sketch I did after the initial talk of Enrique Flores at the ICM workshop last Saturday. This statue in the Plaza de Roma, in front of Manila Cathedral, was originally erected in 1824 (and later reinstated in 1981) to honour Charles IV of Spain having sent the first batch of smallpox vaccine to the Philippines. In my sketch the king looks like he’s about to fall off his…

83-2614 - Manila Catheral
This is the first sketch I did after the initial talk of Enrique Flores at the ICM workshop on Saturday. Enrique gave us 40 tips on sketching, one of which was about including people to give a sense of scale – so I deliberately included the crowds outside the Cathedral. For a change I also masked off the edges of this sketch before painting (instead of using a wobbly line)…got to get some washi…

83-2613 - Instituto Cervantes
Here is the first sketch I did when I joined the “Intramural” workshop with Enrique Flores in Intramuros. I had expected bad traffic and difficulty parking (neither of which happened), so I set off really early, and ended up with time to do this sketch of the ICM building, before things began. During the workshop Enrique mentioned that your first sketch is often not so successful…so I am counting…

83-2612 - Pot of pens
I found this little plastic pot (which I think is supposed to be for cutlery on a draining board) in amongst some of our junk and have been using it to hold some of my excess sketching materials. I thought it would make a nice easy subject for an evening sketch…plus I love that green colour (I used Cobalt Green – Holbein Water Colour). Mon-4-Mar-2024

83-2610 - Grips
So, after a lot of #UrbanSketches this post goes back to an evening sketch of something around the home. I bought this pair of flip-flops (what people call slippers here) in Bantayan Island, over the New Year, when our luggage didn’t arrive with us. They were just the first pair I saw in the Hyper-Mart and they have super knobbly soles. Wed-28-Feb-2024

83-2600 - St. Luke’s lobby
This sketch has been patiently waiting for me to finish it for a few weeks. I did this one last month when I was visiting the hospital for a few tests (old man stuff). I had to hang around for a while, so I sat in the main lobby and sketched it. I added the colour just the other day. For a change, this sketch improved when I added colour. Mon-29-Feb-2024
