Aquata did her best to suppress an eye-roll. She was pretty sure this was just a power play on Georgette's part. Now that she knew she had something on Aquata, she was going to dangle it over her head, just to make her squirm. Why else would she be so vague about it? Aquata almost wished she would just do it, so that she wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.
But she couldn't. That was so embarrassing. James would be totally freaked out, and that would be the end of all of it. Which... could be for the best, maybe he deserved someone more normal, but Aquata just couldn't let it happen.
"Okay," Aquata said, her voice uncharacteristically weak. "Have a good workout and let me know if you need anything."

And there it was, the big green monster rearing its ugly head. Almost choking Aquata, like she wouldn't be able to say anything until she swallowed it back down. Yes, he was a sweet guy. Maybe too sweet for Aquata, too normal and funny and laid-back, meanwhile Aquata was a total mess. Maybe it was better to—
She couldn't, though. The thought of telling Georgette fine, whatever, she didn't want him anyway, she just couldn't do it. It was too heartbreaking.
"Georgette, please," Aquata pleaded. "It was a stupid thing to do. But it's not me, or, like, at least, it's not how I wanna be. Can't I do something to make it up to you? Do you have a favorite treadmill? I can reserve it for you."
Not something Aquata was technically allowed to do, but she was getting desperate.

That was a good point. This went deeper than the flotilla. It went deeper than a stolen crown, even. Something was broken in the relationship between Swynlake and Pixie Hollow, and if they ever wanted to repair that relationship, they were going to have to do a little more than a festival.
"You're right," Aquata agreed. "I just wish I knew how we could fix things. I mean, it's not like there's going to be one simple, easy fix, but we can't just let things stay like this. Swynlake wouldn't be Swynlake without the fairies. We need to figure something out."

"We didn't even go to Cornwall, 'cause of the fairy crown thing," Aquata grumbled, and then looked up at Boo's expression to realize that didn't help her case. She groaned. "Okay. Let's say, hypothetically, that I do want it to be something more than that. What is the point if he doesn't?"
Not that he'd said that in so many words, but... Aquata didn't want to jinx it. She was scared. And she was never going to admit that, because nothing scared Aquata Triton.

If Aquata zoomed out of her own feelings toward Drakken and toward this conversation, she would probably see that she and Drakken actually agreed on a lot of fundamental things. But it was the way he was talking to her that pissed her off. How dare he say that she was just fighting for the sake of it? That her causes weren't worthy and important?
"Well, I don't vote for stuff because I made some deal, I do it because it's a cause I care about, and I expect people to do the same with my initiatives," Aquata replied stubbornly. "I might be a politician, but I still have some principles. So yeah, I'll work with you. But I'll only vote for your stuff if it actually appeals to me. No promises."

This was the last interval on the treadmill, but the next portion of the workout would reveal whether Amity really was that powerful or if she'd just failed to pace herself. Aquata hoped it was the former. She wanted to see how far Amity could go, how intensely she could train. It was a different kind of challenge, designing a workout for someone who was already so conditioned.
"And... time!" Aquata called, clicking her stopwatch. "Walk it off. No higher than three miles per hour, catch your breath. How's it feeling?"

Aquata exhaled through her nose, trying excruciatingly hard not to lose her temper. This was the Olympics of keeping her cool. She deserved a medal or something.
"It's not a storyline, it's just what happened," Aquata said evenly. "And I'm sorry about that. Not my proudest moment. If you really want to know what's going on with me and James, there's not really much to the story, we're just casual. Okay? So why don't you just tell me what you want and we can call it even."
God, this was so embarrassing. She had really thought she was past this stage of her life where she got herself into hot water on Twitter. But clearly not.

Aquata blushed and pretended to be very interested in her fried rice. But she couldn't hide a small smile. "I don't know what you're talking about. There's nothing really to tell. We're just keeping it casual, I dunno. It's not messy."

Aquata's eye twitched. She was going to get Georgette the ice, but apparently she didn't actually want it, it was just a power play. Which, of course it was. Aquata had expected that. She'd practically served Georgette the ability to do that on a silver platter. Didn't mean it didn't irritate her.
"I'm really not," Aquata replied, still holding onto the forced smile, though her cheeks colored slightly. "Look, you caught me in a weird mood and tone is hard over text anyway, but I don't have any beef. I'm just trying to be helpful, alright? Considering it's kind of my job. So let me know if there's anything I can do."

Aquata knew she had literally just offered, but still, seeing Georgette stare her down like that make her irritation spike sharply. Who did this girl think she was?!
Well, actually, she was someone who had been on the receiving end of a very embarrassing Aquata Triton moment of weakness. And now Aquata really had no choice. She couldn't have James seeing those messages. Especially not if Georgette really was friends with him like she claimed.
"'Course," she replied with a very forced smile. "I just think we can put that stuff behind us, you know? Really no need to, like, have any kind of bad blood."

"Okay, check your posture! If you need to, you can put your hands over your head, that will help. Just keep your chest opened up," Aquata advised when she saw Amity struggling with breathing. She wasn't particularly concerned, though. This was an intense first effort, so that was normal. "Okay, and back to it! You've got this! You still in it?"
Wait... this was kind of fun.

Aquata clocked the eye roll, and it really took everything in her not to say something about it. So now she was just going to be blatantly disrespectful?! What an asshole...
But, Aquata reminded herself, an asshole who had some very embarrassing screenshots in her possession. Aquata just smiled harder.
"Well, technically, you gotta tap in at the front desk, but that's okay, I trust you. I, uh, I'm one of the trainers here! So I figured I'd see if there was anything you needed. Water, fresh towels, extra hair ties, whatever..."

Aquata could certainly be petty. She held a lot of grudges. Including one toward Drakken. But that wasn't why she was wary of his proposal.
It seemed so... political to her, this quid-pro-quo thing he seemed to be suggesting. Aquata only made temporary alliances on Board, for certain initiatives. Maybe that was holding her back. But she didn't want to be stuck in some kind of agreement.
But if it wasn't a true quid-pro-quo, then Aquata supposed he was just asking her to try and get along with him. Which was insulting in a different way. She could be professional! Sometimes!
"It has nothing to do with you, Drakken. I just don't even know what you want from me! I fight with people when I have something to fight for. I don't just do it because I feel like it. If you have good ideas, obviously I'll try to work with you. But if you don't, well, I'm going to tell you that!"

Aquata Triton: The Story So Far...

Honestly, as soon as Aquata started getting messages back from Georgette, she regretted messaging her in the first place. It was a moment of weakness— the kind of stupid thing Aquata would have done two, three years ago but had since learned her lesson about. But apparently seeing some other girl advising James about his hair color specifically activated something in her.
(And yes, she did spend last night agonizing over why and avoiding the real answer... And no, she wasn't going to worry about it right now).
So far, no screenshots had surfaced. But it was only a matter of time, wasn't it? So when Aquata saw the familiar blonde walking into the gym, she moved quickly to intercept her.
"Hey... queen!" Aquata said, the cheery phrasing sounding very unnatural coming out of her own mouth. That was what the kids were saying to each other, right? "Um, can I help you with something?"

Aquata hadn't really thought about it that way. That James wanted to talk about it, and that he wanted to hear her take on it because that mattered to him. It was oddly touching, but not because she felt like James was doing her a favor or anything like that. It was just nice to know she could talk freely. And that James cared that much that he would keep asking.
"No, you're not. I'm just trying not to put you in a weird position," Aquata sighed. She looked up at him. "I just wish she would have come to me if she was pissed off about the way stuff was handled. I mean, we're friends, even though we get on each other's last fuckin' nerve, and I'm on Board, so I would've tried to help her. But yeah, I dunno, with the flotilla- I trust Queen Clarion's judgment. I am disappointed, like, I love the flotilla, but if she thinks it's best... yeah."
Aquata reached up to push a lock of hair out of James's face. "I don't know, what do you think?"

That was encouraging. Aquata had started off with some doubts (nothing personal, she just knew that some kids overestimated their abilities). But Amity barely seemed fazed.
Could she sustain it, though? That was the real test.
She called for another recovery soon enough. "Focus on your breathing," she advised. "You should be taking three steps between each breath."
