🎤 bossypants 🎤
so here it is, my guilty pleasure: celebrity memoirs. perhaps it’s because I’m nosy, or because there is something delicious about the lives of the ✨famous✨, but I find myself quite regularly picking up these types of books, and big surprise: a lot of them are not written well. I’d say most of the time the pitfalls are that they tend to lend themselves to cliches and come off extremely cheesy, and almost… juvenile? (although that sounds harsh)
I’m happy to report that bossypants, however, did not struggle with these issues and is, in fact, probably one of the best celebrity memoirs I’ve read. it’s written by tina fey, so yes, it’s funny, but doesn’t lack any seriousness or genuineness because of it. it’s a really skillful blend of comedy and heart that made me have a new appreciation for comedians that are able to pull the combination off. this book is 5/5 stars!! ⭐️✨

☕️ before the coffee gets cold ☕️
this book is about a local coffee shop that is shrouded in urban legend, except it’s not a legend at all; this coffee shop can transport it’s customers either back or forward in time. the way this book is structured is that it tells the tales of the various customers that come to travel through time, in each chapter, and what they hope to find when they do.
I think the premise of this book is amazing. I love that the supernatural act of time travel takes place in the juxtaposing quiet and coziness of a coffee shop; the setting brings something new and interesting to the idea of time travel. however, the execution of this idea in the book didn’t work for me. for one, there are so many arbitrary rules to the time travel preformed in the coffee shop that the possibilities for the different plot lines in the book are severely limited. for instance, a time traveler can’t move from their seat in the cafe when they travel through time and they also can’t meet anyone who hasn’t visited the coffee shop before. at first I was on board with these rules because I figured they would mean something later but they kinda… don’t? the only explanation for most of the rules is ‘it’s the way it’s always been,’ which I think is lazy to be honest.
despite being about time travel this book can actually be quite boring at some points, and I felt like it dragged toward the end. suffice to say this was not a favorite of mine, 2/5 stars.
