Looks like I won’t be able to update guys. Turned out not to be a sinus infection but strep throat and flu b. Needless to say the trip was canceled and I’m still not feeling 100% better.
I will try to update stories soon. Spring break started with me getting a nasty sinus infection that has now settled into my chest. I was supposed to drive home yesterday but was too tired to. I’m now leaving later today (it’s nearly 2 am. Feeling better but not 100%. Still coughing and hacking. The doctor I saw didn’t give any steroids (which they usually do when I get sinus infections) so I’ve been kinda treating it at home with advil cold sand sinus as well as cough syrup in addition to the two nasal sprays they gave me.
Me and some friends are hopefully going to the beach on Tuesday so I will be able to write some on the drive, especially since one of my proofreaders @fan-g0rl (tell me why I couldn’t remember you tumblr handle) will be with me in the car 😂
Anyways thank you for the patience 🖤🤍

As the truck went through the window I instinctively reached my hand out to brace myself for the impact. Pain radiated from my wrist all the way up my arm and my head jerked forward as we hit something heavy enough to stop the momentum of the truck.
“Everyone okay?” Joel yelled.
“Yeah.” Ellied said, she didn’t sound like she was in pain, which was good.
“Sure.” I said through gritted teeth.
I knew I messed up my wrist somehow, I just wasn’t in a position to assess if it was a  sprain, fracture, or just plain broken, and I definitely had whiplash in my neck.
“Ellie, you’re not hurt or nothin’?” Joel asked.
“No, I don’t think so, you and Yn okay?”
“I’m fine.” Joel confirmed.
“My wrist. Worry about it later though.”
No sooner did the words leave my mouth than the bullets started being fired at the truck. Instinctively we all ducked down.
“Belts off. Fast!” Joel yelled.
I did as he said, and opened my door that was opposite of the window we crashed through. Before I slid out though, I managed to grab the bag that was at my feet and take it with me. Ellie got out from the back seat and Joel slid out behind me. We all sat bunched up together, using the truck as a shield. After a moment or two, Joel carefully maneuvered to get the rifle out of the truck to have some form of defense against the ones shooting at us.
“Give us your shit, you make it through this! I promise!” I heard one of them yell, but I knew it was a trap. They would take our supplies and kill us.
"Joel... the hole she can fit through it." I said nodding towards a hole in the wall. He nodded.
“Ellie, you see it? When I say go, you crawl to that wall, you climb through and you don’t come out until one of us says, okay?” Joel said to her, I could tell she was scared.
“Ellie, they won’t hit you, okay? They won’t.” I tried to reassure her.
“Just stay down, stay quiet.” Joel added.
“Mhm.” The girl nodded but I could tell she was still scared.
“Ready?” Joel looked at me, and I got my gun ready, despite the shooting pain in my wrist and nodded.
“Go!” Joel yelled and we both stood up, him at the bed and me at the hood, and began firing back at them. Ellie began making her way to the hole.
I wanted to steal a look at her but couldn’t. I just continued shooting. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of Joel’s shots hit one of the men and he went down. I took that chance to duck back down behind the truck.
“You motherfucker!” The other man yelled, he pissed.
I made eye contact with Joel. There was debris further back that would offer bed coverage. He slightly communicated to me to go behind it. I nodded and stayed low as I moved to it. We stayed there silently, the only sound coming from the man as he got closer. Just as he rounded the corner, before he even got a chance to reach for his own trigger, Joel had already pulled his. I sighed in relief.
The calm only lasted for a second though because the next thing I knew, the back door to the building was swinging open and another man came in his weapon raised. He hadn’t seen me, only Joel. The two of them were now fighting up close and I couldn’t get a clear shot. Eventually, the man had Joel pinned to the ground. This was my shot I raised my gun and pulled the trigger. Nothing. Fuck. I was out of ammo. Joel was fighting against the rifle laying across his windpipe, legs kicking trying to force the man off of him. I tried to hurry to get the magazine out of my gun to reload it as fast as I could, but my hands were shaking. Then I heard a gun fire, causing me to jump. When I looked up from the gun, I saw Joel laying there breathing heavily, and the man dead beside him. I looked around for who had shot him and saw that Ellie had crawled back through and shot him.
Joel slowly got up and gave Ellie a look. She handed the gun to him and turned around to go back behind the wall. He put the safety on and turned to me.
“I’m sorry.” I shook my head and tried not to let the tears fall, “I- I thought I was counting how- how many rounds I had shot… I must have messed up… I thought there were two- two more.”
“It’s okay, it happens.” He tried to reassure me.
I shook my head, “If you die, I can’t get here there alone… I can’t do any of this alone, Joel… please.” The floodgates broke.
He was in front of me in an instant, wrapping me up in his arms.
“Sh, it’s okay, Yn. It’s okay… we gotta get out of site, okay.” I nodded weakly, “Come on.”
He led me over to the wall, “Ellie, look for another way in!”
“There’s a door but stuff is against it. I can try to move it.” She said.
Soon we were all in the small room together. We rebarricaded the door and took a few minutes to regroup and figure out what supplies we had left. Between our two bags, we each had some food, Joel’s light, a few extra pairs of clothes, and ammunition. My wrist was definitely sprained pretty good, but I would just deal with that later.
“Now what?” Ellie asked.
“We go up. Hopefully, we can spot a clear route out.” Joel said.
Joel led the way out of the building and down the alleyway behind it. We could hear cars driving down roads nearby, calling out for who I can only assume was one of the men we just killed. We made it to another building and slipped inside, unseen. We continued making our way from building to building, trying to get to the taller ones. It was slow moving but eventually, it became even slower. We had company. Men with armor on, carrying rifles, and handheld battering rams were going from door to door, looking for someone.
“They’re not FEDRA, and they’re not Fireflies, so who are they?” Ellie asked.
“People.” Joel replied from where he stood, peeking out between two pieces of paper covering the window.
“Are we going to be okay staying here, Joel?” I asked.
“For a bit, at least. Looks like they’re checkin’ out apartment buildings first… But they’ll eventually start going through these places too. Take a look, Yn, see that tall one, about four blocks down?” Joel asked, stepping away to allow me to look.
“Yeah, that where we’re heading?” I asked.
“Once we don’t hear a truck, we move.” He confirmed.
We all took a seat to wait for the coast to be clear and make our break for the building.
“You okay, Ellie?” I asked.
Shooting someone is traumatic, and I wanted to make sure she was okay.
“Yup. Wasn’t my first time.” She said. Her tone was short and she clearly not wanting to talk about it yet.
I nodded and let her be.
“Are you okay, let me see your wrist.” Joel said, holding his hand out for me to place my hand in.
I did and winced as my wrist touched his hand. He took a couple of seconds to examine it.
“Can you move it?”
I did the best I could which was hardly anything. But a little movement was good, it wasn’t broken and hopefully, the sprain wasn’t completely torn ligament bad.
“We gotta wrap it.” Joel said.
“It’s fine.” I insisted, but Joel gave me that look.
“You would make me do the same. Ellie, she was stuff to wrap injuries in her bag, hand it to me.” He said.
She did as he asked and soon my wrist was all wrapped up, preventing me from really using it.
“This means I can’t shoot…” I said.
“It’ll be okay.” Joel said, trying to get me not to worry.
“Would now be a bad time to ask if I can have the gun back?” Ellie asked.
Joel looked to me for my input. While she was still pretty young, with the proper knowledge it would be beneficial for her to have her own weapon just in case.
“I mean, in the long run, it’s better to show her now rather than later.” I said and Joel nodded, knowing what I was true.
He pulled the gun out and emptied the chamber, making sure nothing was left in it so it wouldn’t accidentally get shot out and either hurt someone or give our hiding spot away. Then he moved over to where Ellie was to show her how to use it properly. I moved to sit next to them to listen and give any input I could as well.
“Show me your grip.” He said, handing her the gun.
“Take your finger off the trigger.” I said.
We were both surprised that she actually had a pretty decent grip on the gun. There was definitely room for improvement but she at least didn’t have a limp grip on it.
“Now who taught you that?” Joel asked.
“FEDRA school.” “Figures.” Joel said shaking his head slightly.
Then he grabbed her other hand and brought it up to hold the gun as well, “Thumb over thumb, left and squeezes the right.” He explained as he guided her hands on where to go.
“You got a good grip on it now?” I asked, “You sure?” I asked again before reaching over and trying to jerk it out of her grip.
She held it just fine to which Joel and I nodded.
“That’s why you hold it with two hands and not one. Makes it harder for someone to rip it out of your hands.” Joel explained.
Joel collected the magazine off the floor and held his hand out for Ellie to give him the gun back. She did and he reloaded it for her before handing it back. She tested the new weight of it in her hands before nodding and going to put it in the back of her jeans.
“Uh-uh. You put it in your pack.” Joel said.
“Why? You and YN carry it like this.” She said.
“We’re adults. Plus, you’d probably shoot your damn ass off.” Joel said, causing me and Ellie to laugh a little.
“That can’t happen!” Ellie said.
“Oh, but it can. I knew a guy, shot his ass off.” I said causing both of them to look at me funny.
“Yup, when I lived in Alabama, after the breakout.” At this point Joel was looking at me funny, knowing I had never lived in Alabama.
“His name was Forest, Forest Gump. He was friends with brother…” I explained.
“Damn, that must suck! How did he take a shit?” Ellie asked, clearly believing the story.
“I mean, keep your gun back there, you’ll find out for yourself.” I said and that seemed to convince her to put it in her pack instead.
At this point, Joel had stood up and was checking outside.
“It’s clear. We need to move.” He said, already moving to the door to pull the barricades off of it.
Ellie and I both stood up and grabbed our stuff. We turned to Joel just before he opened the door. He hesitated and looked over at us.
“We’ll get through this.” He said and we both nodded.
We slipped out of the building and began making our way towards the taller ones. It was slow going. We constantly had to find cover from being spotted by anyone. The sun eventually began to set and we were finally at the taller ones. Which was great because I was getting tired of running from building to building. Joel hoisted Ellie up so she could break into the building through a vent and then let us in. We waited outside for her.
“Where would you be without me?” She said, triumphantly as she opened the door.
“By now, Wyoming.” Joel said.
“Probably still in Boston.” I said, teasingly as I walked in.
“Oh, yeah. Walked right into that one.” Ellie said, shutting the door behind us.
We looked around the area we were in. It looked like a garage for whatever building we were at. “Okay, let’s make our way up. Rest. Come morning, I’ll take a look, find us a way out of the city.” Joel said, leading the way now.
As we passed the doorway to the stairs Ellie and I both saw how many floors there were.
“We’re not really going up all 47 floors, right?” Ellie asked.
My feet hurt even just hearing that number.
“Forty-five, actually. Or as far as I can make it.” Joel said.
“What about as far as I can make it?” I asked.
“I’m older.” Joel shot back, teasing me.
“I’m pregnant-er.” I said as we began climbing the stairs.
“That’s not even a word.”
“But its true… I’m like what, 12… 13 weeks probably… I can’t remember honestly.” I said the last bit to myself.
“That sounds about right.” Joel said, shocking me a little. I had no idea he was keeping track of any of that.
The climb went silent, until about the 20th floor when I could hear all of us breathing a little harder.
“Hey,” Ellie’s voice finally broke the silence, “When that guy was hurt, how did you know it was an ambush?”
Joel stopped and leaned on the railing for support, “I’ve been on both sides,” he began, “It was a long time ago. We did what we needed to survive.”
“You and Yn?”
“No, not Yn. Before Boston.”
“So you and Tess?” She pressed.
“And the others we were with. Including my brother.” He said.
There were a few moments of silence before Ellie asked another question, “Did you kill innocent people?”
I already knew the answer. Joel avoided the question and just told us to come on as he began climbing again.
Finally, Joel decided we were high enough. My feet hurt. I could barely breathe. We got off the stairs and went into the halls to find a room.
“Holy shit.” Ellie said.
“Yeah.” I agreed.
“Thirty-Three floors. That’s good. That’s high enough.” Joel said.
“It better fucking be.” I said, leaning against the wall, trying to catch my breath.
Joel had taken a seat against the wall beside to do the same thing. He didn’t get to sit for long though because Ellie was already pushing for him to get back up.
“Come on, lazy ass.” She said causing me to laugh as she pulled him up to stand.
“Lazy ass,” Joel repeated under his breath with a grunt, “I’m lazy, I am fifty-six years old you piece of shit.” He said back making us both laugh.
We finally found somewhere to stay for the light. Joel busted through the glass on the door to get us in. Once we were in, Ellie and I found some cushions from the couches to use as mats to sleep on. Unlike last time, this time I decided to put mine and Joel's side my side.
“Y’all better not do anything gross. I’m literally 6 feet away.” Ellie said upon seeing the setup.
“Trust me, we won’t.” I said.
Before she could say anything else, Joel began making all sorts of noise with broken glass. I looked over and he was dumping it all on the ground by the door. Ellie called his name a few times to get his attention but it wasn’t working until she pretty much yelled his name.
“What?” he asked, confused as to why she just yelled.
“What are you doing?” She asked.
“I don’t want someone sneakin’ up on us while we’re sleepin’.” He said.
Ellie nodded, “Ohh, I get it. Crunch, crunch, crunch.” She said as Joel walked over to the make shift mats, “Are you sure you’re gonna hear it?”
I had to stop myself from laughing.
“Of course, I’ll hear it. That’s the damn point.” He said, missing the old man joke completely.
“Okay,” Ellie held her hands up in surrender, “Well, good night, then. Oh, and I already told her but I’ll tell you, no nasty stuff better be going on over on your mats.” She said.
Joel looked over to where I was sitting and saw how I had put ours out. I couldn’t read his emotions in the darkness of the room and it made me panic that I may have stepped over the line. Joel ignored her and came over to me.
“If this isn’t okay and you’d rather sleep alone I can move mine away. I just wasn’t sure if-” I began to ramble.
“It’s fine. Promise.” He said, setting down his stuff beside his side, which also just happened to be the side he always slept on with me.
“Want some help with your boots?” He offered.
I was very capable of doing them, but nodded nonetheless. He slipped them off and I was appalled at how swollen they were already.
“Dude! That’s gross!” Ellie said, from where she was now lying on her side, watching us.
“Well, this is the shit that I am assuming happens when you are pregnant and climb over thirty flights of stairs. I will not be retesting this assumption though.” I said.
“Remind me to never have a kid. That looks painfull.” She said, before rolling back over.
“Do they hurt?” Joel asked softly.
I shook my head, “Not really, a little sore but tolerable.” I said, truthfully.
“What about your wrist? How is that doing?”
“It’s fine. We can look at it in the morning better.” I said before yawing.
Joel nodded and settled down on his side as I did the same. We all lay in silence for a bit before Joel’s voice broke through it.
“Hey, Ellie.” “Yea?”
“When we were talkin’ about hurtin’ people earlier, what did you mean it wasn’t your first time?” Joel asked cautiously.
I could hear Ellie shift around before she spoke, “I don’t wanna talk about it.” Jole turned his back to me to look over at her, “You don’t have to… I’m just sayin, it isn’t fair, at your age… having to deal with that.” He said, trying to comfort her in his own way.
“So, it gets easier when you’re older?” She asked, clearly trying to joke to brighten the mood that had settled around them.
“No, not really.” Joel said, shaking his head slightly.
“I asked about you hearing the glass earlier because I noticed you don’t hear too well on your right side. Is that from where you got shot?” Ellie asked, changing the subject.
“Probably more from shootin’,” He said, truthfully, “So if you wanna keep your hearing, stick to that knife.” He said before rolling back over.
There were a few more moments of silence and I thought they were both drifting to sleep like I was but of course, Ellie spoke up one last time.
“Hey Joel, did you know diarrhea is hereditary?” She asked, and I could already tell where this was going.
“What?” Joel asked confused by the random question.
“Yeah… it runs in your jeans.” She said.
I could feel Joel behind me, looking back at her over his shoulder. I was failing to contain my small laughter. Ellie also laughed some. Joel rolled back over, draping one of his arms over me as I continued to snicker a little.
“Jesus.” Joel said and I could hear the small smile in his tone.
“That is so damn stupid.” He said, trying not to laugh.
“You laughed, motherfucker.” Ellie said.
“I didn’t laugh.” “You’re trying not to!” I chimed in.
“Guess I’m losing it, then.” He said.
“Big time, dude.” Ellie said, still laughing.
Finally, Joel broke and all three of us were laughing. Once we all eventually calmed down, we said our goodnights and went to sleep.
I wasn’t sure how long I was asleep but at some point, my eyes snapped open to the sound of glass crunch under someone’s shoe.

“Oh. I knew I forgot to tell you something about the plans for today.” Dasar said, upon seeing my shocked face.
“What is he doing here?” I asked, voice shaking. I wasn’t sure if I was nervous or heartbroken to see him.
“He’s here for you.” Was all he said.
The boat was docked and Totin got off first. Maul stepped closer as I approached the side. He offered me his hand without a word and I took it. Dasar stood behind me as Maul helped me step over the small gap between the dock and the boat. It felt like the silence that surrounded our small group was going to kill me.
“Well, Totin and I have a few things we need to check on.” Dasar said, breaking the silence.
I looked at him with panic in my eyes. He took a dramatic deep breath to show me to breathe. I took a deep breath and nodded.
“Have a good evening.” I said to them.
“You as well,” Totin said before addressing Maul, “We’re glad you made it, Lord Maul.”
Maul gave them a nod and we stood quietly watching them walk down the dock. Once they were gone Maul turned to me.
“How are you feeling?”
“Fine.” I said quietly, I wasn’t snappy or short, it just felt like I had forgotten how to talk to him.
“Words cannot begin to express how sorry I am, I fucked up.” He said looking at me with sadness in his eyes.
“Yeah, you did, big time.” I couldn’t just forgive him, not this easily, “I can’t forgive you, not right now. I’ll be honest I could care less if you came to the wedding, what hurt the most was that you weren’t there for me and him when you promised you would be.” I said, placing a hand on my stomach as if to protect the baby from him.
“I know, I cannot forgive myself for that either… I know I’ll have to earn back your trust. I know it won’t do much in terms of regaining your trust, but I am hoping it will at least score me a few points… I had a picnic on the beach prepared for us.”
“You’re lucky that I am practically always hungry.” I said, cracking a small smile.
He smiled as well and offered me his arm, “We’ll let’s not keep you waiting then.”
I took his arm and allowed him to lead me down the dock. True to his word, a picnic blanket had been set up for us with an array of food. Maul helped me take off my shoes before he did the same. Then he carefully helped me sit down on the blanket.
“How did you have time to get all of this planned?” I asked, looking at how beautifully everything was set up, even down to the vase to put the bouquet of flowers into.
“Totin played a big role in it. He helped me get the kitchens to prepare the food, and then he obviously arranged for the servants to bring everything down to the cove and set it all up.”
I nodded along as he spoke. Even though he had help, it was still such a sweet gesture, especially when it came to the consideration of what food had been prepared. As I gazed over it all, it was all of my favorites and not a single piece of food that I had any sort of aversion to.
“Would you like something to drink?” Maul asked, reaching into the basket beside him and pulling out an odd-shaped decanter filled with a sparkly, deep green liquid.
“Is that Emerald wine?” I asked in shock.
Emerald wine was extremely expensive because the fruit used to make was only found in a few places. I had never actually had any before, but I recall it being had at certain events on Mandalore.
Maul nodded, “It is. This particular one is non-alcoholic. It’s completely safe for you to drink.”
“Well, in that case, I would love some.”
The decanter made a pop when he opened it making me jump slightly.
“Sorry.” Maul said, handing me my drink.
“It’s okay, I think me jumping scared him more, honestly.” I laughed as I took the glass from him.
I swirled the liquid around in the glass, watching the green glitter swirl around creating a mesmerizing pattern. Once Maul had poured his own glass he held it out to me and cheered my glass before we both took a drink.
“Oh, that is good.” I said.
“Have you never had Emerald wine before?” He asked.
I shook my head.
“Well, once he’s here, I’ll be sure to get us the best bottle of the real thing for you to try.”
“I’ll hold you to that,” I said before taking another sip, “Now, what all do we have?”
We ate and made easy conversation, it was nice. I was almost able to forget about all the turmoil he had caused a couple of days prior. Almost. But not quite. Maul must have noticed this.
“Please don’t think I am trying to distract you from what I did to you.” He said.
“I know you're not… it's just… it’s hard for me when someone I trust to be there for me lets me down. I was so used to being on my own as a child and having no real form of support from anyone that as an adult it takes me a long time to let people in and when I do, it means I truly trust them, and to be let down by someone that I have let in… it hurts, to put it plainly… I really don’t know how to describe what it feels like.” I said as tears began to form on my lower lash line.
Maul dropped his head slightly, “I’m sorry, my dear.”
“I know… I know…”
Maul reached over hesitantly and when he saw I wasn’t going to retreat away from him, he grabbed my hand. We weren’t looking at one another, instead we were both fixed on the horizon. The two moons had risen and were casting a beautiful glow out across the water.
I wasn’t sure how long we sat in silence but eventually, it began to feel like my eyes were barely staying open.
“We should probably get going. Tomorrow is the start of all the fun festivities, it best to get a good night's sleep tonight.” I said.
Maul agreed and stood before turning around and helping me stand up as well.
“Do we need to bring this all back with us?” I asked referring to the platers, blanket, and basket that had been used.
“No, Totin said that the servant droids will come to take care of it.”
I nodded before we began making our way back up the beach. It was quite a long trek back to the palace and by the time we got there, I was completely exhausted. Maul escorted me to the room I had been staying in but stopped once we got to the door.
“What are you doing?” I asked, clearly confused.
“I wasn’t sure how you were going to respond to me showing up like I did. So, a separate room was prepared for me.” He explained.
“Oh… well, can you have your stuff brought here? It’s a large room… and I would prefer to have you here… with me.” My voice was quiet as I made the request, I was still hurt, but that didn’t mean our whole relationship had to stop.
“Of course I can.” He said with the faintest of smiles graced his face.
He followed me in and took in the room. I dropped my shoes by the door since they were covered in sand and Maul slid his off next to mine. Despite how tired I was, I also felt quite gross. Between the salty air and the sand, I felt grimy and really wanted to wash up before climbing into bed.
“I am going to take a shower… care to join?” I asked, already heading to the bathroom.
“Of course.” Maul said, following not too far behind me.
The shower was nice. I was able to get all the grittiness off of my body, and Maul had even begun to give me a light shoulder massage.
“This feels great, Maul, but I need to get out and get off my feet. It feels like they are going to fall off.” I said, leaning back into him carefully so neither of us would lose our footing and slip.
He pressed a kiss to my shoulder after dropping his hands from them, “I can continue on the bed if you want me to.” He offered quietly.
I nodded as I reached over to shut the water off. Then I carefully stepped out and grabbed my towel. Once I was dried off I grabbed the silk robe that was on the hook and put it on. I used the large vanity mirror to make sure it was adjusted correctly over my belly before tying it shut.
“I’m going to go sit for a bit before getting ready for bed.” I said to Maul, looking at him through the mirror. He nodded as he adjusted his towel around his lower hips.
“I’ll be out shortly.” He said.
I nodded and made my way over to the bed. I could the baby moving a lot which was odd considering how late it was. Of course, his sense of time was thrown slightly by travel and being on a new planet with a different rotation time than back home, but I didn’t think it would cause him to be this off. By this time of night, he has usually settled down. I sat down with a sigh, glad to be off my feet. Then I laid back and put my hands on top of my belly.
“Ik'aad, why are you so active, hm? Do you have any idea how late it is?”
He seemed to move even more in response to my voice, which I took as him telling me no, he didn’t know how late it was.
“Well, it’s past midnight. You should be settled down for the evening.”
I got a kick in response.
“It doesn’t matter that we are on a small vacation, your buir would like to get some rest without you moving around like that in there.”
“Are you getting onto the baby for being too active?” Maul asked, leaning against the open doorway to the bathroom.
“Yes, I am. Come here. Feel how active he is!” I said, tilting my head to the side to look at him from the side of my belly.
Maul pushed himself off the doorframe and walked over. I was still lying down on the bed with my legs hanging off from where I sat down originally. Once he was close enough I straightened back up from where I had leaned to the side to watch him walk over. Maul stood between my legs and put his hands on my stomach.
“Wow…” He said after a moment, “What’s got him so riled up?” Maul asked with a small laugh.
“I don’t know… I hope it’s not like fetal stress or anything… I know that can cause a sudden increase in movements…”
“It’s not that, dear. If something was wrong the medical droids would have told you and wouldn’t have cleared you to go on the trip.” Maul said and I nodded, knowing he was probably right, “Maybe he can just tell that you’re happier than you were a day ago…” Maul suggested.
“Perhaps. Or maybe he just knows you’re back and he’s excited to have both his parents back together.”
“That would make two of us.” Maul said.
I shook my head, “Three.” I corrected him, causing him to smile softly.
“Would you like me to continue your massage?” He asked.
“Raincheck? We have a lot to do tomorrow and the following days. I know I’ll need one in the coming days.” I said.
Maul nodded, “Of course, dear. Anything you need in the next few days, please don’t hesitate to speak up. I know you’re going to be super involved with everything, so anything I can do to make your life easier, let me know.”
“Okay, well you can start by helping me up and changing to go to sleep.” I said, holding my hand up to him.
He carefully helped me sit up before walking over to the wardrobe that my clothes had been put into. He found one of his tunics that I had brought to sleep in as well as a pair of sweatpants that the servant droids had unpacked from his stuff while we showered. He brought them over to where I was still sitting. Once I was standing, he undid my robe and gently pulled it off my arms before tossing it on the bed. Then he slipped the tunic over my head and pulled it down over my belly, running his hands over it to smooth out the fabric. He quickly changed into his sweatpants before collecting his towel and my robe, but before he walked them back to the bathroom, he pressed a kiss to my forehead with the promise that he would be right back.
While he was gone, I climbed into bed and got situated under the plush comforter. When he returned he shut off the lights and pulled the curtains closed that would shine too much sunlight into the room come morning. Then, he climbed in beside me. I turned to face him. There were a few beats of silence as I just took in his features, softly lit up by the full moons.
“Thank you, for coming.” I whispered.
“Of course, dear. I promise to never abandon you ever again, okay?” He said, finding my hand under the covers and giving it a squeeze.
I nodded, “Please don’t.” I whispered as I scooted closer to snuggle up against him.
He held me close as we both fell asleep fairly quickly knowing we had a big day ahead of us.

In case anyone was wanting to know how finals went… I failed a major class. Meaning I am either now behind a year (the way my degree is set up, it’s 4 years and can’t be accelerated because each class builds on one another) so I either have to wait to until next fall to retake it, or take it next semester with my other major class I have to take next semester (otherwise I’d have to wait until spring 2025 for it) plus a math class I’m taking at another school bc my school’s math program sucks… so that would be 2 hardcore STEM classes plus a math class… which sounds like I want to throw myself down a flight of stairs…
While this major is something I’ve always wanted to do, I’m starting to think it may not be for me. It’s a fuck ton of math and Covid really fucked me over in that area ngl. So I am currently considering other degrees possibly. I’m considering either interior design or photography maybe… with the photography I could still work within what my major was originally just not the science side, which tbh wouldn’t be horrible… idk.. I have a couple week to think on it though…
My only hold up on just changing is that I am currently going to an out of state school because they had the best school for my original major, but if I change I can easily go to an in state school… but I have a big tight knit group of friends and my boyfriend of 6 months now (hoping to marry this man ngl) there and I don’t want to leave them… it’s fucking hard.

Hi, so I’ve posted some updates throughout the past few months saying that I’ve had to put writing aside in favor of school and work. I have every intention of finishing it, just haven’t had the time to write. Hopefully though now that finals are over I will have time 🖤
(Also I hope this isn’t coming across as me being rude, I didn’t know how else to say it, but I’m not mad/trying to have an attitude or anything 🖤)

Against All Odds pt. 7 (Joel Miller x fem! reader)
SHE LIVES!!!!!! Hey guys sorry it's been awhile!! This semester is crazy!! I got a little time off and was finally able to work on some writing!! I am still getting back into the swing of it so I am so sorry if this isn't my best quality!!
Warnings: more angst, allusions to SA
General Warnings for later on: The main story will have an age gap between Joel and the reader (Reader will be 25 once we get to the main storyline), this will also be your warning that it will eventually be an x pregnant reader (if that's not your jam, I'm sorry) there is also going to be more graphic/trigger parts later on so please always to be sure to read the warnings BEFORE reading. This story will also be 18+ and TO BE ON THE TAGLIST YOU CAN NOT BE AN AGELESS BLOG (i do actually check that) also there first hand full of parts are all prologue so Joel won't actually be in it for a bit
word count: 4000+ (shorter again, I know but I wanted to do the whole ambush part and the suburbs part together in one part, so the next one should be longer, but it may not be out until closer to Christmas once the semester is over)

After we had all gotten a chance to clean up, Joel decided to go out and see if he could get the truck started. Meanwhile, I went around the kitchen seeing if there was anything salvageable to bring with us.
“Truck’s ready.” Joel said as he walked in.
“Good, I found a few cans of food in here. I figured I could check the garage too before we left.”
He nodded before turning around and walking back out. I turned to Ellie who was throwing her bag back on.
“You ready?” I asked.
“Yup. I’ll help you look in the garage when we get out there.” She said as we headed for the door.
“Thanks.”
We got to the truck and tossed our bags in before taking one last good look around. There wasn’t much out here in all honesty. I was ready to just get in the truck and leave when Ellie called me over.
“Hey, I found some more cans over here!” She hollered causing Joel and I to walk over.
“What‘cha got?” I asked.
“I found a few things, they were all under that crusty shirt.” She said pointing to it.
When I saw it, my eyes almost bulged out of my head. I knew where that shirt came from, and it belonged to the man standing beside me who had a similar expression on his face.
“Ellie, go wash your hands, we’ll get the cans.” I said and she gave me a weird look, “Just go do it.”
She shrugged and did as I said.
“Huh, never really expected to see that again.” Joel said tossing the shirt aside.
“Yeah, me neither… Do you think Bill or Frank ever found it?” I asked.
He only shrugged and started grabbing the cans to put in the truck. So much for a conversation.
When Ellie got back, we loaded up the truck with everything we were taking. Joel got into the driver's seat, and Ellie got in behind him. Out of instinct, I went to get in the backseat with Ellie. I had never actually ridden up front ever. I was still in a car seat when the outbreak happened and then anytime I rode in a vehicle after that, I was always in the back.
“What are you doing?” Joel asked.
“What?”
“Get up front.” He nodded to the vacant seat beside him.
I shut the door and went to get in the front seat, “This is weird.” I commented but to tell the truth, I was kinda excited to ride up front.
“Both of you buckle up.” Joel said, as he started the truck.
“What?” Ellie asked.
“This thing.” I showed her mine that I had pulled down.
She glanced around herself before Joel turned around in his seat and reached back to help her out. I couldn’t help but smile to myself, it was really such a dad thing to do, but I tried not to dwell on it too much knowing it would only make me sad. Subconsciously, my hand went to my stomach.
“Is it safe?” I asked as he pulled out of the garage.
“Hm?”
“Riding in the front when you’re pregnant, is it safe?” I clarified.
“You think I would tell you to if it wasn't?” He asked as we began to drive away from the house.
I shrugged and reached up to open the glove compartment. I found a cassette tape in it. It was too faded to read what was written on the side. I shrugged and opened it anyway.
“What are you doing?” Joel asked.
“Road tunes.” I said as I put it in.
An old song started playing that I vaguely recognized. I reached up to change it to see what else was on it, but Joel stopped me.
“No leave it, leave it. This is good. This is Linda Ronstadt. Do you know who that is?”
“I don’t.” Ellie said from the backseat.
“I’ve heard of her… I think my mom used to listen to her… This song sounds a little familiar.” I said.
We pulled up to the gate and Joel stopped. He took a deep breath before pressing the button to open it. The sun was low in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow across Joel’s face. I rested my head against the window as we drove. As the song got to the chorus I heard the familiar words “And I think I'm gonna love you, For a long long time” I couldn’t help but think of Joel… and as I sat there, eyes closed, I allowed myself to pretend, even for just a moment that everything was normal… that Joel and I were together, the outbreak never happened, maybe even we were the same age, going home to tell my parents about the baby, his daughter-no our daughters- sitting in the backseat. It felt so right. It felt like a dream… too good to be true.
Progress was slow. Once every hour or so, we were having to stop to siphon gas out of abandoned cars. During one of our stops, I was looking at the map trying to help refine our route. I traced my pinky over a route that would take us longer but would ultimately be safer.
“Why don’t we follow that one? 84?” Ellie asked pointing to a different interstate.
“Because 84 goes to Hartford, the QZ there is in shambles. We’re trying to avoid it, but not take forever… so I’m thinking… stay here on 90, avoid Connecticut all altogether… only issue is, it does take us further North… so it’s going to take us even longer…” I said, scanning the map for any alternatives.
“Well, we’re already taking forever, stopping every hour.” Ellie said with a sigh as she sat back in her seat.
“I know, but we have to.” I said with a similar sigh just as Joel opened the door.
“We have to what?” He asked, starting the truck again.
“Stop every hour for gas.” I said.
“But why? I thought cars were supposed to be useful. This just seems like a major inconvenience.”
“They were. 20 years ago. But gas breaks down over time… the stuff I’m siphoning out of these cars is practically just water now. So to keep the truck going, gotta make stops. But it beats walking there.”
“I think found us a route to take. It takes us North a bit, but it’ll avoid Conetticet completely. I think it’s worth it if it means we avoid Hartford.”
“Let me see.”
I showed him and to my surprise, he agreed it was the best option.
“We got maybe two hours left of daylight… I wanna get past Springfield at least.” He said.
I nodded and soon we were on the road again. We had already cycled through the tape and were now riding in an awkward silence. I glanced behind me at Ellie to see what she was doing and found her reading a book.
“Whatcha reading?”
She held it up to show me, “‘No Pun Intended: Volume Too’ by Will Livingston,” She said with a smile, “Get it? Volume Too.”
“Jesus.” I heard Joel sigh under his breath, hearing our conversation.
“Is there some good stuff in there?” I asked.
She nodded and then scanned the page she was on to find a worthy joke, “Oh here, it doesn’t matter how hard you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationary.”
I smiled, it was cheesy but good.
“What did the mermaid wear to her math class?... An Alge Bra!” She said, laughing a little at it.
I laughed some too and glanced over at Joel, he was shaking his head slightly, clearly not amused by the jokes.
“I stayed up all night wondering where the sun had gone-” Ellie began another joke.
I knew this one and decided to push Joel’s buttons, just a little.
“But then it dawned on me!” I said with Ellie.
“No way, you know that one?” Ellie said.
Joel looked over at me still not amused, “You can ride in the back.” He said.
“You’re such a stick in the mud, you know that?” I said to him.
Thankfully Ellie got the hint that that was enough jokes for now and closed her book in favor of looking at what we were driving past. Both sides of the roads were covered in cars that had been forced off the road.
“Must have been some truck.” Ellie said.
“Yeah, they used to stick big-ass plows on them, and clear the roads for their tanks and such.” Joel said, not even glancing away from the road in font of him.
“I wanna see a tank!” Ellie said.
“I don’t.” I commented, talks usually didn’t mean good news.
“You will. Tanks, choppers, all that stuff. But they’ll fight the wrong enemies. Just scattered around now.” He said, clearly bringing a heavier tone to our conversation than Ellie was wanting because she quickly changed the topic.
“Oh yeah, I found this…” She said leaning forward and holding a new cassette tape in her hand, “This make you feel all nostalgic?”
Joel glanced at it, “This is actually before my time.”
“Great, even older, old music.” She said, sitting back.
“It’s a winner though.” Joel said, putting it in.
“Found something else too.” Ellie said, pulling out a magazine from under the seat.
She opened it and scanned the pages, “It’s light on the reading but it has some interesting pictures.”
At that Joel and I both looked back to see what she had found.
“No, no, no. Put that back.” Joel said immediately, meanwhile, I was just trying not to laugh.
During the whole exchange, I was just trying not to laugh, but then I was sent over the edge when I heard Ellie say, “Why are all these pages stuck together?”
I couldn’t hold it in anymore, I started laughing so hard it was difficult to breathe. What made it even better was Joel trying to come up with a response. He stumbled over his words and couldn’t get an answer to form.
“I’m just fuckin’ with ya.” Ellie said, before scooting over to the window and tossing it out.
I was in tears by this point.
“Dude, chill, you’re gonna piss yourself.” Ellie said.
“I’m trying not to.” I said, whipping the tears from my eyes.
After that, the drive died down. Every so often we would comment on what we saw. We passed some wild buffalo that had roamed more and more since the outbreak. We passed an old amusement park. You could see the old rollercoasters still standing tall. I had always wanted to ride one, but never got to. Joel told us about a few that he had been on when he and his brother went to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a couple of my brothers had been there before too, I was just too little to go with them. Later on we saw the tanks that Joel promised. And just like the hundreds of cars we had passed, they were left abandoned on the side of the road.
I was grateful when Joel announced that we had done enough driving for the day and pulled the truck off the main road, across a field, and into the tree line to keep us hidden. I got out and stretched. Sitting all day had made my knees stiff.
“I’m gonna make us some food.” Joel said and I nodded.
“I’m going to go find a place to pee.” I said, walking the other way.
When I got back I could smell the food and it made my stomach rumble.
“What is that?” I asked, walking over to stand by Joel.
“20-year-old Chef Boyardee ravioli.” He said.
“Could’ve left out the ‘20-year-old’ part.” I said, taking a seat.
“You can raid what we have, it’s slim pickings though, but I guess if the smell or something is already making you feel sick.” He said.
“Oh, no, I feel fine. It smells really good actually.” I said, happy that I didn’t feel like I was going to puke anytime soon.
“Good. Here.” He said scooping some out and handing it to me, “Ellie, come eat.” He called the young girl over.
Ellie took her portion and sat down with it then immediately dug in.
“Slow down some.” Joel said.
“This is good stuff, what is it?” She asked between bites.
“Chef Boyardee.”
“That guy was good.” She said, shoving another bite into her mouth.
“I actually agree.”
“Me too.” I nodded, taking a bite of my own.
“So… how long we staying out here?” Ellie asked.
“I figured I sleep tonight and drive tomorrow, all day, all night, get us to Wyoming by next mornin’.” Joel said.
It wasn’t a bad plan, I just didn’t know if he’d be able to stay up that long without dosing off. Ellie must have thought the same thing.
“Why doesn’t Yn take a shift driving? I feel like that’s a lot of driving for just one person.” She said.
“I don’t know how to… well, I know the logistics of it, but I’ve never actually done it before. And don’t think right now is the time for driving lessons.” I said.
She nodded before firing off another question, “Can we start a fire? I’m freezing.”
I already knew the answer but Joel beat me to it, “Now why am I going to tell you no?”
“Because infected will see the smoke.” She said with a sigh.
“Fungus ain’t that smart.” He shot back.
“We’re too remote now for infected.” I chimed in.
“Okay, so people?” She asked and we nodded, “So what are they gonna do? Rob us?”
“Oh, they’ll have way more in mind than that.” Joel said.
Ellie nodded, understanding what he meant. A young girl, a woman in her 20s, and an older man wouldn’t be much of a fight against raiders, and if a big enough group got to us and overwhelmed us, they could easily have their way with any of us. It was a scary thought, but it was just the reality of what could happen.
Conversation died off after that and we finished our meal in quietness. Then after that, we got ready to settle down for the night. We each grabbed a sleeping bag and brought them over to the lantern to set up.
“Actually smells pretty good.” Ellie commented as she laid her’s out.
“That would be Frank’s then.” Joel said.
“That would mean you have Bill’s.” I said, popping the tag off of mine. I had found an unused one in one of Bill’s supply stashes.
I hesitated as I thought about where to lay mine out. Yes Joel and I had a few moments today where we seemed like our old selves before we knew about the baby, but I wasn’t 100% sure where we were overall and I didn’t want to test my luck. So, I opted not to lay mine right next to his. We all got settled in and Ellie turned off the light.
I was just about asleep when I heard Ellie call out for Joel.
“Joel? Can I ask you a serious question?” She said.
I was worried that something was wrong.
“Yeah.”
She took a deep breath and sighed, “Why did the scarecrow get an award?” She asked.
There was a few beats of silence before Joel spoke up, “Because he was outstanding in his field.”
I could see him fighting a smile.
“You dick!” Ellie said with a laugh, “Did you read this?”
“No.” Joel said, suppressing a laugh as he rolled over to but his back to us, “Now go to sleep. Both of you.”
It was quiet for a few moments before Ellie spoke once again, “Those people you said… there’s no way anyone knows we’re here, right? No one’s going to find us.”
“No one’s gonna find us.” Joel confirmed.
“Okay.” Ellie said quietly.
I fell sleep soon after that but was woken up only a few hours later. It was still dark out. I rolled over and saw Joel’s sleeping bag was empty. I glanced around and found him standing watch. I quietly got up and walked over to him, making sure not to startle him.
“You should be asleep.” He said.
“So should you.” I commented.
He was silent for a moment, “I couldn’t… just paranoid, I guess.”
I nodded. In the short time she’s been with us, I could tell the effect it had on Joel. I knew about Sarah. And I could tell that having Ellie around was bringing that all back to him.
“Hey, we’ll be okay. Alright?” I said gently as I hugged onto his arm and laid my head on his shoulder.
I could feel the way he relaxed some and let a sigh. After a few minutes of standing there with him a yawn escaped my lips.
“You should go back to bed. I’m gonna stay up. Just in case. We’ll stop again tomorrow night and just get to Wyoming the next day.” He said.
“Okay.” I let go of his arm only for him to catch me by the wrist gently.
“I love you, you know that right?” He asked.
I nodded, “I love you too, Joel.” I said quietly.
And I meant it. Despite the shit show we’ve been through the past few days, I did still love him. I knew we would figure this all out eventually. It would take time, but we’d get there, together. I went back to my sleeping bag and slid back into it. When I woke back up the next morning, Joel was already heating up coffee on the camping stove. Ellie was just waking up as well. About 30 minutes later, we were loaded back up and on the road again.
Joel had poured the coffee into thermos to drink on the road. In the past, I would’ve happily shared it with him. But now the smell was revolting almost. Ellie seemed to agree.
“Is that seriously what the Starbucks in the QZ used to sell?” She asked, clearly disgusted.
“Well, theirs was a lot fresher than what Bill saved up, but yeah, this what they sold.” Joel said.
“Smells like burnt shit.” Ellie said.
“Yeah, it’s gross.”
“You love coffee.” Joel said.
I shook my head, “Not anymore.”
“Alright, eyes on the map, where am I heading?”
“Keep headin' south until we hit 78, that will get us to 76, then from there we’ll get to 70 west which we will stay on for pretty much ever.” I said.
Joel nodded.
“Where in Wyoming did you say your brother was?” Ellie asked.
“Last contact came through a radio tower close to Cody.” Joel said.
I scanned the map to find it and once I did I held it up to show her.
“Wow that is deep in there… And what if he’s not there?” She asked.
“Then odds are he’ll be near a settlement, probably close to another city out there. Ain’t too many of ‘em in Wyoming.”
She nodded and I thought, more so hoped, that would be the end of her questions. I knew this was a touchy subject for Joel and I really didn’t want to upset him.
“What’s his name?” She asked.
“Who’s name?”
“Your brother.”
“Tommy.” He said.
“Younger or older?” She fired off another question at him.
“Younger.” “Why isn’t he with you?”
I watched Joel for his reaction to this question.
“Long story.”
“Is it longer than 25 hours? ‘Cause I think that’s what we got.” She asked.
I could tell Joel was considering his options of telling her or not. To my surprise, he began telling her about how he was a “joiner.” He told her that he enlisted in the Army right out of high school. Then after the outbreak, Tommy was the one who convinced Joel to join a group that was heading to Boston. He told her how Tommy met Marleen and how she convinced him to join the Fireflies. But last he heard he had quit that too and he was alone and that is why Joel was heading out there, to go get him.
“If you don’t think there’s hope in the world, why bother going on?” Ellie asked.
Joel glanced over at me for the briefest second before answering, “You haven’t seen the world, so you don’t know.”
“You keep going for family. That’s about it.” He added.
“I’m not family.” Ellie pointed out.
“No, you’re cargo. And I made a promise to Tess. And she was like family.”
I could tell the conversion was making him shut down.
“What if you don’t find him?” Ellie asked.
It was a legitimate question. One that I was too scared to ever dare ask.
“I will.” Joel said firmly.
“How do you know?”
“I’m persistent.”
That shut the conversation right down.
“Hey Ellie, we got up pretty early. You can take a nap back there if you want.” I said.
“I’m not even tired.” She said.
But sure enough after about 30 min of silence, she was out.
“Are you okay?” I asked Joel.
He sighed, “Yeah.”
“You sure?”
He only nodded.
I decided to drop it, he had already shut down, and there was no point in making it worse. Instead, I opted to also get some rest. Later that day, Joel had changed his mind and continued driving through the night.
I could never fall asleep very long. I ended up dosing off and on throughout the night. When I woke up again, the sun had risen and we were approaching a city. Ahead of us was an overpass tunnel and from the looks of it, it was blocked.
“Where are we?” I asked, rubbing my eyes.
“Kansas City. Wait here.” Joel said, turning off the truck and going to get out but I stopped him.
“Joel, we are way too close to the city for you to go out there alone.” I said, worried about Infected or even other people attacking him.
“I’ll be fine.” He said and got out, then he grabbed the rifle from the back seat.
I watched anxiously as he got closer to the tunnel. There could be anything in there. After a couple minutes of looking, he began making his way back. I didn’t take my eyes off him until he was back in the car.
“Now what?” I asked.
He grabbed the map to look for an alternate route.
“Screw it.” He said tossing me the map.
“What’s the plan?” I asked.
“We go back a ways, get off the highway, come back down, take the next ramp. Puts us back on the road, 5 minutes tops.” He said.
I sat quietly as he drove but I began to grow wary as we got deeper and deeper into the city.
“Where the fuck is the highway?” He asked.
“I’m trying Joel!” I said looking between the map and the signs we were passing. They were all so faded it was nearly impossible to figure out where we were and him yelling at me wasn’t helping.
“Quit looking at the state map!”
“Joel, I am trying my fucking best! Quit yelling at me, I’m already freaked out as it is being this far into the goddamn city!” I shot back.
“Well we wouldn’t be if you could just give me directions!”
“I thought you had a fucking plan? 5 minutes tops, remember?!” I shot back.
Suddenly Ellie yelled from the back seat, “Stop!”
We did and turned to see what was wrong.
“Is that the QZ? Where the fuck is FEDRA?” She asked.
Sure enough to our left was the entrance to the QZ with its gates wide open.
“We need to get the fuck out of here.” I said.
“Hey! Please help!” We all turned to the front to see an injured man stumbling towards us.
“Both of you seatbelts, now.” Joel said, putting his own on too.
“Aren’t we gonna help him?” Ellie asked, clearly confused.
“No.” Joel and I both said.
Joel turned the car to try and get away from him. I was scanning the area for anyone else, knowing it was a trap.
“Joel!” Was all I was able to yell as I saw a guy throw a cinder block from a fire escape.
It hit our windshield and shattered it. Joel kept driving. We ran over something and I could feel the car drop as it popped the tires. Then another man stepped out in front of us and began shooting. Joel swerved the truck to the left. I only caught a glimpse of the glass window before we went straight through it. I closed my eyes and braced myself for the impact I knew was coming.

We walked along in a deafening silence for about two hours, no one daring to say anything. We stopped to eat, but none of us seemed to actually have an appetite. It wasn’t until after our short break that someone finally spoke up.
“So how much further do we have to go?” Ellie asked.
“We’ll try to go another hour then finish the trip tomorrow.” Joel said, throwing his bag over his shoulder.
“Get to the river and stay there for the night?” I asked and he only nodded.
He began walking without another word leaving me and Ellie to follow him. Once again, we were thrown into silence. We made it to a clearing beside the river as the sun began to set, making the shadows of the trees around cast us into darkness.
“We’ll stay here.” Joel declared.
“There’s no Infected here, is there?”
“No.” I tried to reassure the younger girl.
“Sometimes.” Joel said gruffly, contradicting what I had just told her.
“Rarely. Joel has only ever come across one way out here. We’re ten miles from the outskirts of the city. We will be safe, I promise. Joel and I will switch off keeping watch throughout the night.” I said.
“I’ll keep watch.” Joel said, leaning against a tree with his back to us.
I walked over to him and gently placed a hand on his shoulder, “Joel, you need to get some rest. You stayed up last night on watch. I can help watch.”
“No, Tess and I kept watch.” He snapped as he corrected me.
I sighed, “Joel, I know you’re hurting, but please don’t take it out on me. I had nothing to do with that. I’m sorry, I really am but we need to keep going. That’s what she wanted.”
“You’ve realized when she got bitten, don’t you?” He asked, looking forward still.
“No…” I hadn’t really thought too much about it.
“I’ve been trying to figure it out this whole time and I think I got it. The only time it could have happened was in that damn museum. And it got me thinkin’... maybe if I wasn’t so focussed on protecting you, then maybe we wouldn’t have gotten separated. Maybe that clicker wouldn’t have gotten her.”
I dropped my hand, “You- You’re not seriously trying to blame me for Tess getting bitten? Are you?”
He didn’t answer my question just turned around and squatted down to get his canteen.
“I am going to go fill my canteen. You and Ellie should probably do so soon or you’ll have to wait until the morning.” He said as I stood there stunned.
After he walked off I walked over to where Ellie was sitting and sat down near her.
“Dude, are you okay?”
I only raised an eyebrow in response to her.
“You look pale… oh please tell me you’re not gonna hurl again.”
I shook my head.
“Wait, what were you two talking about?” She asked realizing this had something to do with the conversation I just had with Joel.
“He’s blaming me.” I said quietly.
“For?” She asked clearly confused.
“Tess.”
“How?! It’s not like you’re the Infected who bit her.”
I just shrugged.
“Do you need to refill your water or can you wait till morning?” I asked wanting to change the subject.
“I can wait.”
I nodded, “Get some rest, we’ll get you to Bill and Franks tomorrow.”
What I didn’t mention though was that I had just made the decision to stay with them as well and let Joel go back to Boston alone.
After a while of trying to find a semi-comfortable, or more so tolerable, position to sleep against the tree I was leaning against I fell asleep. Despite what he had said earlier I had set a two-hour timer on my watch and had gotten up when it started going off, ready to take over watching out for our little group. But when I offered, Joel gave no answer and after a few attempts, I just gave up and walked back over to my spot to go back to sleep.
The next time I woke up, it was just after dawn and Joel was nowhere to be seen. I panicked for a second thinking he just left us, but I knew he would never actually do that, no matter how pissed off he was with me. I figured he probably went off somewhere to go to the bathroom or something so I decided to be productive and go ahead and refill our waters down at the river. I grabbed all three of our canteens and began to walk down to where the water was deeper so I wouldn’t get dirt in them.
When I got there I was surprised to find Joel there. I didn’t say a word or get too close. My plan was to refill the waters and that is what I was going to do.
“You’re up early.” Joel commented upon seeing me.
I only hummed in response.
“Did morning sickness wake you up?” He asked.
“Nope. I feel fine, Joel. Just refilling the water.” I said, closing one of them and grabbing the next.
“Let me get the last one.” He said reaching for it.
“I got it. I don’t need your help.” I snapped.
“Is the girl awake?” He asked after sighing.
“Ellie,” I emphasized her name, “is still asleep.”
He just sighed again before standing up and walking back to where Ellie was at. I finished up filling the last of the canteens before collecting them all and heading back as well.
3rd person PoV
Joel got back to where Ellie was now sitting against a tree, awake. He didn’t say anything to her just went over to his bag to grab a small piece of jerky to eat before they left for Bill and Franks.
“Do you want your jacket back?” Ellie asked, Joel had given it to her to cover up last night.
He shook his “no” before tossing her the pouch of jerky for her to take a piece as well.
“It’s not her fault.” Ellie said after a few beats of silence.
Joel gave her a weird look.
“Yn, she told me you blamed her for what happened to Tess. You can’t blame her for that. I don’t what exactly you two have going on, but you need to figure it out, and that means you need to realize that she didn’t get Tess killed, I get that you’re hurt but you can’t let that keep you from what you know you gotta do.  I mean come on, man she’s having a baby, don’t you want to be there for her? For your kid?”
“You’re right, you don’t know what we have goin’ on, so don’t pretend to.” Joel said as he threw his backpack onto his back.
By the time Yn got back the other two had already gotten ready to go.
Yn’s PoV
“You ready for a five-hour hike?” Ellie asked.
“I don’t exactly have a choice do I?” I joked as I handed her her water.
“Let’s get going.” Joel said, taking his from me as well.
I wasn’t sure how much time had passed when Ellie finally broke the silence we had been walking in since we left.
“I thought you said there weren’t any infected out here?” She asked.
“Rarely, why?” I answered her.
“What is he looking out for then?” She asked, referring to Joel.
“People.” He answered for me.
“Oh,” The younger girl nodded, “Are Bill and Frank nice guys?”
I could tell she was just as tired of the silence as I was.
“Frank is.” Joel replied causing me to crack a small smile to myself.
“How’d you get that scar on your head?”
That question made me cringe as I waited to see what Joel would answer. But when he gave no response, Ellie decided to press the matter.
“What? Is it something lame? Did you like fall down the stairs or something?”
“I didn’t fall down any stairs.” Joel snapped.
But that didn’t stop Ellie, “Okay, so what then?... ew don’t tell me y’all were doing some weird sex thing and it went totally wrong.” She said, cringing.
“It wasn’t a sex thing.” I said to her.
“Okay, well if you won’t tell me, I’m sure I can get Yn to. She clearly knows.” Ellied said.
Joel sighed, “Fine, someone shot at me and missed.” He said, which wasn’t a total lie.
“See, that’s cool. You shoot back?” Ellie asked.
“Yeah.”
“You get him?”
“No, I missed too. It happens more often than you think.” Joel said.
At this point, I reached up and gently grabbed Ellie to pull her back in step with me so she wouldn’t ask any more about what had happened.
We continued to walk along the path until we came to an old convenient store gas station on the side of the road. I remembered the palace. It was used to stash supplies on runs.
“Wait here. I gotta grab some stuff I stashed.” Joel said, walking closer to the entrance.
Neither Ellie nor I listened and continued to follow him.
“Why do you have stuff stashed here?” Ellie asked Joel.
“You ask a lot of goddamn questions.” Joel grumbled.
“Yes, yes I do.” Ellied replied causing me to bite back a laugh, “But you didn’t answer the question.”
“We leave supplies on routes so if we’re running low on something, we can-” I began explaining but was cut off.
“No way!” The younger girl exclaimed.
I turned to see what has caught her eye. It was a Mortal Kombat arcade game.
“You ever play this one?” She asked as she messed around with joysticks and buttons on it.
“I never did, but my brothers would sometimes.” I said, stepping up beside her.
“I had a friend who knew everything about this game.” She said.
“Really?”
“Yeah! There’s this one character, Mileena, who takes off her mask and she has monster teeth and then she swallows you whole and barfs out your bones!” She exclaimed.
“Well, that’s a lovely mental image.” I teased before turning around to see what Joel was getting into.
“Do you remember where you put it last time?” I asked genuinely since he seemed a bit confused.
“Yes, give me a minute. I’m just zeroing in on it. It’s been a while.” He said.
I putmy hands up in surrender.
“Well then while you zero in on it, Ellie and are gonna look around.” I said.
“It’s all been picked over already. You know that.” He said.
“You never know.” I said as me and Ellie began to look around.
We came up to an open doorway and she hesitated before looking up at me.
“You think there’s anything bad in there?” She asked.
“Not besides grumpy butt behind us.” I said referring to Joel and his attitude.
That made her laugh before she walked through. We walked into a smaller room that just had more debris on the ground. Ellie kicked a piece of cardboard out of the way to reveal a hatch on the ground. We both eyed each other before squatting down to open it.
We got it open but before we could investigate Joel was calling out to us.
“You two good?”
“Yeah!”
We’re fine!”
We yelled back. Then we turned back to the opening we had just found. It was pitch black and we couldn’t see anything inside of it.
“How deep do you think it is?” She asked.
I shrugged before grabbing a piece of debris and dropping it in. It quickly hit the ground so it wasn’t too deep.
“I’m going to go down there.” Ellie said, already taking off her bag.
“No, you’re not. I’ll go. You stay here.”
“You have precious cargo. I’ll go. Look I’ll flip that trash can over and give myself an escape route.” She said.
“Joel is going to be pissed if I let you go.” I said.
“Then you didn’t let me. I bluntly ignored you and went anyways. Wait here, I’ll be right back.”
Before I could react she had jumped down into the floor. It was only about a minute later I heard the gasps of an infected.
“Ellie, get out now.” I said quietly but loud enough for her to hear.
“It’s stuck. It’s fine.”
“I don’t care, get the fuck back up here.” I said sternly but she ignored me.
By the time I was able to stand up, drop my bag, get my gun ready, and jump down, Ellie was already crouching in front of it. Sure enough the infected was stuck under rubble. I watched as Ellie stabbed it in the head with her knife.
“Okay, if you’re done playing with that thing, can we go? Joel is going to freak if he finds out you got that close to one.” I said.
She sighed and stood up before walking back over to me. I could hear Joel calling our names as we climbed out using the trashcan. Ellie went first and just as I climbed out Joel stepped into the doorway of the small room.
“What the hell were you two doing down there?” He asked.
“Looking.” I said, before standing up and grabbing my bag.
“Picked over, my ass.” Ellie said as she stepped passed Joel, proudly showing off the box of tampons she had managed to find down there.
“You find the stash?” I asked.
He nodded, “Left the rifle there too. It’s almost out of ammo and I don’t think they’ll have any for it. Practically useless now.” He said.
I nodded.
Then without another word, he turned around to walk out. I followed behind him. Soon we were walking again. The silence took over.
There wasn’t really much to see this far from a QZ. It was now mainly just land. There was an occasional abandoned car or building but other than that it was just nature. It was nice to listen to, but it was also boring. The last time I had walked through here Joel and I were talking the whole time practically now he had barely said anything to me the whole time since we left the QZ.
Up ahead there was a pretty big hill, I remembered it from last time. There was a plane crashed on top of it. I didn’t particularly like looking at it. Although you couldn’t see anything, you just knew everyone died on that plane. It was eerie to see it.
“You ever fly in one of those?” Ellie asked.
“I never did, no.” I said.
“A few times.” Joel said.
“So lucky.” Ellie said in awe.
“Didn’t feel like it at the time. Get shoved into a little seat, pay $12 bucks for a sandwich.” He said.
“Dude, you got to go up in the sky.” Ellie said, cutting him off.
I had to admit that she was right. It was pretty cool. You never see planes like that flying around anywhere anymore.
“Yeah, well so did they.” Joel said, nodding to the crash, before truing and walking down the path.
“Way to be an ass about it.” I mumbled.
As we continued walking, Ellie continued to ask questions. I answered when I could and listened when Joel would speak.
“So, everything came crashing down in a single day?” The young girl asked.
“Pretty much.”
“Basically.”
Joel and I said at the same time.
“How? I mean no one was infected with Cordyceps, everybody’s fine, eating in restaurants and flying in planes. And then all at once? How did it even start? You have to get bit to be infected, then who bit the first person? Was it a monkey? I bet it was a monkey.”
Her last comment made me laugh a little.
“It wasn’t a monkey. I thought you went to school.” Joel said
“FEDRA school. They don’t teach us how their shitty government failed to prevent a pandemic.” She explained.
“To answer your question, no really knows. There are theories but no one knows with 100% certainty that it came from this or that.” I explained.
“The best guess is that the Cordyceps mutated,” Joel began, “Then some of it got into the food supply. Probably a basic ingredient like flour or sugar. There were certain brands of food that were sold everywhere, all across the country, across the world. Bread, cereal,... pancake mix…”
I caught the way his face dropped at the mention of that last one.
“You eat enough of it, it’ll get you infected. So the tainted food all hits the store shelves, around the same time Thursday. People bought it, ate some Thursday night or Friday morning. Day goes on… they started to get sick. Afternoon, evening, they got worse. Then they started bitin’.”
“By that night, everything had fallen to shit.” I added as the memories came flooding back.
Joel nodded before continuing, “Friday night, September 26th, 2003. By Monday everything was gone.”
I wiped the few tears that had slipped out off my cheeks as we continued to walk.
“Makes a lot more sense than monkeys, I guess…” Ellied said, clearly unsure of what to say to all the information she just received.
We continued to walk and I knew what was coming up.
“We’ll cut across the woods here.” Joel said painting to the tree line.
“Why? Isn’t the road easier?” Ellied questioned.
“Yeah, it’s just… there’s stuff up there you shouldn’t see.” Joel said.
“Well, now I have to see.” She countered.
“I don’t want you to.”
“Too bad let’s go.” She said walking out ahead of us.
“Ellie!” Joel called to get her to stop.
“Joel, just let her. She’ll have to learn at some point.” I said gently grabbing his arm only for him to pull it away from me as he followed Ellie down the path.
She was a few yards ahead of us as we walked along quietly. I kept my eyes glued straight ahead not wanting to see what was coming up beside us.
“Well, whatever it is, I think it’s gone!” Ellied called back to us. She stopped short and turned to her side to see what was in the ditch there. The pit was filled with human bones. Ellie turned to us for answers.
“About a week after Outbreak Day, soldiers went through the country sides, evacuated small towns. Told you you were goin’ to a QZ and you were… if there was room. If there wasn’t.”
This time I was the one to walk away without a word. I walked down the path trying to get away from the sight before us. Although I wasn’t from a super small town, my town wasn’t huge. I couldn’t help but think about if we hadn’t of ran that night would me and my family met the same fate as all of them.
The rest of the walk was spent lost in my own thoughts. Finally, what snapped me out of it was seeing the fence to Bill and Frank’s appear in the distance. I smiled knowing I would be able to sit down and rest my feet soon. When we got to the gate, Joel punched in the code and it unlocked for us. We walked down the road and up to their house. The first thing I noticed was the flowers out front were wilting, Frank would never let that happen.
It was quiet… too quiet. Joel called out both of their names but there was no reply. My heart began to race.
“Wait here Ellie.” I said as Joel and I both went to look for them.
As we walked around I knew what was going on. There was a thick layer of dust covering everything, food in the kitchen was rotting, their garden was being overrun with weeds.
“Joel…” I said, voice cracking.
He turned to me and shook his head, “No. They are here somewhere. Let’s just check their room.” He said, stepping away to try their bedroom door. It was locked.
“Joel… look around, they’re not here. They haven’t been for a while.” Saying it out loud made my heart break.
Before any of us could say anything we heard something at the front of the house. We both rushed up there to find Ellie sitting at a chair reading a letter.
“It’s from Bill.” She said, grabbing the envelope and reading off who it was addressed to, “To whomever… but probably Joel.”
Joel took the letter and scanned over it. I watched anxiously as Joel read the letter. His face was unreadable. He didn’t say a word when he was finished, he just held it out for me to take.
My eyes scanned over the words over and over as if they would somehow magically change. They didn’t. Bill and Frank were gone. I let that set in and read the rest of the letter. The was a “P.S.” at the very bottom.
“I know you know where the keys to my truck are. Take it.”
I laughed sadly as I read it causing Joel to give me a weird look.
“He wants us to take the truck.” I said showing him what I was talking about in the letter.
I saw the faintest of smiles appear on his face. But just as quickly as it appeared, it was gone, and so was he. He turned on his heel and walked out of the house. I sighed and dropped my head.
“Hey, why don’t I walk you down to the old shops, there might be some salvageable clothes down there. We can grab some, bring them here, wash them, take a shower and get cleaned up before Joel and I figure out the next move.”
“Yeah, sure.” Ellie said.
“Alright, come on.” I said as I stood.
We walked out of the house and I could see Joel just standing at the edge of the yard, thinking. I let him be. He needed time to process, the least I could do was give that to him. It didn’t take long to get down there. Frank had fixed them up pretty damn well and there was actually a decent amount of stuff left behind. I told Ellie to pick out two sets of clothes to bring with us as I did the same. I tried to find leggings that would stretch hopefully once I began showing as well as shirts that would be big on me. Hopefully, we’d be done traveling before it got too bitter cold out. I also grabbed a handful of clothes for Joel to look through as well.
“You were gonna stay too, weren’t you?” Ellie asked, suddenly appearing beside me causing me to jump slightly.
I sighed, “Yeah. For the baby. It would’ve just been easier.” I admitted.
She nodded, “I think he’ll come around eventually.”
I gave her a grateful smile, “Are you ready to head back?” I asked.
“Almost, I wanted to show you something I found, just in case you wanted any of it. Come on.” She said, turning and walking away to a different area.
She led me over to a cardboard box. I gave her a weird look but opened it. Inside there little baby onesies. I felt my eyes begin to water a little. This was really happening, I was going to have a baby.
“Shit, you okay?” Ellie asked clearly worried she had done something to upset me.
“Yeah, I’m fine… it’s just kinda hitting me that I am having a baby… like there’s going to be a small human here in a few months… that’s insane.” I laughed, “You pick out 3, I’ll pick out 3, they’re small enough to fold down pretty small in my bag.” I said.
Ellie nodded excitedly. We both stuck to fairly neutral ones. Once we had those we gathered up everything and walked back to the house. When we got there Joel was sitting at the table, letter in one hand and a glass of some type of alcohol on the table beside him.
“What’s all that?” He asked upon seeing our small haul.
“Extra clothes. I am going to wash them, then I figured we could shower, regroup and figure out our game plan.” I said.
“Sure.” He gruffed, reaching for the glass.
“Let me go start these, then I’ll show you where the bathroom is.” I said to Ellie.
Once Ellie was in the shower I went back to where Joel was.
“I grabbed a few things that I thought might fit you as well.” I said as I took a seat beside him.
He nodded.
“What do we do with the kid now?” Joel asked.
“We take her with us.”

“Do you think you and Maul will work everything out?” Dasar asked as we got our snacks ready for our movie.
“I really hope so. Because don’t get me wrong, I love my son and will always love him no matter what happens between me and Maul, but I am not putting myself through this just to co-parent with him. I will do it if that’s what’s best for him,” I nodded down to my stomach, “But I wanted him to have a real family that Maul and I never got.”
Dasar nodded, “I believe in the two of you. Really, I do. I think you two will work it out.”
“I hope we do… come on, let’s just watch our movie.” I said as I settled down in the plush loveseat.
I managed to make it through two movies before deciding to turn in for the night. Dasar escorted me to my room. The room reminded me of the rooms back on Mandalore. Everything here reminded me more of Mandalore than Dathomir ever has. Not in a bad way. There was just a lot more color here, I had become so accustomed to the reds, blacks, and greys of Dathomir that it was all just a bit of a shock to me.
“Sorry if the colors are a bit loud, we like to pull our color scheme from the surrounding coral reefs.”
“No, no, I love it. Very you.” I complimented.
“Well thank you. Get some rest. I have something fun planned for tomorrow… but I am afraid your… standard attire won’t quite do, I will have something brought to you.” He winked and then quickly left, not giving me the chance to question it.
I was a little skeptical as to what he meant by that but didn’t dwell on it too much. Instead, I got ready for bed and laid down. The bed was quite comfortable and once I got the pillows adjusted right I was able to slowly drift off to sleep.
The next morning I woke up to the sun casting its rays over my eyes. I got up slowly and let the warmth wash over me before getting ready for the day. I had just gotten out of the shower and wrapped a robe around myself when there was a knock on the door.
“Who is it?” I called.
“It’s me I have your dress!” Dasar called.
I let him and nearly choked on air when I saw the yellow sundress he was carrying.
“I am not wearing that.” I said.
“Yes, you are. Come on.”
“Fine, bring it here.” I sighed.
He did and I changed into it. It was way out of my usual attire but I had to admit it looked really cute. I swayed slightly, looking in the mirror as the fabric flowed, and couldn’t help but smile.
“Oh, look at you.” Dasar teased from where he stood off to the side watching me look at myself in the mirror.
“Okay, okay, fine. I look good in it. Okay, so what is the plan for the day?” I asked after I slipped on some shoes.
“Well, first we’re going to go have breakfast with Totin and then I will fill you in for the rest of the day. Sound good?” He asked, offering me his arm.
“Sounds wonderful.” I said taking his arm.
When we made it to the private dining area Totin was waiting for us. I let go of Dasar’s arm and went to give him a hug.
“How are you darling?” He said, giving me a sympathetic look which told me he obviously knew about what happened between Maul and me.
“I’m okay. Honestly, I am just happy to be here. I’m not sure what the plan is for the day but I am excited to see more of your lovely home. It’s stunning.”
“Well, thank you. Eat up, we’re going to give you a proper tour of the palace. I figured we could end with the ballroom and the outside ceremony area.” Dasar said.
“Sounds great.” I smiled before walking over to take my seat.
Some servant droids brought out platters of food for us. All of it tasted absolutely amazing. Despite the fact that I wanted to try everything, I knew I would regret feeling too full later, so I made a mental note of what I tried and what I didn’t try so I would know what to pick the next day. Once we were done, we chatted for a bit as plates were cleared then we got up and began touring the palace. It wasn’t as big as the one back on Mandalore but equally as impressive. We came up to a bare wall in one of the main halls.
“Tragic isn’t it?” Dasar said.
“What?”
“The wall, it’s blank.” Totin added.
“If only we knew someone who could paint us a beautiful piece that showed us getting married. Of course, there’s no rush, whoever does it could take their time with personal matters, like their children… if they had any.” Dasar hinted bluntly.
“Are you asking me to paint you a picture of your wedding?” I asked with a smile.
“Oh, I would never ask that of you know what you have coming up. But if you wanted to and were offering out of the kindness of your own heart… well I couldn’t say no.”
I laughed before saying, “Make sure I get in touch with the photographer so I can get some reference photos to use.”
“Thank you. And really there is no rush at all. You can honestly wait until he’s born and everything if you wanted to.” Dasar said with a soft tone proving to me that he was serious about not caring if it took a while.
“I’ll see how my leave goes.”
Dasar smiled. He finished showing me around and even showed me where the wedding would be in the coming days. Then we walked to where we would be getting ready for the wedding where he had multiple dresses hanging up on display.
“I know it’s a lot.” He began upon seeing the look on my face.
“Again, you didn’t have to do this.” I said.
“Well, I did and you’re going to look great in them. But I wanted you to try them on today and then let me fix up your hair and makeup to make sure you like it all.” He said.
“Dasar, this is your big day, it doesn’t matter what I look like.”
“I don’t care. My bestie came all this way to be a part of my wedding I am going to make sure she looks drop-dead gorgeous. Now come on let’s try on the first one!” He said excitedly.
“Fine, but why are there three dresses?” I asked.
“One for rehearsal dinner night, one for the ceremony, and one for the celebration of course.”
I just smiled and shook my head at his over-the-top antics. He helped me into the first one and it fit perfectly. It was a simple black dress, very similar to the nicer ones I wore back on Dathomir.
“What shoes?” I asked, looking over myself in the mirror and running a hand over my belly.
“I wasn’t sure honestly.” He said.
“I have black heels I can wear. How long will rehearsal dinner be?” I asked wanting to gauge if I’d be able to last that long in heels.
“Not too long. The rehearsal part itself shouldn’t be too long since the ceremony won’t be long. You can always take them off once we get to the dinner portion and we’re all sitting down.” He said.
“Okay, so that covers this one…”
I tried on the other two and we discussed shoe options for those as well. After that, I changed back into the sundress I had been wearing originally. Then he had me sit down at the vanity as he began to style my hair and do some light makeup. When he was done he let me see and I loved it.
“I think it looks perfect.” I said to him.
“Good. Shall we go get some lunch?” He asked.
“That sounds like a great idea.” I said before he helped me up and we walked back to the dining hall.
After lunch, we ended up relaxing in the lounge and discussing other details for the days to come. Soon, Totin was coming to get us to take us out on the water. We walked down to their private docking area. Before we got on, Totin turned to me and handed me a small device.
“Place this behind your ear, it’ll help you to not get seasick.” He said.
I nodded and attached it where he told me to. Dasar helped me carefully step onto the boat. The bottom was made of transparisteel allowing us to see the below us. It threw me for a slight loop but I quickly got used to it.
“I am going to take you over to the coral reef on the northern side of the island.” Totin said as he walked over to the controls.
“Sounds great!” “Come stand with me.” Dasar said, offering me his arm I took it knowing that when we began to move I would need someone or something to hold onto so I didn’t lose my balance.
“I’ll take it slow so it’s not too rough of a ride.” Totin vowed as the boat powered up.
True to his word, he did take it slower than I had expected to go, but I wasn’t mad about it in the slightest. When we got to the coral reef I felt like a kid on Life Day. I couldn’t stop smiling. There were so many beautiful fish bellow us. All the colors flashed around in the turquoise water around them.
“It’s beautiful.” I said smiling.
“It’s even better up close. Next time don’t get knocked up and we can dive down and see them better.” Dasar said, teasing me.
“I’ll definitely bring him out here when he’s older and show him.” I said turning to Dasar as I placed a hand on my stomach.
“I look forward to it.” He said with a smile.
We carefully cruised around the coral reef until the sun began to set. Then we began to head back. I had such a fun time. I only wish Maul could have been there too. Although I was still pissed off at him for not coming I had to admit I was missing him a whole lot.
“Oh Totin, why don’t we doc at the other side? Show her the hidden cove?” I heard Dasar ask.
Totin nodded but had a weird look on his face as if he were up to something. I shrugged it off and just continued to look around me at all the beautiful sites. I saw the doc as we began to approach it. This one was much smaller than the one we had left from. There was also someone standing on it. We were too far for me to see who it was, but it’s not like I knew very many people here. It could honestly be a droid. So instead of watching us approach the doc, I turned my attention to the cove.
“Alright, and that will conclude our coral reef tour.” Totin said dramatically as if he were a tour guide.
I laughed and went to turn around to thank him but stopped short. It hadn’t been a droid on the doc. It was Maul and he was holding a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

I wasn’t even sure how this happened. One night I fell asleep in my own bed, in a normal world. Then when I woke up the next morning I was in a world of aliens and space travel. There was a man here with horns and red skin that was adorned with tattoos. He told me I was on the planet Mandalore in his palace.
I was horrified. How did I get here? Why was I here? When could I go back? How do I go back? Could I even go back?
The man, Maul, as I came to know him, saw how scared I was and took care of me. He protected me. Made sure I was comfortable. He would answer any questions I had about this strange place. We became closer and closer. I began to trust him. Dare I even say I began to fall for him?
However, this didn’t keep me from being homesick. I missed my home terribly. I missed my normal old life. Sure this was fun, but it was clear I didn’t belong. So, one fateful day I asked him.
“When would I be able to go home?” I asked as we sat in the large dining hall, just the two of us, as we ate dinner one night.
He froze and lowered his fork back to his plate before slowly turning to me.
“Why would you ask such a thing? Don’t you like it here? I’ve done so much to make you comfortable. Why do you want to leave now?” He asked.
I stayed quiet. Although his voice was calm and even there was a daunting edge to it that made me feel uneasy.
“Wel- Well, maybe not home… maybe just somewhere else… get a change of- of sensory?”
“My stupid, stupid girl, why didn’t you say that?” He asked, his tone was much more endearing now, “Of course, we can. I would go anywhere with you… with you, darling, listen to that part with you. I don’t want you to go alone… I can’t understand why you would want to leave me alone here. So, please, stay, won’t you?” He asked giving me his best pleading eyes.
They worked. I nodded my head yes.
I was back home. Things were normal once again. I was sitting at home, rewatching my favorite movie when there was a knock on the door. I paused the movie and went to see who it was. When I opened the door my heart stopped. Maul stood before me.
Before I could ask any questions the image before me faded away and I was jolted awake. I was still in my bed on Mandalore.
“Are you okay, my dear? I could hear your whimpers through the walls.” Maul’s voice from the side of my bed startled me.
“It was just a dream…” I said.
“Nightmare? What was it about?” He asked as he took a seat on the edge of the bed.
I tried as hard as I could to recall the dream. Nothing was coming up. Not even the smallest of details came to mind.
“I- uh… I can’t remember…” I confessed.
“Oh well, it sounded like you were talking to someone…” Maul said.
Then it hit me. In the dream, I was talking to someone, it was my best friend from back home, I said their name.
“What were you talking about?”
I had to think again then I remembered.
“They said that they…” I paused realizing what I was about to say, “They said I shouldn’t have come back home… that I should’ve stayed gone… no one wanted me to come back…” The more I spoke the more the puzzle pieces fell into place, “my family was there too. They didn’t want me to be back either. They were happier without me.”
“Oh, my sweet girl, I am so sorry.”
I looked at him, “Will you please stay with me?” I asked suddenly very scared to be alone the rest of the night.
“Of course, I will.” He said, giving me a smile.
He laid down next to me and held me in his arms.
Just as I was drifting back off to sleep I heard him whisper, “You’re mine now, princess.”
When I woke up the next morning I was alone. I didn’t think much about it, I just went about getting up and getting ready for the day. Once I was dressed I went to leave to go meet Maul for breakfast but when I got to my door and went to open it, they were locked. I tried again… nothing.
“It’s no use. They won’t open.” I spun on my heel to see Maul standing over by my bed.
“Why?”
“Didn’t you hear me last night? You’re mine. You won’t be leaving this palace… or this room for the time being.” He said eerily calmly.
“You’re trapping me here? There’s no way out?” I asked as I began to panic.
“There is one way, my dear.”
“How?!” I demanded.
“You can hope and pray that one night you’ll fall asleep here and wake up safe and sound in your own world… but that’s very unlikely… so until then, you’ll stay with me.” He said smiling.
