    the thought had been weighing on him for much of the night- wen kexing was, after all, a beautiful man, and xiao xingchen found the more time spent together, the more fascinated he was... and the more he wanted to know. the warmth of wine caused a faint red to his cheeks, laughter bubbling up as though it could not and would not be contained. at some point, his hand ended on top of the other’s; a small, simple gesture, but the contact made him - tingle wasn’t quite the right word, but be it from a lack of knowledge or otherwise, xiao xingchen had no other way to describe it. 

   but as all good things must, so too did their dinner together come to an end. the young taoist debated- it was more of an inner argument, actually- as the two of them stood outside, cool breeze mistaken for the world’s encouragement. some part of him believes that he’s being silly, to even entertain such a- simple, albeit it intended romantic, notion was not among his studies, nor something he’d ever heard encouraged (but in the back of his mind, he thought of a disciple who came before, who left the celestial mountain--) 

     “thank you,” he bowed in gratitude, and straightening up, decided i’m going to do it- and allowed himself no further hesitation. xiao xingchen bit his lower lip only a moment before shifting to lean up and press his lips to wen kexing’s cheek. there was no pause after; his stomach did flips as he withdrew, bowed again, and hurried away. he couldn’t contain the nervous laughter that escaped, and partially scolded himself for not asking permission before doing such a thing. in its own right, that was exhilarating.

in a like manner as the pair of silver half-moons sweeping curiously in his direction, wen kexing silently scrutinised the stranger standing before him, his expressions riddled with a mixture of sheer interest and a sort of flippant lightheartedness that almost made him look suspicious in the eyes of any potential onlooker. while the man was paying his respects in a show of good etiquette, his own attention seemed to momentarily veer on the prior choice of words, which made him cock an eyebrow as though he found it strange no matter how many times he mulled over the words.

after a brief moment of ponderous silence though, wen kexing judged it rather inappropriate to not return at least an ounce of courtesy, and with his hands joined together in a half-fist, his left hand overlapping his right as he tilted his head forward just enough for the other to catch the light movement, he finally articulated a couple words with at least enough strength to his voice. “wen. wen kexing.”

evidently, the rows of corpses appeared to be the least of his worries. it was almost as if he had not seen them, and that the soil in bamboo ridge was nothing to him but mud with the occasional passing of ants that would perish under the crushing weight of his feet. he even went on with his thread of thoughts, disregarding the atmosphere surrounding them completely. “you must be a wandering cultivator. correct?” turning around, he nonchalantly pointed at the sign that indicated ‘those with souls, do not pass.’ with a barely perceptible curve upon his lips, and patiently explained. “rather than making this path safer, you’re exposing yourself to potential danger. i say, how about we leave this place? i’ll treat you to a drink to make up for the time you’ve just wasted, of course.”

wen kexing. xiao xingchen offered a polite smile in return- more accurately, it was supposed to be polite, but came off more friendly than that. this stranger held himself in a way that intrigued the young cultivator, who had not crossed paths with many in the world of mortals as of yet- there was something about the way he moved, something in how he didn’t seem to mind the muck and mess of corpses, even going so far as to turn and point at a sign with the slightest hint of a smile. 

“ah.” that... certainly made him feel foolish- he hadn’t noticed the sign prior to that moment-- and felt the need to laugh a little at himself for such a mistake. luckily, it wasn’t as though he’d damaged the living, the innocent-- “...i suppose i was over-eager,” the admission was gentle but sure, and another bow was offered to wen kexing, “thank you, wen-gongzi.” as he straightened, he tilted his head to one side, not unlike a curious creature trying to figure out just what it looked at. 

he refrained from inquiries, though they consumed his thoughts like a whirlwind. this man, too, had crossed the line where those with souls shouldn’t pass, and even pointed it out... it made xiao xingchen wonder, all the more curious. his smile returned, giving a light laugh. “i take it you know where we ought to go, then?” this question he permitted to pass his lips wasn’t as intrusive as any other that came to mind, and thus was allowed; it was agreement. the sheathed blade was shouldered once more, the strap across his chest. “lead the way.”
