Ref Recs for Whump Writers
Violence: A Writer’s Guide:  This is not about writing technique. It is an introduction to the world of violence. To the parts that people don’t understand. The parts that books and movies get wrong. Not just the mechanics, but how people who live in a violent world think and feel about what they do and what they see done.
Hurting Your Characters: HURTING YOUR CHARACTERS discusses the immediate effect of trauma on the body, its physiologic response, including the types of nerve fibers and the sensations they convey, and how injuries feel to the character. This book also presents a simplified overview of the expected recovery times for the injuries discussed in young, otherwise healthy individuals.
Body Trauma: A writer’s guide to wounds and injuries. Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Research what happens in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts to bring added realism to your stories and novels.
10 B.S. Medical Tropes that Need to Die TODAY…and What to Do Instead: Written by a paramedic and writer with a decade of experience, 10 BS Medical Tropes covers exactly that: clichéd and inaccurate tropes that not only ruin books, they have the potential to hurt real people in the real world.
Maim Your Characters: How Injuries Work in Fiction: Increase Realism. Raise the Stakes. Tell Better Stories. Maim Your Characters is the definitive guide to using wounds and injuries to their greatest effect in your story. Learn not only the six critical parts of an injury plot, but more importantly, how to make sure that the injury you’re inflicting matters.
Blood on the Page: This handy resource is a must-have guide for writers whose characters live on the edge of danger. If you like easy-to-follow tools, expert opinions from someone with firsthand knowledge, and you don’t mind a bit of fictional bodily harm, then you’ll love Samantha Keel’s invaluable handbook

Chapters: 1/? Fandom: Star Wars Legends: Republic Commando Series - Karen Traviss, Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order Series (Video Games), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Cal Kestis, BD-1 (Star Wars), Kal Skirata, Null-7 | Mereel Skirata, Null-10 | Jaing Skirata, Other Character Tags to Be Added Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Clone Wars characters will appear eventually, Pro-Jedi, Jedi Culture & Customs (Star Wars), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, nobody’s really having a good time at the start of this, this whole thing started as an excuse for Cal to meet Kal, or Kal to meet Cal if you prefer, what if I took Cal and made him smaller and more traumatized, I moved BD-1 to Zeffo because Cal deserves him, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Emotional/Psychological Abuse, Manipulation, it both sounds darker than it is and doesn’t, this stars a 12-year-old genocide survivor with psychic powers, and his name is not Aang, so he’s got some issues, one brief implication of pedophilia in the background, but nothing approaching that actually happens don’t worry, the mandalorian adoption instinct is going strong
  Summary:
AU.
Cal Kestis runs away from Bracca after Order 66 instead of sticking around- or at least he tries to. It doesn’t work very well. At all. It’s his own fault, really.
A year later, Kal Skirata and a few of his sons go to blow off some steam and find a battered Jett'ika instead. And they keep him, because of course they do.
In the short run this changes very little. In the long run? That remains to be seen, but they’re willing to find out. They do enjoy a good adventure, after all.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Me: “Haha wouldn’t it be funny if Cal Kestis and Kal Skirata met so people could joke about them having the same name?”
My brain: “Yeah that would be. What if you turned it into an entire fic instead of the fun little one-shot you were planning on?”
Me: “No I don’t think-”
My brain: “How about you get 10K words in before they even speak to each other?”
Me: “I’d really rather-”
My brain: “Also make it angsty.”
Me: “I give up.”
I have to credit @winterinhimring for part of this, because I enjoyed Cin Vhetin so much that my brain apparently decided to riff it with the other sad ginger psychic, and I would be remiss not to. It’s growing legs of its own but the influence is definitely there.

Writing a Star Wars au where obi wan is maces padawan but obi wan and qui gon are still close and they annoy the order by being like cats who consistently bring mice to your door.
Amazing, I love it, them still being inexplicably close cause the Force Decrees it and Mace is like ...padawan pls, have some standards.
Them as cats bapbapbap-ing each other in the hallways and dragging trouble to Mace's doorstep.
I also interpreted it as like they take turns being the cat and mouse and it's like oh look Qui-Gon's kidnapped the ginger padawan again and he returns Obi-Wan to Mace covered in mud. 4ft teenybopper Obi-Wan dragging 7ft passed out Qui-Gon to Yoda/Dooku’s doorstep like "I have been successful in my hunt! Praise me! :3 also Master Jinn got suuper poisoned by a plant he ate while we were out so good luck bye 👋"

Okay but imagine
Palpatine: Have you heard of the tragedy of Darth Plegieus the Wise?~
Anakin, whose just come from having a sibling spat with Obi-wan and hasn't slept in a while: ~Have you heard of the tragedy of your mom?~
Palpatine: ...
Anakin: ...
Anakin, scrambling up and out of the seating box: I gotta go
Thus the galaxy was saved because Anakin was too embarrassed to go back and see Palpatine. He did however admit to the conversation to Obi-wan who told the council.

Love this idea!!! 😍💖
I'm thinking about Force Sensitive Fives again.
Domino Squad still bickers a lot, but they're very quick to close ranks around Fives when people start looking too hard at him.
The Domino's are still seen as weird and poor soldiers, but a large part of that is because Fives doesn't know what he's doing and shares his feelings with his batchmates.
Somehow, they manage to hide this from Shaak. Later, she would marvel that these untrained men managed to hide Fives force sensitivity from her.
All five Dominoes survive Rishi.
All five Dominoes also survive the attack on Kamino.
Though only Hevy, Fives, and Echo end up in ARC training. (It doesn't matter, in the end, because A force bond between the five Dominoes means that all of them are ARC trained)
Fives gets snatched up by the 104th, Plo Koon taking Fives as his padawan. And upon realizing that there's a force bond between the five Dominoes, he also takes the other four Dominoes as well.
Talking to Domino Squad can be very frustrating. It's been known to happen that Echo will start a conversation with someone, and then Cutup will pick up the conversation thread.
Listening to the dominoes talking to each other is worse, though. They jump from topic to topic, and sometimes have whole conversations silently. No one can keep up with their conversations, though Commander Wolffe can understand them better than most.

let's face it, Obi-Wan is only a stickler for the rules in comparison to Anakin. this guy thought lightsaber nunchucks were cool as a teenager and jumping out of politicians windows was cool as an adult. he regularly sasses the chancellor of the republic. he saw Anakin and Padmé being super obvious and decided it was none of his business. he sits pussy facing the world in important meetings. hes's a lonely single in your area. he won one (1) fight against a sith lord and decided they were his speciality despite getting his ass handed to him by Dooku multiple times. he's annoying on purpose as a battle strategy. every man he meets desires him carnally and he doesn't notice. he puts one foot on Han Solos ship and is like "damn bitch you live like this" despite having spent 20 years in a desert hole. he gets himself killed to one-up Vader one last time. he's winning the idgaf war

Random person: how many times have you read this?
Me: Yes.
APLAP (Assigned Pathetic Lifeform at Padawanship)
New padawan Obi-Wan trying to figure out how the FUCK to make his master listen and not abandon him to go running off following "the will of the force" when it hits him. Qui-Gon is perfectly happy stopping and taking care of pathetic life forms, but not Obi-Wan. That's it. He's always been prepared, always been dutiful, strong, self-sufficient.
He's cracked the code. He needs to be more pathetic.
The next time he senses Qui-Gon's about to run off he coordinates a scene of utmost pathetic-ness, that is, he throws himself into the nearest fountain. He trudges up to his master sopping wet, water-logged robes swallowing him, with hair sticking to his face and containing bits of algae from the fountain. He mumbles out an apology for being clumsy before looking up at Qui-Gon with the biggest, most woeful eyes possible to ask if he happened to bring any spare robes (he didn't, Obi-Wan knows this because he is usually the one to pack spare robes for them both). His wet hair is dripping water into his eyes that's beginning to turn them an irritated red, and there's algae sliding down the side of his face, it really is masterful work.
"Oh...I'm sure I'll be able to find something by myself, it's okay Master, I know you had important work to do."
Qui-Gon visibly hesitates. Obi-Wan starts shivering. He turns to walk away. He's stopped by his Master's hand on his shoulder. His Master, who walks back with him, who gets clean clothes from their hosts, who has folded like wet flimsi and even explains his stupid, stupid plan before choosing to hotwire a hoverbike with a passenger seat! Oh, Obi-Wan really has cracked the code!
Afterwards, Obi-Wan stages an increasingly pitiful accident for himself every time his patented 'Qui-Gon Jinn Bullshit' detector goes off. Eventually, his Master stops leaving him behind at all, even giving him funny looks when he turns around and Obi-Wan isn’t next to him. It never fails to make Obi-Wan grin and run to catch up. Sure, his reputation as a perfect padawan is in tatters, alongside his dignity, but it’s a small price to pay for a place at his Master’s side, for him to remember there’s a place for Obi-Wan there.
When the ray shields come up on Naboo, Qui-Gon doesn't charge ahead and leave his padawan behind, he hasn't for years. He waits for Obi-Wan because it feels wrong to do otherwise, his padawan belongs at his side.
Much, much later, when Obi-Wan is drinking to the end of the war with friends, Commander Cress will ask him how he kept General Jinn from running off for entire decade. Obi-Wan laughs, informs him, and resolutely ignores the scene Quinlan is making as the man cackles and pulls up a book to shove at them both, titled Classical Conditioning 101: A guide to subtle psychological manipulation.
