Cats, both domestic and wild, play an important role in yokai folklore. The Nekomata is the third yokai that answers today's promp of #folktaleweek challenge- awakening. The Nekomata is the late form of the ordinary cat. It is said that when a cat reaches a certain age, its tail splits and it begins to behave dangerously and suspiciously. The older and more abused a cat is before the transformation, the more powerful the Nekomata will be. To gain revenge against those who wronged it, the spirit may haunt humans. It is famous for the power of raising the dead. He control them with ritualistic dances, gesturing with paw and tail. Due to these beliefs, sometimes kittens' tails were cut off based on the assumption that if the tails could not fork, the cats could not become Nekomata. Nekomata are often described as unusually large cats living in mountains and forests, but also seen in cities and towns

The name Yatagarasu is generally understood to mean 'eight-span crow’. One “span” is not the American nor European measurement, it was the length between the outstretched thumb and middle finger, so a very large crow indeed. A divine creature in Japanese folklore, but also referred to the Chinese three-legged crow, sometimes red, a symbol of the Sun. According to Chinese myth, there were ten crows, perched on a red mulberry-tree. Each day one of the sun crows was traveling around the world, to bring daylight to the world, one after another, on a carriage, driven by the 'mother' of the suns. The sun crows loved eating grasses of immortality, so they often feast on these grasses, but the mother of the sun did not like this. She covered their eyes to prevent them from doing so. It is also told that one day all ten sun crows descend from heaven on the same day, causing the world to burn. The celestial archer saved the day by shooting down all but one of them.* (*from Handbook of Chinese mythology, Lihui Yang; Deming An; J.A.Turner)

Inugami (dog-god) The Dog Yokai The malevolent dog spirit is one of the most tragic, yet dangerous Yokai. Inugami is created through rituals, called kojutsu, which have been luckily banned in Japan since the Heian era, and because of it’s cruelty I won’t dare to explain how it goes. By cruel sacrification, domestic dog will became dangerous and violent Yokai, similar in his behavior to Kitsune, fox yokai, so it can"possess" humans in exactly the same manner. The Inugami can easly posses people who are emotionally unstable. His power is used in order to attack enemies of his owner. The possessed will feel pain in the chest, hands and feet, will bark and behave like a dog. They can have accidents or become mentally deranged. The possession by the malevolent dog spirit is a terrible and terrifying phenomenon, either to witness or to experience
