the thing about iroh is that all of his biggest mistakes are caused by his fatal character flaw and that flaw is curiosity. 

by any general standards, iroh ought to be the smartest man in any room and usually HE IS, but then he’ll be irresistibly tempted to poison himself just because he thinks a wild plant might make pretty good tea.  or he’ll nonchalantly follow zuko into the dai li’s heavily guarded secret underground lair just to see what kind of mischief his troublesome nephew is getting up to. or he’ll accept the earth king’s invitation to serve tea at the palace EVEN THOUGH HE’S A WANTED FUGITIVE and therefore the palace is absolutely the last place he should go a-visiting, and the only reason i can see for him to do so is because after a failed 600 day siege, iroh was probably dying of curiosity to know what the inside of the earth king’s palace would be like… it’s the closest he’s ever gotten to infiltrating ba sing se and he simply could not resist strolling through the front door as an honored guest. he ABSOLUTELY should have known better but he just COULD NOT RESIST.

for a man who constantly nags at zuko for never thinking things through….iroh certainly lets his curiosity get the better of him a few too many times.
