Isla's birthday is in a few weeks and I feel terrible because I haven't really planned anything for it yet. But I have no idea what I'll be up for after my surgery so I can't really plan for a party or anything else yet. I'm trying to figure out what we can do for her that's lowkey but will still feel really special. I also don't have any great gift ideas- I know we're going to get her a bigger inflatable pool for the backyard and a jewelry/music box but that's all I got so far.
It doesn't help that the weekend before her birthday is Mother's Day & a couple days later is my husband's birthday- I'm even less prepared for those. My mom mentioned she wants one of those Dyson blow dryers so I think my sister & I are just going to get her that. No clue what my husband wants, he has a 3D printer on his Amazon wishlist but what's he going to do with that?

I’m now super stressed about having to stay in the hospital two nights. I didn’t think we’d need anyone to help us out the actual day of my surgery so I didn’t ask (I asked my mom to come the following Monday/Tuesday instead because Jimmy would be back at work) but now it’s looking like we’ll need someone to stay with Isla after school on Thursday because the hospital isn’t allowing any visitors under 18. Luckily my dad said he could come even though I’ve given him very little advance notice. This weekend I just need to get my life so that the house is clean, organized, etc. before hand.
I’ve only stayed in the hospital one other time, when Isla was born. And that was obviously different- Jimmy was there the entire time, my family was there most of the time during the day and we were taking care of a newborn. Assuming this is similar to my c section I would have been bored as hell the day after had I been there by myself without a baby to take care of. Jimmy can visit during the day while Isla is at school on Friday but still, it’ll be boring just sitting around the hospital room I’m sure. Maybe I’ll just be super tired and I’ll sleep all day. Or maybe I can convince them to let me go on Friday. I’ll gladly be bedridden in the comfort of my own home but hospitals suck.

I’m at the hospital for my pre-op/blood draws. Some overly talkative man just asked me when my baby was due- not pregnant dude but thanks. Then to make up for it I guess he told me a cheesy joke he heard on gospel radio. Some other lady keeps making little observations about how busy it is to nobody in particular. People are coughing. None of the old people know how to use the registration computer and just having to listen to the staff try to explain it to them is stressing me out.
Also apparently my procedure isn’t really outpatient like they keep saying and I’ll probably be in the hospital for 2 nights. So I’m over today.

My sister sent me this photo of us from 2010 in Italy (I’m on the right). And I know weight/body type isn’t everything and I’m not super unhappy with my current body but at the same time I would l kind of kill to get back to/closer to this (I’m probably 30 lbs heavier now). I know the health piece is most important but I’m also definitely not eating the best or exercising enough at the moment. So I need to work on that and honestly losing weight is a better motivator for me than an abstract goal of just being healthier. I’m not dumb, I’ll probably never be at this weight again and that’s fine. But if I could find some motivation to get more fit and drop some weight and tone up? That’d be cool. Obviously I’m not going to be doing much in the way of exercise for a while after my surgery but I can work on my eating habits at least during that time. And we’re looking at getting a heavy bag which I think would be a fun way to exercise for me once I’m recovered. I’m the worst at making exercise a habit but I really need to work on that and maybe this photo will be good motivation foe that.

I think my best parenting advice or parenting recommendation at this point would be to buy a lot of board games for your kid & play them regularly. I’m not gonna lie- I don’t find playing Barbie dolls or baby dolls with Isla to be the most stimulating activity. But playing a board game with her? Usually pretty fun, probably educational and kills a good bit of time. We own a bunch because they’re relatively cheap ($5-$20) and more games = not getting stuck playing the same ones over and over.
I think the best ones we own are Zingo (“bingo with a zing” is cheesy but that’s basically accurate), Disney Eye Found It (we have the card & board game version- both are fun, card game is really quick & easy to pick up & play), Disney Princess Cupcake Party (kind of like the Cootie Bug game but cuter) and Race to the Treasure (cooperative). She also just got Sleeping Queens in her Easter basket which lots of people recommended & she likes a lot (I think it says 7+ but all the articles said younger kids like it- I was skeptical but she picked up on it quick).
Anyways this has been my board game PSA.

It’s really extra to buy books way beyond Isla’s current reading level just because I’m so excited for her to eventually read them, right? There are just so many books I read as a kid that I’m excited for her to hopefully eventually read (if she’s interested). I wish I still had some of my books from growing up but we didn’t save most of them. I especially wish I had saved the copy of Esperanza Rising that my grandma bought me because that’s one of my favorite books.
Anyways, I guess for now I’ll settle for just making lists of books to keep in mind as she gets older. We’ve still been going strong with reading the beginner chapter books out loud. I think the only series so far I haven’t liked was Junior B. Jones (I never read those as a kid so the obnoxiousness caught me off guard) but Isla has liked everything. I just wish our library had a better selection because we’re quickly running out of room for books (but I hate the idea of getting rid of any once we own them- especially because eventually she’ll be able to reread these on her own).

Shout out to the people who have the energy/time/patience to individually list small items on FB Marketplace. Is it really worth the effort to sell a volleyball for $7 if it means exchanging 500 messages with strangers asking if it’s available and trying to arrange a pickup? Also who is actually going out of their way to people’s houses to buy some of this smaller stuff? Usually the discount isn’t much better than what you’d find going to TJ Maxx or waiting for a sale.

I’m off work today and have a bunch of little things to get done. I’m pretty impressed with myself- it’s not even 10 am yet and I spent a good portion of the morning on the phone with my sister but still managed to make two phone calls I’ve been putting off. I scheduled my hospital pre-op appointment and got my credit limit increased finally. I had a $1k limit starter card in college and never bothered to request an increase- I really only use it for a couple bills to earn points but now I can pay those without hitting 80% credit usage.
Jimmy gets his 2nd vaccine today. He’s going to try to go a little early so we can go down to the river walk afterwards and walk the trails/have a picnic. In the mean time I need to return a couple things to Target & clean my house.

We’re only just getting on the road which means we won’t be home until 7 pm 😩. Jimmy is off work tomorrow & Isla is staying home but I have to work.
In other news there’s a baby(ish) alligator living in the retention pond near my mom’s house. It’s very small (maybe 3 feet max) but eventually it will grow 😬.

Usually when we stay with my mom for a weekend I feel like we waste a ton of time because it takes an act of god to get everyone up and out of the house and everything coordinated. But this weekend has actually been productive!
I had a hair appointment yesterday morning (I still use the same salon I’ve been using since high school, I just plan my appointments around when I’ll be in town). Jimmy & Isla dropped me off and went to a little coffee & cars show to look at the cars while they waited on me. Only mistake I made was letting the stylist sell me some product- apparently “mid range” cost doesn’t mean what I expected and I ended up spending $60 on two very small bottles of shampoo & conditioner- luckily I had a gift card so I “only” paid $30 out of pocket for everything. We went to Lush afterwards & then took Isla to a nearby toy store before we went to my sister’s for an Easter egg hunt.
Our 7 year wedding anniversary is today so my mom babysat last night & we went to a really good restaurant for dinner/drinks (best scallops I’ve ever had). We didn’t want to immediately go back to my mom’s so instead we drove to the beach and took a little walk but it was super cold and dark and I had to pee and all the public bathrooms were closed so we went to Target. Did a leisurely kid free browse and then brought some hard seltzer back to my mom’s and went out on the boardwalk by her house to sit and drink it for a while.
Isla was really impressed with her Easter basket this morning- nothing over the top, some small toys, books & candy. Now we’re getting ready for brunch with my sister’s family & my pap. I think afterwards we’re taking him by my grandma’s grave to leave flowers & then we’ll head home sometime this afternoon.

We’re going to my mom’s this weekend for Easter and we have to take a 20 ft ladder we borrowed from my sister back to her. When we borrowed it we were able to take back roads home but she’s since moved and now we have to drive on the interstate which is anxiety inducing. So now I get to sit in the car worried for 2.5 hours that the ladder is going to go flying off.

It’s really annoying having to nag my husband to mow the grass when a) he’s the one who insisted on us having a large yard and b) he’s the one who insisted on buying a janky used push mower from a friend.

Just instituted quiet dinner for tonight because tbh I just need my child to stop talking for 5 minutes + she gets so distracted (by everything including talking) that it takes her 45 minutes to eat dinner.

I attempted to grill some bbq pineapple/bacon/chicken skewers tonight for dinner. Burned my hand in not one but two places. The chicken got all stuck to the grill grates. Then when I tried to grill the 2nd batch we ran out of propane. I mean the skewers that cooked through were good but yeah. Not grilling again anytime soon.

I finally watched This Much I Know Is True- it was so good. Definitely not a feel good series, kind of the total opposite at times but the acting was great and I liked the story/theme. HBO rarely disappoints.
Jimmy & I are still rewatching Portlandia & Reno 911 together. I’ve been watching Frasier for the 20th time as background tv (that show 100% still holds up). I occasionally catch up on SVU even though it’s boring as hell lately (I only watch for Mariska) and Jimmy & I watch Good Girls together. I need to find some new current shows to watch because a lot of what I watch has ended/is ending soon (Insecure, Claws, Superstore, Better Call Saul). I’m resisting the urge to just rewatch stuff (kind of want to rewatch Oz or Big Love? And Parenthood) and watch something new instead. But old tv is so comforting and I don’t have to pay 100% attention to understand what’s going on.

We basically spent the whole day out of the house and spent too much money today. We went to the farmers market and got a few things (I always feel bad like I’m hurting people’s feelings by not buying their homemade goods and end up spending more at things like this than I intended to). Then we came home for lunch and left to go to Augusta. We stopped at a couple places before going to the mall. We ended up buying a few things for Isla but it was very crowded and despite all the signs mandating masks a lot of people weren’t wearing them. Then we wanted to pick up dinner but it was a little too early so we stopped by Walmart in the next town over to get a few things. And like I really think I’m going to start driving the extra 20 minutes any time we need to go to Walmart because our Walmart is trashy and chaotic but this one was clean and quiet and while no Walmart shopping experience is truly “nice” it was at least not terrible. We picked up dinner at this place that’s on a small lake where they had a mini petting zoo which is where Isla encountered the goat. The food wasn’t amazing (could have been partially due to it getting a little soggy/cold on the drive home) but Jimmy ordered frog legs and I tried those for the first time (they were ok- like a cross between chicken & fish). Now I just need a long nap to recover from the day.

I figured Easter is a good excuse to find time to finally use the Cricut I got for Christmas. Paid $2 for this SVG on Etsy & it turned out pretty cute. If Isla’s class is doing anything for Easter I might make a bunch and fill them with candy for her to take to school. Otherwise I’ll just make a few for her Easter basket & the Easter egg hunt we’re going to do.
