No one is ever ready to die. Yet, death is the one thing that is coming for us all. It could happen while you’re sleeping, shopping for the perfect dress, or stuck in an elevator. “Not My Time to Die” is a new 10-minute play by Aaron D. Wallis.
The play tells the story of one man’s final moments on this plane of existence as he’s stuck with Death in a tight, enclosed space.

Excerpt from Chapter 7 of Tomorrow’s a New Day
“Did you ever stop and think that maybe you’re poison, Drake?” Abigail asks.
“Have you not seen the light already?” Drake turns to face her.
“Of course, I have. I just ignore it so I can taunt you instead. It’s more fun this way.”
“Doesn’t peace sound like the better option?”
“It sounds boring if I’m honest. I know if I moved on, well, you would just miss me too much. Anyway, I will move on when I know you have suffered just as much as I have.”
“You know, since the day you were murdered, I have suffered. And now, with the loss of Sawyer, I will continue to do nothing but suffer.”
“But you haven’t suffered enough for being the cause of my death.”
Throwing his hands in the air, “I get it, I’m the reason you’re dead!” Drake yells.
“Drake!” Ginny calls as she walks up toward him.
Drake turns and is shocked to see Ginny standing behind him.
“What are you doing here, Ginny?”
“I’ve been looking all over town for you. The station said I might find you here.”
Abigail leans over to Drake and starts to whisper in his ear.
“Oops,” Abigail runs her ghostly finger over his lips, “I wonder how much she’s heard. See, I can’t cross over when it’s about to get interesting,” she laughs.
“Shut up, shut up, shut up!” Drake shouts as he tries to fan her away.
“I’m sorry?!” Ginny asks with a confused expression on her face.
“I wasn’t talking to you,” Drake replies.
“Then, who are you talking to?” Ginny sounds even more confused.
“I’m not…why did you want to see me?” Drake asks, changing the subject.
“What about Sawyer?”
Beautiful time of the year!
Excerpt from Chapter 6 of Tomorrow’s a New Day
Out of breath, Harley blurts, "It's nice to know I'm the one doing all the hard work."
"First off, I'm doing my part," Elena smiles at Harley. "And second, there's always time for a break when it comes to a nice steamy cup of joe," Elena pours something from a flask into her cup. "Anyway, what did I tell you to do if you saw me in public?"
"Not to make contact, we don't want anyone being able to connect the two of us together," Harley repeats the phrase as if she has repeated it many, many times to Elena.
"And what are you doing?" Elena asks.
"Making contact," Harley snarls at Elena.
"From this moment on, if you see me in public, don't come up to me."
"I thought you would like to hear the interesting news that I have just come across."
"And what's that?" Elena asks as she perks up.
"An old friend has returned to Old Cove."
Elena shrugs her shoulders.
Harley repeats, "An old friend."
Sitting up straighter, "No, that's impossible. She can't be here."
Excerpt from Chapter 5 of Tomorrow’s a New Day
Drake is at Memorial Hospital, waiting for Sawyer to wake up. He places his hand on Sawyer's.
"Sawyer, I need you to wake up. I know we have only known each other a short time, but in that short time, I've fallen for you."
Ginny is standing outside Sawyer's room, listening to Drake confess his feelings to Sawyer. Drake looks up and notices Ginny standing at the door.
"Ginny, what are you doing here?" Drake asks.
"I wanted to come and check on Sawyer. I heard the call come over the radio. I rushed over as soon as I heard," says Ginny.
"The doctors keep asking me all these questions about family history and I can't get ahold of any of them."
Ginny freezes, not sure how to respond.
"I'll keep him in my prayers," Ginny responds quickly.
"Thank you! It's really weird, one minute we're talking and the next he's out cold."
"And they have no idea what's wrong?"
"Not a clue! They keep running tests. I guess now it's just a waiting game."
Ginny walks over to the front of Sawyer's bed and places her hand on Sawyer's hand.
"I can tell this one is a strong person."
At that moment, they both hear a beeping sound as Sawyer starts to flat line. Maybe you aren't as strong as she thinks. Drake rushes over to Sawyer's side, pushing Ginny out of the way.
"Nurse, come quick. Sawyer, don't you dare die on me!" Drake yells.

Excerpt from Chapter 4 of Tomorrow’s a New Day
Sawyer makes his way into the kitchen, where Harley, our maid who has been a servant of our family for around five years, is performing today's morning duties while waiting to serve the family breakfast.
"Good morning, Har," Sawyer says as he yawns.
"Good morning to you. How are you doing, darlin'?" Harley asks.
"Besides everything that's happened, I kept having awful dreams all night."
"Should I call the doctor and have your prescription refilled?"
"No, I'll be fine. I'm sure it's just from everything that's happened last night," Sawyer lays his head on the table. "Could I have a cup of coffee, please?"
Harley fixes Sawyer a cup of coffee. While Harley notices Sawyer isn't paying attention, Harley pulls out a small envelope from her pocket and pours a white substance into his cup, and starts mixing. Harley then carries the cup to Sawyer with a smile on her face.
"Here you are. Is there anything else I could do for you?" Harley asks.
"Our family doesn't deserve you." Sawyer smiles as he starts sipping his coffee.
"You're family Sawyer. And I treat you like I would any of my other family members." Harley pats Sawyer on the back.

Excerpt from Chapter 3 of Tomorrow’s a New Day
Across town at the Old Cove Inn, a woman walks inside and up to the front desk. She resembles Abigail, Drake's dead wife.
No one is at the front desk, so the woman starts to hit the front desk bell.
Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.
"Hello!" She yells. "Is anyone here?"
She continues to hit the bell. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.
The night manager walks up to the front desk. "Will you please stop that awful, awful noise? You're going to wake the dead, I mean guests."
"I need a room," She demands.
"Well, you're in luck. We only have one room left."
"I'll take it," she hands him her credit card and I.D.
"So, are you just passing through?" He asks as he fills out the paperwork.
"I'm actually here to see my brother-in-law," she grins. "We have some unfinished business to take care of."
The man hands back the woman's credit card and I.D., "Lovely. I hope you enjoy your stay with us, Ms. Rivera," he says as he hands her a room key.
"Call me, Janelle," she smiles wickedly.
Excerpt from Chapter 2 of Tomorrow’s a New Day
Lily has just entered her apartment when she notices a figure sitting on her couch.
"What the hell, Elena? How did you get in here?!" Lily shouts.
"It's nice to see you too, dear." Elena gracefully replies as she finishes reapplying her ruby red lipstick.
Elena Wollstonecraft was once part of one of the wealthiest families in Old Cove, but like most of my enemies, the Wollstonecrafts got in over their heads trying to overpower me. Now, she lives for the glory days of having power.
"I was passing through; I thought I'd check in on you." Elena smiles.
"Look, I did it," Lily says holding out her hand to show off her engagement ring. "When the light catches it just right, it sparkles." Elena's face shows no emotions, she gets up off the couch and moves over to Lily, grabs her hand, and gets a closer look at the ring.
"I suppose congratulations are in order," Elena releases her hand.
"Now, don't overdo yourself with excitement."
"Have you set a date?"
"We just got engaged. You're getting a little ahead of yourself."
Moving over to a mirror on the wall, she puckers up her lips emulating a kiss, "I would get married as soon as possible. You don't want to lose Lawrence! You haven't forgotten what we talked about."
"No, I haven't," Lily says, gushing over her ring.
"I'll come over tomorrow and we can start planning. The sooner you get married, the better. We are losing a lot of time!"
"I actually wanted to talk about "the plan."
Lily's phone rings before she can finish. She answers as Elena is still looking at herself in the mirror.

"Lawrence." Kellen blurts out as he tries to catch his breath.
Lawrence looks at Kellen suspiciously, then looks at Sawyer, who has a frightened look on his face.
"What's going on here?" Lawrence asks them. He places the phone back on the receiver.
"Father's been shot," Kellen replies.
A simple answer for a simple mind.
"I see that! I mean which one of you did it!" Lawrence countered.
Kellen and Sawyer's faces both turn pale white – does Lawrence have the right suspects? I have always enjoyed watching my children squirm.
"And why would we kill father?" Sawyer asked defensively.
"Ha! Don't make me go through the list, because I will. Spill it: which one of you finally got the strength you needed to shoot him dead." Lawrence asks playfully.
"You really want to know? Fine, I'll tell you," Kellen said forcefully.
"Kellen, what are you talking about?" Sawyer eyes him.
"He wants to know – so I'm going to tell him," he says, silencing himself for dramatic effect.

Besides being a photographer, videographer, and designer, I'm also a writer. I've been a fan of soap operas since I was five years old. It's always been a dream to create a soap world of my own. In 2010, I did just that by writing a radio soap opera called "Tomorrow's a New Day" for my college radio station. Fast forward to 2021; I've decided to rework it as a written soap opera. I hope you enjoy meeting the Abernathy family and following the schemes and adventures of Old Cove residents.
