online buddy of mine (born in 2004) said “i strongly suspect the vast majority of ‘I'll always remember where I was on 9/11’ stories are not true. I simply don't believe that 75% of people were watching the news live at 8:45 in the morning on a Tuesday when the strangest thing happened.” and like. okay. we can talk about the aftermath in the 22 years since 9/11 and the horrific and evil jingoism that ruined countless lives in decades-long wars all we want. but i cannot overstate enough that 1) we still very much had a monoculture in 2001. most americans would watch either the today show or GMA. 2) as soon as that first plane hit every news station in the country was covering it. schools and businesses and break rooms turned on every tv. every radio. anything that had the ability to broadcast the news. (smartphones weren’t a thing. cell phones and the internet existed but they were new and fragile. unreliable. your best bet was still to sit there and watch. or listen.) and we all sat there and watched the second plane hit and the pentagon hit and the towers collapse and flight 93. so, yes: basically everyone who was alive and old enough to form lasting memories in 2001 remembers that day and the coverage. even people who weren’t near a tv or radio in real time remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. they probably even remember the reason why they didn’t hear about it in real time. i was 5 years old in my first week of first grade and i remember it. it was like. the biggest thing to happen in this country since fucking. pearl harbor. bigger. there’s no need to downplay that.

The older you get the more you will realize that your friends are people who have made mistakes and bad decisions and even just fucked up and hurt people.
And obviously your boundaries with your friends are completely up to you but you do need to recognize that if you cut off everyone who has done something wrong, you’re going to end up with no friends (and you yourself will have also fucked up in your life, and not lived up to those impossible standards either).
I’ve found it’s much more constructive to learn how to say “hey dude, that was massively fucked up of you,” because most people are really willing to say “yeah, it was, I need to work on it/not do it again/apologize and make things right” ESPECIALLY if they are hearing it from you as their friend.

I love it when people take fic writing seriously. I love when it's not 'Here's this dumb thing I wrote' and instead it's 'Here's this thing I put blood, sweat and tears into. Here's this thing I slaved away at, trying new writing techniques and editing over and over. Here's this dialogue that kept me awake at night. Here's this beautiful turn of phrase I thought up. Here's this thing that I wrote with vulnerability and heart, and I am proud to share it with you.'

YES professional captioning services SHOULD be ashamed of the shoddy work that they put out!!
as someone who both uses captions for adhd reasons and also used to write captions for money... i think the two big issues are 1) captioning companies pay absolute garbage so their workers don't give a shit about the quality of their captions, they just want to do as much work as possible to earn enough money, and 2) everyone is migrating to auto-generated captions and there's no good quality control.
writing captions is actually very fun and fulfilling under the right circumstances, but it's turned into an absolute nightmare and no one seems to:
take any pride in their work
verify grammar and spelling (especially names and places)
make sure that if they're working off a script, that it's the same as what the actors are actually saying, and if not, fucking change it
double check that their syncing is correct (honestly, if your captions aren't synced correctly they are absolutely useless, what the actual fuck)
oh, and screw any company whose policy it is to censor explicit dialogue in the captions, that is absolutely awful practice and they should be ashamed.
as annoyed as i get as a hearing person reading terrible captions, i can't imagine what it's like for people who have to depend on them in order to consume media. captioning should not be a sub-minimum-wage job with minimal oversight. it's an accessibility issue.
put some fucking money in it.
pay for quality captions.
respect your viewers.
I, a hearing person who likes subtitles just as a preference, shouldn't have to read a subtitle that's obvious nonsense, go back a couple seconds, and listen again in order to figure out what's going on. An accessibility feature should not be the most half-assed part of a professionally made production. Scripted media has absolutely no excuse for not having subtitles or having subtitles that aren't perfectly verbatim. Professional captioning services should be ashamed of the shoddy work that they put out. Captions should be treated as a part of the production, just like filming, editing, audio balancing, etc - and anything that releases with missing or bad captions should be seen as unfinished

my therapist: you do understand that you are disabled even if the social security administration doesn't end up granting you SSDI, right?

my therapist: you do understand that the government doesn't get to determine whether or not you're actually disabled, right?

my therapist: all of your doctors confirm your disability. and so do I. you are disabled. right now. and you deserve accommodations and compassion and help. you're not just "failing at life". you didn't "do this to yourself". you're not "making it all up". you know that, right?

god i'm so tired of everybody's bad faith interpretations of everything. where's the trust. where's the forgiveness. where's the understanding that most things are complex and most people have many layers. and like the black eyed peas once said. where is the love

I was supposed to have a doctor's appointment this morning but it had to be rescheduled last minute and now it's in October. I didn't have any pressing concerns so it's not a huge deal but the unexpected change in my schedule has thrown me for a loop and I'm struggling. I know there's no reason to be upset but it still feels a bit like the end of the world and the fact that my feelings are completely illogical makes it even worse. WHY AM I LIKE THIS

thank you for visiting my home!
i've had this blog for several years, so it's about time to pin a post, i guess.
i mostly reblog fandom stuff (lately a lot of ted lasso and derry girls, sometimes buffy, sometimes other shows) and fanfic/writing stuff.
expect occasional posts from me complaining about random shit, usually tagged as #maya overshares so you can block if you want.

I think the only way I'm gonna get to go see Barbie in the theater (because it's been like 5 years since I've been to a movie theater and I don't want to go alone) is going to be to get my husband a ticket for Oppenheimer at the same time and then we go together and part ways at the last minute. I really have nothing against this plan as long as I get a big-ass Coke to keep me company. It's 110 degrees out and movie theaters have great air conditioning.

Being on this website is fun because you can absolutely tell when a blorbo clicks in someone's brain. You're scrolling, and suddenly out of nowhere there's like 12 posts about the same character back to back reposted by the same person, and you just know "oh. They're a permanent part of their psyche now." and honestly it's a vibe go off king

write bad fanfic. write mediocre fanfic. write fanfic that a thousand people before you have already written. write niche fanfic. write fanfic that only a few people will read or understand. write fanfic just for you. write fanfic just for a friend. write ocs. write self-inserts. the fact that you’re taking the time and energy to put your ideas into the world is amazing and people who shame you for it need to find better ways to spend their time.
